I thought it would be nice to start a thread with some inspiration for the devs. Nice pictures of nature and landscapes that we think Outerra should eventually look like :)
Here's one:

I better understand why Cameni said he have difficulties to make a multi-level world cloud coverage, in real time. This is so much massive and full of details...

How about this? Its the hugest color map of earth I've ever seen. I had fun zooming in trying to resolve it to individual pixels. Files are absolutely Ginormous! :o
Largest file is nearly 400 megs!

In the downloads section you will also find road data, train data, border data.......
It's a treasure trove!

Those arctic pilots have my respect there - not much a safe airspace up there. Also, that Syuz photo has a something special, that would be nice in OT - those half-planet stretched cloud shadows in combination whyte atmospheric effects of the near downed sun. Remember to seeing one short vid (newer seen it again afterwards - was a long time ago too) where some russian craft in space was crossing to the dark side of earth and showed, how before it gone there, crossed an cloud-shadow - that is really THE EPIC lighting effect.

Space station photo is lovely, makes me wonder what happened to Outerra's old ISS model? It's gone now :(

Right next to the Space Battleship Yamato..........
Maybe Outerra will have massive space battles one day. (And we need caves to fly through!!!)

I downloaded the free version of Vue and played a bit with it. Extremely slow, but quite amazing results. Of course nothing realtime, but for inspiration :) Vue uses procedural terrain and "ecosystems" that populate areas with plants et.c. I guess that's a bit like Outerra works.

I agree, that's exactly the kind of stuff that need to be in OT. Just can't imagine how they could do it on a world scale , like the field mapping...

Osm, I presume and something that fills in areas with "plausible" looking details. X-Plane 10 uses that technique, but I think Outerra could do it much better just by the nature of the engine.

Wow! those birch trees are amazing, and I love how they line up between the fields. Looks just like a trip outside town here :) That's really amazing, but I actually believe this is where Outerra is going. I know Cameni has talked about 3D trees, and making them sway should not be a problem. The fields are of course man made, and Anteworld is, well, before man ;) But I suppose if data could be imported that show areas of fields it would be possible to procedurally generate fields like this with plow lines and everything. I think the team needs to make a decision at some point to go for reality (as in roads, buildings, fields, forests) with everything placed like in real life. A true world sim, or just keep the "outlines" and let there be some creative freedom.
I guess Cameni can agree or disagree with me here, am I in the ballpark? :)

Only the natural distribution is "before man", or actually rather "after man" because we only have modern data for elevation and biomes, and these already show the effect of Man. However, all artificial land changes are going to be modeled by vector overlays using similar system as the roads, where you have a parametrized spline that also knows how to modify the land materials, heights etc.
With fields you'll have polygons that alter the natural distribution, changing the texture and height profiles to the type specified with the polygon. Being procedural, it can be also in a transitional state between the natural and the assigned one.
Cameni, hire that guy! :D
So I just checked, he's from a relatively close city in Czech rep. I saw he also got an Anteworld account :)

Well, if you do decide to contact him, and you are both able and willing to work together, my hopes for Outerra would go even higher, as it looks like he has already attacked some of the issues you are working on. In his second video, I especially took note of the water reflections.

I've looked at a lot of other solutions as well. Some are promising, but for real time, and complete range of features, Outerra is still out ahead. The I-novae engine is close behind, with what seems to be a complete lighting engine (nice!) but as for trees, roads, ships, planes, clouds......
Not quite yet.

I think Bullit can already pull that off. Don't know if Outerra is set up to take advantage of it yet though.

Well, we have a strong backbone of flight enthusiasts, a smaller cadre of land vehicle fans, a very tiny segment of boating guys and an unknown number of Space-sim guys.
Considering the obvious possibilities, especially considering the Oculus, we probably need more space guys.......

Yep :) Being able to work on scenery detail rather than road mappind would be awesome, however I think we won't see a fully working OSM-Outerra import tool soon, with the level of detail provided by Outerra and the lack of elevation data in the OSM sources, tricky solutions will be necessary!
And to avoid topic pollution, a cool flight video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mieYuDB5zLM
It's a Jaguar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEPECAT_Jaguar) formation flight, training for air shows. According to the video, they reach 7/7.5 G max in this training. The sound is really cool and the close view of the lead plane pretty amazing :)

... ah ... just an voice communication simulation of an interface. I really hope to see one day an AI and have a chat whyte it ... think the halo-concept of an man / digital assistance unit would be an interesting experience.

Yeah ... now when i see that picture again .... id say you try a too fast take-off. If ya can, try setting the joystick sensitivity to really low and get off the ground as slowly as it gets, trying to hower (or at least not to move in any direction too quickly).
Back at topic ... as those textures were posted, that should make some visual projection of different minerals on mountains ... i just thought of some inspirations :

It probably newer gets right for all the specially looking mountains, cause the way they were formed would have to be in procedural generation somehow, witch is probably almost impossible even of an one state area.

Outerra isn't using DirectX.
Yup. We all know that. But its still interesting to watch the advancements being made, especially as we begin to see more examples of real performance advantages from the emerging next-gen API's.
Edit: Seems to me that all that "writing to the hardware" while offering some advantages, will also offer difficulties in making efficient use of multiple threads.

Eric Bruneton Is a name that should be known to anyone interested in modern procedural worldbuilding. His project: PROLAND was and is a spiritual ancestor of Outerra, but after the Proland project, I heard little of him until in the last few days he suddenly resurfaced with new videos to add to his scholarly papers. Fascinating stuff, as always.
I always loved his RAMA stuff, and as usual there are probably insights useful to many other types of project.
And of course, if you are inclined to play, Mr Bruneton provides a real-time demo where the user can navigate in Rama with a helicopter-like vehicle, and view each light path contribution separately or combined with others, for a single or six linear source(s), and with or without ground textures. The demo provides a precompiled binary for Windows, as well as the full source code and a simple Makefile.

Is there some deeper reason why hes using inward oriented cylindrical environments ? (like some NASA vision for a far future space-station/craft ?) Or its just for simplifying math and result-examination ? ... its kinda interesting he projects environmental temperature trough irradiation, as a possible supplement for a star-light source: "the 6 linear light sources must provide a total power of 6.7MW.m−1 in order the get an illuminance of about 35.000lux at the ground level (on Earth, the illuminance when the Sun is at the zenith, with a clear sky, is about 100.000lux). This result is based on the hypothesis that the light sources emit only in the visible range, without producing any heat. The corresponding irradiance at the ground level is then 157W.m−2.
the flat linear light sources give an almost uniform temperature Ts=15°C at the ground level."
But cant imagine to have such sources all around a craft like that (it is like looking at the sun all the time) ...
-

This project is based on a Arthur C. Clarke novel :)
Btw, the most impressive video is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBIQCm54dfY
It's only a side project and he's still working on Proland (according to his personal website (http://www-evasion.imag.fr/people/Eric.Bruneton/)).

I haven't seen any new Proland information since around 2012, and don't see anything new mentioned at his various hangouts. I can only assume I'm cross eyed!
Could you point it out to me?

No, in fact it seems like you were right, he's not listed anymore in the team he was working with (https://team.inria.fr/imagine/team/ (https://team.inria.fr/imagine/team/)). I've done a few searches and was not able to find more.

I don't really know about I-Novae studies. Their program, Infinity, has a history possibly longer than Outerra's, and progress has been equally slow. Outera has surged ahead in the depiction of the planet earth and in the flora of the planet, while I-Novae has moved outwards instead and concentrated on outer space.
Outerra has incorporated libraries that allow for aviation, watercraft, and land vehicle simulation, whereas I-novae has concentrated on spacecraft and orbital mechanics.
Outera has introduced clouds and limited lighting, where I-Novae seems far ahead in both lighting, smoke and particle effects.
Are they rivals? They are procedural programs that seem to be heading in opposite directions, though its interesting to watch the individual programs evolve. I wonder if there is some innate difficulty that makes procedural worlds much harder than regular worlds to create. Things to ponder.

Is there some deeper reason why hes using inward oriented cylindrical environments ? (like some NASA vision for a far future space-station/craft ?)
This project is based on a Arthur C. Clarke novel :)
Yup, this is the inside of RAMA, a VERY large alien (and at first, apparently frozen and dead) spacecraft found speeding through our solar system in the book, which is about the team of earth scientists and explorers sent to try and figure out what it is before it finishes racing through our neighborhood, forcing them to leave fairly quickly after a quick look around if they ever want to get home before the ship takes them too far away.

Just something I bumped into that was interesting. Imagine if it was this easy to place cities in your favorite sim. Well, you kind of can. There is already a flight mod for this game.
I want Outerra to make scenery creation this easy!!!
Acetone would probably sacrifice a goat to make that happen. =D

... sounds like fun.
Those rings on I-novae are incredible. like the smooth blending between the long distance ring texture and the voluminous dusts at approach ... cant wait to see Jupiter in OT, when they're ready to do other solar systems planets. Doe, those ancient storms may be much more tricky, if we want to get to surface. (id like that) ::)

If you exclude the possibility of making roads cross at different heights and the auto soft connections between these, there is nothing really different here :)
(and surface areas but we don't have these yet, so it's hard to compare).
However, skyline UI is interesting. When we will be able to use OSM and vectorial areas, it would be nice to have the possibility to read directly some OSM infos through an information box.
I'm especially thinking of the area type and buildings informations stored in OSM. Having the possibility to use surface areas as a type and having it filled with a determined set of models could be interesting too, but it would require a lot of tweaking, correctly labeled buildings by type/size and will probably give strange results with OSM, in Skyline, these zones are really geometric and tied to a road, in OSM it's a lot more different (even when these are correctly made... ).
Also, let's not talk about sloped terrain, wick makes everything 10 times more difficult for these things :(
-
Yet X-plane managed to take such things and tie it to OSM. I think this is done even better.
And yes, somebody recreated GTA5 and added a (bad) plane mod........
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-4ozNZi6sc
Outerra could do this!!!!! (and notice the Game seems to handle uneven terrain fairly well)
EDIT: I was looking at a developer interview with No Mans Sky, which has a small team of about twelve people doing incredible work, and the lead developer was saying that when you hear of the 800 person teams, most of them are doing art assets. Looking at all the art that went into this, I can believe it. (though as mentioned, this is from a smallish team, too!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwb1SDSQHlE
More sloped terrain. I guess I like these sort of things because I see all the things Outerra could eventually be with enough resources applied. I guess its kind of my idea of a multisim utopia. :)

... isnt that the drone-capture stuff ?
-
I just updated to the latest version and actually looks like that. Of course the shadows are from the original photography. If you change the day time, those shadows + render low quality shadows wont look that nice.
However, the displacement detail is pretty amazing.
-
Really look amazing. It's too bad that the shadows have to be 'baked' into the texture. Like Python mentionned, this area have to be photograph by drones, the texture on the vertical rocks look perfect, not stretch. It could not have been captured by satellites, is it?
I guess in area where they can use drones to photograph under cloud cover to get ambient lighting, it will make the most realistic landscape texture ever in a 3d world.
-
The problems inherent in any current photoscenery technology...... (besides the enormous storage space requirements)
-
Well, till they get powerfull tools to "clear" those shadowy parts, they will have massive problems with this - specially when trying to blend two areas photographed at different times. I assume, there would be possible to make an automatic digital processing way, doe, they need to photograph for it in a much greater resolution, to capture the needed detail in the shadowy regions for it to work with comparable enough visual detail effect. So id say they have a few years to master that out.
What intrigues me is that "Google Earth flight simulator" announcment. I cant imagine it working on that "engine" theyre using for visualizing the Earth. Will be quite some pain and probably even performance issues trying to embed it into it in a much more complex way beyond this little thing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXD2x9bRWN8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXD2x9bRWN8)
There are also some pop-ups (0:34-0:36) - i think it didnt really muster to change the detail level ewerywhere (or at least it looks for me as the one rock in the center popped out, but all the left side plato, didnt change the detail at all - i ihink its that basic GoogleEarth "feature" of being focused only on small tiles right at the center of the view).
Also, the photo-look is amazing, yet i cant shake the feeling it couldnt handle somehow any nearer approach to the surface. As if theyre showing the approx. min height in the vid to look great, but actually landing, or near-passes or flights on helis - i think the IR-Photo way of capturing stuff may lead to weird stuff as vegetation cant be anything else than bulky things all around, especially in cityes. (and somehow, the FOV seems off for nearer approach).
... dont take me wrong, its a half century from anything the last MFS was, but ill still hold my money back for OT. ::)

Vehicle Simulator is a unique simulator, combining land, underwater, sea surface, air and low orbit environments into one, the program makes it possible to drive, fly, sail, dive, and go into space in one convincing simulation environment. The program excels especially as a flight simulator and as a naval simulator combining the powers of two previous simulators Micro Flight and Virtual Sailor into one, however the game engine was completely re written and has far greater capability and capacity than any of the previous ones it was made of.
- Vehicle Simulator has some unique and innovative features that stand out compared to other programs of its kind, here are some of them:
Ability to see air flow visualization, allowing you to learn how to soar cleverly using the rising currents of air caused by wind, thermals cloud suction.
Ability to design your landscape easily inside the program itself, in 3D, editing everything including the ground and vegetation upon it.
Ability to design your vehicle out of components, and elements, position and adjust each of them, giving your vehicle unlimited functionality.
Built-in simulation of Hang Gliders, Para gliders, Hot air balloons, dirigibles, planes, gliders, rocket planes, boats, cars, micro lights, and more.
Ability to import scenery directly out of SRTM data and using it on the fly without the need for any additional work.
Simulating animals of all kinds, on land air and water, and allowing creation of new ones and programming their behavior.
Simulating weapons of all kinds allowing you to practice weapon operation for the fun of it.
Advanced recording and playback of flights, and addition of pre recorded vehicles into an exiting one.
The program uses fully documented file formats, and invites a hands on experiences, noting is locked away from the user, allowing third party add-ons to be easily made.
Vehicle Simulator was created by Ilan Papini first version released in March 2009. Vehicle Simulator is based upon Micro Flight and Virtual Sailor, and combines them into one powerful program containing :
- Excellent graphics from ground level and up.
Excellent naval environment above and below water.
Excellent atmospheric model from ground up to space.
Excellent vehicle simulation for land, naval and flying vehicles.
Component based vehicle design making the program a great engineering tool.
Scripting language capability allowing complicated scenarios to be simulated and edited.
Vehicle Simulator has a much denser scenery than these two programs, an excellent physical simulation, and a totally flexible vehicle design.
Vehicle Simulator includes a built in scenery and vehicle design, making it much simpler for users to create and share content than ever before.
The simple yet powerful vehicle design makes Vehicle Simulator an excellent learning tool and also a powerful preliminary design tool.
Vehicle Simulator was designed to run on the average gaming machine specs available for 2008, however it can be adjusted to run on machines with less performance. Vehicle Simulator is built to use DirectX9 with vertex and pixel shaders 2.0 and volumetric textures. It is essential that your computer has a video card which is compatible with DirectX9.

I've worked with the developer on this sim, and he has quite a few of my models in game. For me they are mid range in detail. So some will be coming to Outerra, but only after have a poly boost.

Well its a PMDG plane he's flying, and those things suck FSX dry. These frame rates go a long way in explaining why flight sim fans are so hungry for an alternative.
-
... why flight sim fans are so hungry for an alternative.
Well, I do not think so, because otherwise the OT-forum was full of Flysim-Funs ... but is not the case.
-
To understand the flight sim community you have to consider that they want something better than what they've got now, right out the box, no bugs, low cost...
Fortunately we don't meet the requirements.... Phew.
-
Mostly I think its that the flightsim community has become ultra conservative, and tied so tightly to the FSX ecosystem that its hard for anything else to catch serious attention unless it offers such an obvious advantage that its a no brainer. Outerra is not quite there yet, but once cities and airports arrive, I don't see any way it can be ignored. It will be the modders that lead the way.
-
... why flight sim fans are so hungry for an alternative.
Well, I do not think so, because otherwise the OT-forum was full of Flysim-Funs ... but is not the case.
It was flooded with fans five years ago after Himalayan video (http://outerra.blogspot.ru/2010/08/himalayas-trip.html), and every flight community site had topic or even forum section dedicated to Outerra. But since then there wasn't much progress of OT in flightsim direction, so they all returned to their fsx, x-plane etc. And I think it will take en effort now to get them back.
-
I think most of the flight community is starting to understand that a all-in-the-box full simulation is not going to happen anymore, and as a result are expecting less from new sims.
The big turning point for many users seems to be roads and buildings, they often ask on Avsim what is the sate of the OSM integration. A pristine world is not enough to be convincing for them, but many seems to be interested to follow Outerra as soon as it will have the capability to be a nice looking VFR simulator :)

I tried that tech demo and went away with very mixed feelings. Granted it looks great, but I found it to be extremely hardware intensive and framey. Turning the settings low enough to get good frames resulted in visuals not much better than you could get with a nice Orbx scenery for FSX, and just that tiny demo area topped out at a whopping 5gigs.
That being said, I'm still interested to see what can eventually be done with it.
-
I didn't even know they have started making "Next Gen Flightsim" (http://nexgenflightsim.com/), sounds very interesting. Will be following this project.
Where did you get the demo? Or was it old Valley Unigine 1.0 benchmark?
Found the demo, though they claim it has nothing to do with NGFS
P.s. Tried the demo. It runs very well on my system (60fps), apart from seldom stutters when moving camera fast. Looks very impressive to me.
-
Found this on their forum (http://nexgenflightsim.com/discussions/#/discussion/115/outerra):
There's been a lot of discussions regarding Outerra in this forum along with the reasoning behind not choosing Outerra as the 3D engine of choice. As DanAir said... it's a complicated situation with the Outerra team in gaining access to a Outerra SDK for evaluation purposes... whereas UNIGNIE Sim (and all the other 3D engines) gaining access was easy.
Also... having had a good look at Outerra Anteworld... Outerra is not quite ready for prime time and there would be a tremendous amount of in house development necessary in order to be able to have the features that we're all wanting to see in a next generation flight simulator. Many of these features are already a part of UNIGINE Sim. Plus Unigine Sim is dedicated to creating a platform for the development of simulations...which fits perfectly with the direction we're heading towards here on the SIM-Posium.
Hope that helps,
Stephen B.
NGiS team now working on Corsica tech demo, with all the airports/details etc. 2016 promises be very interesting year for simmers (that is, if WW3 won't destroy us all).
Stephen's enthusiasm actually reminds me of David Lagettie, CEO of TitanIM. I wish them both best of luck :)
-
I don't believe the symposium did anywhere near a good enough review of the user requirements or the capabilities and possibilities of 3d engines available.
You don't create a symposium to last 300 days or so and then half way through it say that's finished we're moving onto the next stage.
Having been contacted to join the team I had a hard look at all that was being offered.... 4 years of expected development, my hobby turned into sudo employment.... not part ownership of the product as that remains solely in stephan hands....
The talk of Zuckerberg or Jobs isn't for us but for Stephan.... as the volunteers are just possibly employees of stephans company.
I hope it succeeds, but not at the cost of my hobby or desire.
-
That's always the issue when working in big team, that's why I prefer work myself as one-man addon maker. Had same problem working 2 years for TitanIM - interesting hobby became a dull boring job quite fast when you are just an employee.
I hope that NGiS sim will be opened for addon makers as MSFS and X-plane.
-
Maybe then the trick would be to retain our hobby yet also accept some level of focus, such that we're all going in roughly the same direction.
-
Tried the Port Angeles demo too, and I think it's worth keeping an eye on it.
I like the color richness compared to OT. Tree rendering is quite good aswell (with a few techniques we know from OT).
Got some heavy stuttering (probably loading issues) but not really bad framerates. 3DVision works (not with clouds on).

The stuttering is from some very heavy just-in-time loading (I believe) and was very distracting to me. I hope they can work around it.
Also they need some real clouds. If you try to reach them in the demo, you will find that you can't.
I liked the color richness very much as well, but at the time I was looking at it, NGIS said it wanted us to "evaluate" the demo; which to me, meant looking for possible flaws as well as going "Wow!"
I pretty much felt like Bomber about that evaluation process, in the end.
Nonetheless, I wish them well.

Tonywob: Moderator of the Avsim Outerra forum, creator of world2Xplane, and a member here (who graciously donated hundreds of world2xplane buildings which have been used in many Outerra scenery projects) is also one of X-planes foremost OSM experts and has expressed the desire to work on Outerra.
Here, he is showing his latest project for X-plane: Norway Pro, an Osm project that doesn't require photoscenery, and it looks great! I'm really hoping he gets a crack at Outerra OSM one day!

I've been using this one: https://www.windyty.com/
Its listed as a Wind map and weather forecast for kiters, surfers, pilots, sailors and anyone else, and it has a lot of detailed features.
Lower right hand corner is a dropdown for various altitudes. Clicking on the various selections above that gives you different views, like pressure, clouds, snow..... etc. if you click on a particular location.... like a storm, for instance, you will get a pop up offering you detailed information for that location.
Drilling down even further (scroll with mouse and mouse wheel) you will see individual airports and can get even more information.
(Or even easier, just type an airport ICAO or name of a location under search)
Have fun!

Oh, interesting!!! Thanks for sharing!

What got me about this was how very plain the procedural "city" was in the daylight.... and how pretty the lights were at night. I sometimes feel like that about X-plane, which is why I often fly it at night.

I didn't even know they have started making "Next Gen Flightsim" (http://nexgenflightsim.com/), sounds very interesting. Will be following this project.
It tuns out NGIS lost access (http://nexgenflightsim.com/discussions/#/discussion/319/update-1-24-2016) to Unigine engine, so there's nothing to follow anymore really.
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.

these guys using a LAN ?
This is all I found:
Here's a brief description of the process:
Participating teams hosts a game server
Pilot joins the server
Camera man joins the server
The camera man positions his camera on the airfield and connects to the streaming software.
The pilot flies his show as the camera watches, filming the show as if he was filming a real display.
Whatever is on the cameraman's screen is uploaded through the streaming software and broadcast onto the selected channel.
The audience watch the show on a website (For vfat, the website will be http://www.livestream.com/virtualairshows (http://www.livestream.com/virtualairshows))
Once the pilot has finished the show, the camera man stops broadcasting.
The next team will repeat this process, broadcasting to the same channel.

I tried to use the Google earth coordinates for that screenshot, but wasn't quite near (maybe I missed a number), so I use the Map feature (outerra) and add the runway with Map (satellite view), of course didnt pay much attention to other details.

Dovetail got sun glare right.... that's what I'd like to see
I don't know, it looks too sharp, like a camera effect rather than something you would see with your own eyes. I REALLY don't like camera effects on my games.

Hi zombie, let me see if I can explain why I said what I did and why I think it's not a static effect .
First question, have you ever actually looked at the sun ? Like on a cloudless day, the sort of action your doctor will tell you would blind you ?
Well it does actually look more like the first image than any of the others and thats what I'm talking about...
The problem is you can look at the plane the scenery and the sun is wrong because of that glare.... and here I agree with you.
If I was to write a specification for the sun as wanted by a user it'd be something like..
The sun's glare flare intensity to be variable depending upon the sun's position relative to the screens centre and the length of time..
Such that a glance of the sun past the screens centre produces a short intensity flare which returns to nothing quickly..
A long lingering look with the sun 10 degress to the side of the screens centre results in the flare expanding and a residual after glow remaining when looking elsewhere which disminished inversely proportional to the flare intensity..
The aim here is to be able to hide behind the sun as a fighter pilot.... and you could only do that with the first image....

Not the best angle because of low sun and resulting high haze (and people used to fake haze-less renderings), so here are some more:

I can completely agree with that approach. It would even make the sun glare more interesting to see, having it on 24/7 regardless of the angle is the equivalent of living on rainbowland where there are rainbows everywhere, a really lame idea. I still believe they need to tone down the sharpness of it, mainly the hexagon, that's a camera effect caused by the shape of the aperture on a lens, on the human eye (at least mine, just went outside to check, 3PM on a summer sunny day proved to be the perfect time for this test) the shape of glare is more or less circular.

Would have been nice to at least be given credit for the original comparisons. The Outerra shot in the first post is not mine, by the way. That one appears to be courtesy of Celis (http://www.avsim.com/topic/483730-dfsp3dflightfsx-comparison-screenshots/page-2#entry3375224).

@cameni: Great to see an Outerra developer chiming in with an accurate comparison! In case you're interested, here's the exact latitude/longitude/altitude/pitch/bank/heading that I used:
Latitude: N47° 15' 27.39"
Longitude: E11° 17' 19.48"
Altitude: 3679.48 feet
Pitch: -12.660052739847529
Bank: 11.21676821280645
Heading: 96.820694389293521
I'm not sure if it's of any use, but the visibility was set to 20SM (statute miles) in my shots (and appears to be same in the DFS one). Also, the date/time was: May 5, 2016 @ 07:08:29 local time.

90% of the time I do post links, but I swear most people here never go to Avsim. When they started locking people out unless they signed in (to cut down on bandwidth I believe) some people said they could'nt see my links to Avsim and weren't willing to create accounts. =| http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=3029.0
Sorry about that, I will start linking more frequently again, and see if there is a better response.

No worries! As a developer, I've gotten in the habit over the years of making sure anyone I work with or who's work I use is given proper credit no matter what. I just naturally find that kind of stuff now and point it out, at least. It's nothing personal. :)

Ah, that would have helped. Except for visibility, there's no artificial visibility limiter in OT.
I only roughly estimated the date by the position of the sun.
But I'm also guilty of not crediting properly: the camera position and fov settings were kindly provided by KW71 who nudged me that I should post some comparisons with the new dataset.

30m dataset
For me the best image for the matter of this comparisson is the first one. And if you can do the trick for be in a point where the trees shadows are full, then even better.
The 30m dataset result is PURE LOVE!! Mountains profile are radically improved (i was surprised about how much they are, in this image can see very clear).
For my opinion, your picture is the total winner compared with all the others engines. Its almost REAL. And this, taking in account Outerra engine strong point, where no other global engine can compete, is when you go down to the floor..
What i just miss is a bit more color (saturation), and a little bit more blue. Adding it in photoshop end up in a literally real picture.

That's great news. I've not kept up with Outerra recently, but it's always exciting looking at the changes being made. While I'm not a programmer, what goes into a graphics engine really intrigues me.

Yeah, I've also been a member of AVSIM since 2010 and have over 1,400 posts there. I just don't come here much as most of my forum browsing is flight sim-related because of my development work.
I only requested credit. That's all. I know Devon (HiFlyer) from his posts on AVSIM over the years and I'm aware he meant no harm - he's a nice guy. Let's move on, shall we?

Cool, thanks! Never heard of Tileproxy before.
That's a really clever solution for good (and free) quality photoscenery. Not really legal, however. Same problem as usual, eat a metric ton of memory (using a SSD just for that, seriously?) and look bad from close distance, but for a free solution, it's a really nice result :)

I love the new rain effect, but I think it may be a bit too subtle. Its very hard to see unless you are standing nearly motionless. When moving fast or from a plane, in the air, its pretty much invisible. Which started be thinking about how others have approached depicting rain.

99.99% of the procedural cities I see on the web honestly look like doggy poop; usually consisting of grids of varying-height rectangles that look like a ten year old set all his Lego's on edge. Either that or they are slow, or change lod with horrible obviousness or........ sigh.
So its great to find one that seems to work well.
It gives me optimism for Outerras eventual cities! Fly around a bit!

That's really, really nice. It seems to be a puzzle game, I wonder how performance goes. I'm guessing Outera will eventually have another layer of clouds, but I wonder if ground wetness is viable too, that certainly adds a lot to the simulation aspect for ground focused applications (racing, troop combat simulators, etc).
The water is also really pretty, a bit stylized, but looks great.
