A short video testing animation of 3D grass by reusing the ocean wave texture for computing the blade bending factor.

Mother of god. It is so delicate. So emotional..
I want to marry the grass.

That looks awesome! Really nice!

do you have a wind system in outerra? would be sweet if we could get realtime data into your awsome engine with visual feedback...e.g. on the grass :) ...me dreaming :P

Great work once again.
-
Sweet!...and efficeint use of the wave code too. 8)

Nice!
Have you tried it with longer grass blades? It will be awesome! :D (of course if this method works with longer blades)
-
lol That's awesome, though doesn't quite make sense. Just a test I hope.

Yes, for constructive feedback I would say it was too jerky and patchy, I would hope it would be more smooth and over larger areas, kind of like waves, in the same way that gusts of wind makes waves in the grass you see in real life.
Looks great otherwise.

Yes, for constructive feedback I would say it was too jerky and patchy,
granted this is strong wind and taller grass.. But..
Grass blowing in the wind. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qtIvxTeL1c#)
Pretty patchy to me...
Actually. Forget that. This real video looks fake as hell.

Not judging by Zeos' video, but yeah, it would have be faster paced and have a pretty quick transition between still and windy. That is if there will be differences in wind strength...

Must be the noice from a highway. ::) :P

Just love it :-). But it would be nice if grass could be a little bit longer and "wind" little bit stronger.

This grass is looking really fantastic in game. Its great to see more movement everywhere. Also, I'm starting to get a much better sense of scale and therefore speed with this terrain detail. One thing I think could make it look more authentic is more variety to the movement of randomized individual strands (fast deceleration/acceleration at random points throughout their movement). This could simulate collisions between leaves and make it look less like it's in a liquid. But this probably only applies to faster wind speeds. Its looking great already though.

Awesome stuff - can imagine this motion could be directly applied to the effects of propwash when taking off/landing on a grass strip, but also used radially for the downwash effect of a hovering helicopter.
I'm really looking forward to what you guys develop next - these tasters of what can be are great! It's hard to keep my expectations in check :D

A very pleasant surprise to discover this first hand while playing outerra :) Awesome job
