freezes at "Initializing World"

As above. The installation went ok but on running I get to the "Initializing world" box, a couple of bars appear at the bottom of the window and check for updates and then a single bar appears and starts to download something it ALWAYS gets to 500k or so and then the screen freezes and I have to press ESC and close the program down. Same thing happens if I try to run the tech demo rather than Anteworld.

Happened to several people at first launch with the new dataset. One solution is to download the whole thing, if you have enough hard drive space it's highly recommended (no longer small terrain downloads when you are in game).

Other solution is to just let the program run for a moment, apparently the freeze stop after a while and the download is resumed.
