It's almost the mid-year now so how soon can we expect the biomes? :)

Thanks to KW71's great help we now have lots of new tree species and their data prepared, and we also got cleaned and imported biome data. Now we only need to connect the generator to it using the right procedural rules.
The first alpha can be expected :-X soon™.

Good news! Am I right in hoping these will be fully 3D trees? Seasonal variation?

Well damn, then. If you would kill for that, I'd hate to see what you would do for a Klondike bar........   :))

No, not 3D, this is just about species distribution. We are also doing some tests with 3D trees, but that certainly won't go with the first release of biomes.

A request (or at least something to think about) Many arid and semi desert areas (like the grand canyon) are nonetheless covered in low scrub brush. It would be nice to see otherwise desolate areas in Outerra appropriately populated with these!

Yes, we are working on desertic species too...

edit:

Although, to see some species spawning there, at least for the time being, you'll need to set the forest threshold to 0.

We also found that there was an over-aggressive snow removal algo from the existing color data, that was making desert colors quite bland.

Damm! Here is!
I always guessed why picture from Blue Marble was diferent  (Lack of details inside outerra). And also comparing with satelite image using ctrl-Alt-G ingame.  North Africa was specially bald (as you show now here, i made same pics comparisson then, i should upload results by then, but i didnt..).
This was a part of my arguing when i begun talking about improve margin for terrain textures.
Appart deserts, i saw also other areas around the world (this will not only boost Desert areas, also many many places, even my place is a bit bald).
So now we have the answer.. Great discovering. I always though messing up a bit with main terrain textures can improve visuals.
Do you think it will be able in the next up?
