Large Futuristic City Video
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:47:08 pm »

I decided to see how giant models looked in Outerra so I decided to make a bunch and make a video. I think they turned out fairly well. They have baked on AO and that's it. Texture sizes are 2048x2048 and the huge one has 4096x4096. I know they are huge but my video card is 3GB so I thought why not.

Let me know what you think!

That is really cool.

A rough estimate is about ~150,000 polygons between all 8 of the building models depicted in that scene. I placed each one more than once but I think Outerra does some instancing so performance shouldn't change that much. I might continue to make more of these. We'll see.

How does the lighting look so good on the models? I swear that was the craziest and most awesome shading I have ever seen. It has to be baked on shadow otherwise you have ambient occlusion on and that isn't even coded yet!

I baked ambient occlusion on in 3DS Max, it looks so good because it's a 2048x2048 map with high samples and settings across the board. It took a while to render out on all of them, but I'm happy with the results. The advantage is that the lighting looks good and doesn't need to be computed in real time. The disadvantage is that it takes up a lot to texture memory to be able to look good. They still look good when you move the sun/shadows around.

You can get more accurate results by combing AO for close up, Indirect Lighting for wider details, and Sky Lighting for broad illumination plus direct lighting and shadows. Like I talk about in the thread I made here: http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=1548.0

You can really see how GTA looks great with that combination and that is all done in real time with no baking, it also changes based on sun position. Although I do like how Outerra lights the models already.

EDIT:
Actually for now, I think baked AO is the way to go for buildings. Here is a screenshot of the scene with different lighting.

Awesome! That looks and renders great!
Could you possibly make a video which shows you flying towards the city from a few miles away at height?

Good test for the OT render engine.  Noticed some tearing and aliasing on the shadows, but overall, like others have said, it feels real.  With detailed diffuse maps for the buildings to create more variation, it would start to get closer to CGI!

The one think missing in all this outerra goodness is a large room with items in it. Which is what dynamic lighting is going to effect so we will have to wait. I think hiding the beautiful world and getting down and dirty with models and lighting like this really show something we have not seen before. It looks a lot like Hawken but better.
