I was think is it possible to just take the road data from g-maps and use it to make the roads in Outerra?

You can't, these datasets are closed source.
Outerra will use OpenStreetMaps data (already the case with rivers), the road support is still in development, there are a few pictures and videos here and there :)

Though really, if you've looked at your area any time recently, there's a good chance that it hasn't really been updated at all.  Hell there's still the old 2D (or elevation 3D only) nearby me.  I was also surprised that the first visits in one of their "Voyager" guides, the pyramids, is still only 2D....
