Outerra Tech Demo
Free tech demo, upgradable to the Anteworld sandbox game (alpha)
Outerra Engine (http://outerra.com/wfeatures.html) is a unique world rendering engine capable of seamlessly rendering whole planets from space down to ground level. It can use real world data to render the planets realistically, while also dynamically refining the data using procedural algorithms to provide high ground-level detail.
The engine provides unlimited visibility obstructed only by the planet's curvature, with details ranging from thousands of kilometers down to centimeters. Real time atmospheric rendering, oceans with shore waves.
It can integrate vector data overlays for roads, and land class modifications. Uses the JSBSim Flight Dynamics Model library for high fidelity simulation of aircraft, and Bullet physics engine for simulation of vehicle physics. Terrain and fractal algorithms maximally utilize the GPU, leaving the CPU resources for simulation.

Hardware requirements
Outerra engine runs on OpenGL 3.3 and requires recent graphics drivers. It will warn you if your drivers are outdated, or even refuse to run in case you've got old ATI drivers that are known not to work at all.
The minimum requirements are:- Windows Vista and higher, limited Windows XP support
- Nvidia 8xxx series or better, AMD/ATI 5xxx or better with recent AMD/ATI drivers (http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx) (older ATI series are no longer supported by AMD and their legacy OpenGL 3.3+ drivers are buggy)
- Recent graphics drivers!
- 512MB graphics memory
- 2GB RAM
- 500MB disk space for the initial install, up to 15GB for fully downloaded Earth dataset
Recommended:- Nvidia 470GTX or better, ATI 6870 or better
- 1GB graphics memory
- a 2-core CPU

Tech demo
This alpha release features:
- A complete, real scale planet Earth that can be explored
- Created from real elevation data with resolution 90m where available, 1km resolution for oceans; data are dynamically downloaded as you go
- Further refined by fractal-based procedural techniques down to centimeter-level details
- Vector-based road system that integrates with the procedurally generated terrain
- Adjustable lighting and environment parameters
- Oculus Rift support
The demo comes with the whole planet Earth that can be explored in a free-camera (UFO) mode or in a testing vehicle (8-wheeler truck). There's also a first person walking mode.
Full version
After upgrading to the full version (alpha, access to all further versions), the following additional features become available:
- Road and runway editor
- Editor for placing static objects
- Additional vehicles - aircraft driven by the JSBSim flight dynamics engine
- Model importer for static objects, ground vehicles and aircraft
- Ability to export and share mods with others
- Dynamic terrain deformation (craters)
People who like it and/or want to support us and the development of Outerra engine can buy the alpha release of Anteworld at a discounted price. Doing so will give you access to regularly released alpha/beta updates of the game, together with the final version when it's done. The price will gradually rise with each major release.
You will also become our beta-testers, with ability to influence the priorities of the development.
The full game includes more vehicles, allows you to use vehicle mods made by users, a basic sandbox tool set allowing you to create roads and runways and place stock or imported objects. A model importer and vehicle configurator enables you to create custom models and vehicles and share it with others. It also enables you to play with dynamic terrain deformation (craters) and more things being regularly released. Changelog for the active version can be found in the [http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?board=14.0]latest version[/url] topic.
The demo contains a few locations around the world (a couple of them were created by our tester Pico). Data for the default location are already included within the installer, the rest of it will be downloaded automatically on demand as you explore the world (note: proxy servers aren't supported yet for data download). The total size of the data is around 15GB, but normally you'll download just a fraction of the size, unless you traverse the whole planet surface at a low altitude.

Limitations of current alpha state of the technology
This alpha release comes out to show the potential of the engine, but it still lacks many features commonly found in other engines, and especially the effects are postponed until the major features are implemented.
The demo currently comes with just a single biome - northern type forests. There are no rivers and lakes implemented yet, and no weather yet.
Almost all the areas are work in progress.
Known Issues
The alpha state of the engine also means that it's not very optimized yet. It consumes more GPU memory than it should, and spends some time rendering things that is not eventually visible etc.
Windows XP (32bit): Because of a lower and fixed limit on available system memory for GPU transfers on 32-bit Windows XP you may encounter a not-enough memory problem. In this case please close all other apps, especially browsers and other apps that consume a lot of NP (non-paged) memory as shown in the Task Manager.
Driver issues: Please check the Graphics driver issues (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=705.0) topic to resolve the most common issues with the drivers.
Anteworld game
Anteworld* is a world-building game on a massive true-to-life scale of our planet. Returning aboard an interstellar colonizer ship built in the Golden Age of Mankind, players arrive on the planet earth to discover civilization and humanity vanished. They will have to rebuild the civilization - exploring, fighting, and competing for resources while searching for clues to the disappearance of humanity.
The game will contain several modes, the basic one will be a single-player game but with player-built locations being synchronized and replicated between clients. That means player can settle in a free location of his choice where he can build and play, and when he goes exploring he'll be able to observe and visit other sites where other players are building their world.
There's going to be also a multiplayer mode for gaming in the existing world.
Sim-connect mode should allow to use Anteworld as an image generator for another simulation program.
In fact, Anteworld is meant to create the basis for an Outerra game/sim platform, allowing to create mods and new game modules that would run on the existing backend.
*The name comes from Latin prefix Ante-, with the meaning of prior-to in time. A world that was. There's going to be an accompanying novella written by C.Shawn Smith that should be loosely tied to the game.
Here's a sample, the epilogue: The Outerra Initiative - Epilogue (http://outerraworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/The%20Outerra%20Initiative%20-%20epilogue.pdf)

Shame I'm stuck with a PC that doesn't meet the minimum specs, but I'm glad to see Outerra taking such a big step. 8) :P ;D
-
Awesome, can't wait to try it out!
-
Downloaded, seeded (and still seeding at a slow 64KB/s), tried it out, found that it runs more than satisfactorily on my HD5770 (processor is a Core 2 Duo E8400 @ stock 3.0GHz), and bought it!
Congrats on your first public release!
-
By the way, even though I already have it, I'm downloading the torrent and will seed for a few weeks to help out with the distribution :). I see there's only 4 seeds at the moment hehe, but the download speed is great.
-
It's AWESOME. period.
mh... should you set up a bug reporting area somewhere... I'v already a few to report ;-)

Yeah, found it ;)
Thanks.
Don't know if the devs will pick this bug up:
I can't edit resolution etc while inside the app. I had to edit the cfg file instead.

Hooray for going public! ;D
Sorry I can't seed much, guys. I don't think it would that big of a deal anyways. I get < .33Mbps upload and my family and I need it for other things. :-\
-
A quick tip in case you guys wish to see other locations quickly:
- pick google maps and spot the location
- right click and select "what's here" (maybe different, I've translated here)
- copy decimal coordinates
- go here and convert decimal to minutes/seconds: http://www.calculatorcat.com/latitude_longitude.phtml (http://www.calculatorcat.com/latitude_longitude.phtml)
- into outerra, go to lat/lon and put those values
Happy exploring to all!! ;D

A quick tip in case you guys wish to see other locations quickly:
Still think backing out to space at 10,000 MPH 1,000 Miles per second. Then putting on the in-game google maps (G Key) and flying towards your target modifying your path and slowing your flight speed (pgUP pgDN keys) as your google map zooms and shifts will still be faster.
...and more fun!
PS. Are you sure the decimal place lat-lon don't just work in OT?

I didn't know there was the "G" key... ehm... too hard guess! :-)
I can't go farest than 200000m with altitude and shift key don't accelerate so much, or there is another tip to fly faster?
Thank you for the "G" tip though..

According to the error report, you have some weird graphics driver installed. Can you update to some recent official Nvidia drivers?
-
I will try right now

why only credit card :-\
Should Do Paypal/debit card also.. What are you trying to use?
-
FYI, on laptops with NVIDIA Optimus, you will have to force the executable to launch with the NVIDIA chip. The game doesn't seem to trigger the auto-detect correctly, and crashes when trying to run on the integrated Intel Sandy Bridge graphics.

That round tray that comes out of your computer isn't for coins. ;)

I tried debit but there was no option. Now i send some Money to Paypal and hope to pay then this way in one or two days. Until that, I discover our Planet in a new way of beauty I didn't realized until now. Thx for your hard work!!!!
-
Thanks! Now it works great

Hey guys great work really impressed but I'm having this same issue. When I close and restart the game after making settings changes the settings are reset to the defaults. Any ideas?
-
Maybe its a cfg file permission problem? Will try running as admin and see if that helps
EDIT: Nope thats not it, can switch between windowed resolutions by restarting but no full screen joy.

You enter your debit card through the credit card option on Paypal. (The card might have to be Visa though. I'm not sure.)

I think I noticed that too when I decided to finally have it make a new cfg file with the last update, so I just went back to my old file that I've been using since it's format change a little while ago. I guess I just thought it was a fluke. Sorry, I should have mentioned it. :-[
For those of you who want to try it (and really want full screen NOW :P), go to where you installed Outerra/Anteworld and find the eng.cfg file (some of you might have the ".cfg" part hidden from view). Open that in notepad and find "fullscreen =" and replace "false" with "true" (without the quotes). You can also look around at the other things to modify to your liking if you know what you're doing.
-
One known issue - when you have UAC on Windows enabled, don't set the program directory for the data, it won't work correctly. I need to detect that case and disable the option in the installer.
-
I so badly want to buy it, but Paypal is not cooperating with me....
Is there anyway you could support Google Checkout, or other payment methods?
-
We'll be adding other methods, but Google Checkout (the business side) isn't available in our country yet. With PayPal you can also pay by a credit/debit card without having a PayPal account.
-
Amazing! I'm still getting to grips with it. Performance doesn't seem too great for me, though... in somewhat-detailed areas, like the temple, I get 15-20 FPS on default settings, 1680x1050 fullscreen, with an i5-2500k and a Radeon 6870. I heard there were issues with AMD cards... hope you can iron them out soon!
-
Great to hear this great news.
Though I'm getting an outdated drivers error, even though I have the latest amd drivers. :(
-
Please attach your eng.log (from the data dir) here so I can check it.
-
Wow fast reply, I cant seem to find that file, In the install dir right?
-
Sorry for the double post, here it is.
-
You have OpenGL driver 6.14.10.10907, but the latest drivers (Catalyst 12.1) are 6.14.10.11399
-
Ok thanks, Ive installed the latest 2 times now but it wont update properly, gna keep trying
-
Try to uninstall the old one first, or try a driver cleaner (sweeper).
-
No luck unfortunately, thanks for your help though.
-
I'm also having some pretty horrific artifacting issues:
My GPU temp is fine (under 85 degrees) so this doesn't seem like it should be happening.
-
When I launch, it has a black screen. When I force close it, it crashes with this:

Thanks, it looks like an issue with a USB input device - will inspect further.
-
Here's my eng.log, but there doesn't seem to be anything of interest regarding my issues:
http://pastebin.com/5qj86iD8 (http://pastebin.com/5qj86iD8)
-
Right, nothing interesting in there. Have you got any such issues with other OpenGL games?
-
Nothing. Everything else I've tried using OpenGL or D3D is fine. The artifacting goes away if I look at certain angles, but most of the time it's there.
-
Hmm, this is similar to issues we were having with earlier ATI drivers, but yours is ok.
When you go away somewhere (in ufo mode) far away where there are no objects, are the artifacts still there?
-
Really nice, looking forward to what's coming up next!
-
I'm not sure if this is an issue or PEBKAC, but my UFO mode moves at a snail's pace. It seems to be moving about half a metre per second of holding down a movement key; page up and page down don't seem to do anything. However, it was working fine before, and the artifacting didn't seem to be an issue at distance. I think having user-defined objects may be related to the artifacting.
-
Maybe the objects affect it too, you could jump to an empty area by entering longitude & latitude coordinates in the locations window to see if it helps.
-
Yes yes I said we were near it... but WHERE IS MAH PREORDER BUTTON ?!
-
Run the demo, the login window that pops up has the buy link, or you can create an account there that too leads to the preorder page.
-
.
-
It will convert it for you.
-
One thing... I'd like to go in a place directly clicking on the map and not by ufo, especially because if you go too far it'll start downloading tons of terrains...
EDIT2: if you go too far and it downloads too much terrains it bugs with a black space.
-
You can enter latitude & longitude of the location of interest in the locations window, it will jump you directly there. Whole world is included.
-
How do you switch from ufo to person ? I don't see a command for it.
EDIT: you can start and stop recording with f9, but I found it only because I pressed random buttons :P
-
There's a temporary human model on key 8

Key 8 ?
Where are the controls settings (what directory I mean) ?

Well done guys!!, and may this be the beginning of something great!

You can't go fullscreen in demo ? Or how do you apply your changes ?

In your data directory where you installed it (by default your home folder \ Outerra). Look for iomap.cfg
Graphics settings need restarting - sorry for the missing alert.
-
I did restart with no results...
EDIT: ok I forgot to change resolution.
-
I can't roll with ufo, and can't get to work human model.

What does it record ... only the movement? And how can I repeat the rec?

It records videos in YOG format. YOG was designed to not affect the performance much, but the videos are quite large. After capturing you'll need to convert them to other known formats using these tools (http://www.outerra.com/video/ffmpeg-yog.zip) (from this page about YOG (http://www.outerra.com/video/)).
F8 captures screenshots. Screenshots and videos are captured to your data directory by default, you can change the paths by editing eng.cfg

Thx for the Info ...
I was looking a little bit in the folder structure and saw many nice things ... scripts for B737, F16, T34 (Tank I think) ...
One more Question I got ... can I edit the Texture for the 8x Wheeler (dont know the Name of this vehicle) without getting any problems with the engine?
Thx for your great support ... I know its weekend but you're doing great things here!
-
In the future will we able to make vehicles with blender or what programm ?
-
In the future? we are able TODAY to make vehicles in blender like a boss. Blender has an excellent collada-exporter. The japanese buildings in the demo were made 100% in blender. We just have to wait for the possibility to import new models into the game. Ok, its just that easy for static objects. I dont know like it is for dynamic objects. But i'm sure thats possible.

The truck's derived from Tatra T817. I'm not sure you will be able to edit the textures, as they are using an extension from DX10 and almost no editor recognizes it. We will be changing it to normal DDS format, just to make the modding easier.

Thanks for the test of anteworld , it's cool.
I make a little video of a visualisation problem: abrupt appearance of trees on the mountain.

I'm getting a pretty bad case of the blurrys, but when i look directly down then up again the small area around me is fully loaded. Running the 285.62 Nvidia driver.
I can post screenshot if wanted.

I've been following this project for quite some time and it is awesome to finally see it first-hand. Great work.
Is there a way to change the FOV in the cfg? I find the default way too narrow.

Do you have anisotropic textures disabled in the driver? That will give you one hell of blurriness in OT.
-

Um, I think FOV isn't exposed in the cfg, yet - I'm making a note to get it there.

Anisotropic textures is on, and ive tested 2x through to 16x manually with no avail.

Please upload a screenshot. Btw did you try to adjust the terrain quality in settings? That can affects blurriness as well.

Here's the Screenshot, its at 1080P so should i be setting it back to say 480?
*Edit
Changed the Negative LOD bais to "Clamp" think its had a slight benefit.
-
I'd like to purchase this but the demo crashes on startup lol. Didn't expect it to work on this machine though. I'll be back on my main pc in a week. Keep being awesome until then, alright?
EDIT: Nevermind. Just needed a driver update.
-

I see. You boosted the quality, but now the terrain generator doesn't have enough memory to keep all terrain tiles in cache. Since it's not yet linked, please adjust the limit-fractal slider to allow for a bigger terrain cache (this assumes you've got more than 512MB on-GPU memory). You could also lower the quality a bit, finding a compromise.
-
Alright, changed the Limit-fractal slider to 600 (hope thats not going to cause issues) and 600p is suiting me fine enough w/ good fps. Thanks alot for your help Cameni your a legend. :D

I was wondering, is there a way I could buy the game non-electronically? Like mail the money, or something? I could toss in my requested account credentials with it along with the money and maybe that'd work?
-
Where to report Bugs?
The Southpole looks a bit ... ehm ... crazy ^^

Not quite possible, but maybe a bank transfer.

There's a support board in the Anteworld forum category.

and I still say the UFO doesn't roll with Q and E. Did you check the sea near the right part of italy ? It's bugged.

and I still say the UFO doesn't roll with Q and E. Did you check the sea near the right part of italy ? It's bugged.
As far as I can tell both issues are known to Cameni and Angrypig.
-
You need to turn off the auto-roll control first, but for some reason it's not bound in iomap.cfg.
And yes, there is plenty of bugs with seas and shores, it's WIP.
-
Good. Also, for me the way you change speed is ok, maybe it should go a little... faster ? Especially if you are in space.
@cameni: I tried turning off the auto-roll, maybe it's a conflict with the HUD keybind ? In options I saw toggle auto-roll ctrl as tab (HUD too is tab).
-
Yes the speed limit should be higher, and there's a bug in the multiplier - will be fixed in the next version.
We'll check the autoroll bindings too.

One known issue - when you have UAC on Windows enabled, don't set the program directory for the data, it won't work correctly. I need to detect that case and disable the option in the installer.
I installed it in program files, have UAC on AND THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS. Don't disable that option...
-
At what level you have the UAC?
-
This is awesome i already bought it. I have a few questions tough:
1. Is there any water? I seem to find huge flat areas with nothing in sight. Is it where the water is supposed to be?
2. Is there a multiplayer?
3. Is there a better way to change locations?
-
- Only the oceans, but no lakes & rivers yet.
- No multiplayer yet.
- You can enter lat/lon of your desired location (in the Lat/lon tab) and then save it under a name of your choice. Will add the ability to double-click on Google maps later.

Quick one, is the ISS in the techdemo? If so, anyone have co-ordinates? :)
Also, guys you will have my money as soon as paypal stop being d***s >:(

Turns out the drivers on this computer haven't been updated since 2009 haha. Loaded up the latest ones and no more crash on startup.
-
Never modified the level, it's the default one. If you don't know what the default one is, I'll write a reply with the level.

The ISS is in the game for sure, don't know if it's implemented, though you can find it in the folder packages.

Can I repeat my request for a Linux version?
Is it at least planned?
-
Yep it is planned, but we first need to resolve major issues we've got here.
Btw somebody was trying it in Wine, there was a crash - it would be neat to have some logs or a stack trace from it.
-
Maybe a iOS/android version would be too much :P
-

Thanks, then I'll shut up to let you do your work and wait eagerly :)Btw somebody was trying it in Wine, there was a crash - it would be neat to have some logs or a stack trace from it.
I can't help here as I'm not using Wine. It was allways much more hazle for me than it could solve. Emulating everything (through VirtualBox) worked fine out of the box, so that's fullfilling all my needs for running those few Windows Apps that I still need. (But I wouldn't try to give it Outerra to run. The 3D support of VirtualBox is still experimental)

Is there any way to download the complete terrain data?
It is really annoying to wait a minute or more for a few MB.
I would rather download 12GB which takes 15min with my connection than wait everytime.
-
Yes cameni will upload the 12 GBs of data soon.
-
I am running smooth on my Core2Duo E8600 3.33 Ghz and Nvidia GTX570 1280 MB, but I seem to be limited to a maximum of 30 frames. Someone here with a quad core processor and a recommended video card is getting more than 30 fps?
-
Go to graphics settings and set vertical sync to off.
Also, you can boost terrain quality to 600p or 720p with that card, in terrain settings.
-
Ok, thanks for the tip. Buying the upgrade I will have the whole world? I'm so curious to see my beautiful city Rio de Janeiro and its mountains, especially the Sugar Loaf. The X-Plane 10 made it a mess. A pity.
-
The world is complete even in the demo mode :)
Go to Locations, Lat/lon and enter the desired latitude and longitude.
-
I can't run it, I get ''unknown video card'' message and it crashes. My video card is a GT540m. This is my log:

I think that the game isn't recognizing my 540m but the integrated graphic card.

Excuse me for a moment.. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.
Downloading :D If this works on my PC, I'll be spending the rest of the evening in Outerra :3

You have to force it to use Nvidia GPU for Outerra in driver profiles.

I tried but it doesn't work. I did it by secondary click on outerra.exe and configuring it in the nvidia control panel. Are there any other way to force it?
-
I don't have such a setup so I don't know how it's exactly being done; I just know that people with these dual chips reported that they had to set it in profiles, so it's definitely possible. Maybe you need to update the drivers first?

I have already updated both. And it's configured with nvidia graphics as default, but outerra seems not to recognize the changes.
-
I found this video about setting the profiles:

Exactly! This is what i've done, but still doesn't work.
-
We are looking at ways to force the driver to use the correct path. Originally it was not possible at all, but now there's some api from nvidia that could be used. But it's weird it does not work through the profiles .. I hope it doesn't mean that it will ignore the api setup too.
-
Hmm... I tried disabling integrated graphics in control panel, same error...

Hi there! I've got one issue with the propeller shadows. It happens mostly when i'm facing the sun. This is it:

Thank you for your help!

Hi there! I've got one issue with the propeller shadows. It happens mostly when i'm facing the sun.
Awesome Stuff. Does it look the same from the inside?
-
Hmm- Can't get mine to startup, when I do it reports
LoadLibrary failed with error 998:Invalid access to memory location.
I've re-installed and switched where the library data is downloaded to with the same result. I've also added the folder to my anti-virus exclusion list. It makes no difference running as admin either.

If you have UAC enabled, don't set your data directory to Program Files - Windows will block creation of folders and files there from within outerra.exe
-
I don't have UAC enabled and I've just re-installed on a non-Windows drive with the same result?

Hmm I wonder what library it tries to load at that point ...
Have you got any antivirus software running? Try to disable it.

Hmm the latest Nvidia Verde drivers support OpenGL 4.2, so it looks like yours aren't the latest ones. Older drivers were also buggy when trying to force the GPU profiles, see for example http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/21474-help-resolving-nvidia-optimus-issues/ (http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/21474-help-resolving-nvidia-optimus-issues/)
-
Any ETA on the Anteworld site? Or is it only going to be avaible when the game comes out?
-
Will update something when there's more time, we need to create some content for it as well. No rush though, this release was mainly about the tech demo, there's no game-specific content yet.

hmm I have already updated with lastest drivers. Is it possible to exist an incompatibility between lastest and olders updates?
-
Try to uninstall it first, perhaps using a driver cleaner (driver sweeper), and then install the drivers again.

Works nice (Graphic), but only when Id like to move (by key, not by mouse) demo has CTD. UAC is off in my OS.

Did the crash bring up the crash reporter window?
-
Cameni stop the UAC story :P. It works fine for me :P.
-
But it definitely does not work for everyone. We have our internal tester that's reporting it ...
-
Seems pretty strange. Maybe they modified the level of UAC ?
-
So you have the default UAC level set, and your data.cfg points to Program Files, right? Did you try to take a screenshot (F8)? Does it create the "screenshots" directory there?
-
you guys are awesome! keep up the good work! :D

Yes, eventually we will go only 64bit. It's 32bit at the moment just because of some libraries, but no big issue. Will need more testing though.
-
Great, as everyone knows 32bit exe can cause problems in the future due to limited RAM access.

Hmm, you could try turning off DEP for outerra.exe.
Computer -> System properties -> Advanced system settings -> Performance (Settings ...) -> Data Execution Prevention tab
But on 12.2 preview page (http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst122Previewdriver.aspx) I read that AMD Radeon HD™ 7900 users should keep using the 8.921.2 RC11 driver found here (the 12.2 preview does not support the AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series).

Late edit: It's called "Default": starting up and going down, the second.

Perhaps a problem with Win 7 64? Any use this?
Sorry I have 12.3 : http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=2858 (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=2858)
It supports 7970.
-
Perhaps a problem with Win 7 64? Any use this?
Plenty. Majority, I'd say.
79xx cards and 12.2 preview driver is more likely as that's rare, but the strange thing is why does it happen only when moving ...
-
Just tried 12.3 driver with ATI 6850 card, W7-64, everything works normally.
I'm wondering if it's not caused by something else, the association with starting the movement is strange. What about the sound card drivers?
-
Great job :) It's looks really amazing :D I am gonna buy full version today :)
Do you have any plans about creating something like resources/addons/additional content system? And what with scripting? There will be possibility to write own code in eg. lua language?
-
Can my ati radeon hd 3200 graphics with amd turion x2 dual-core mobile rm-72 run this? i have 2 gb of ram free also... i also know another engine, called space engine where you can go to any galaxy where you want, combine that with this and you get your self an real-life game >:D
-
Ati often makes trouble. The chance is additional increased by the fact, that its also a laptop-card. Actually you need a graphiccard with OpenGL3.3+ (if i'm not wrong). Than you fit the minimum requirements.
I also have a laptop, 4 GB and nvidia-card. My laptop has ~20fps. But this can be increased by deactivating shadows later (this option doesnt work yet :P)
-
Do you have any plans about creating something like resources/addons/additional content system? And what with scripting? There will be possibility to write own code in eg. lua language?
Yes, the game should also serve as a platform for games written by other devs. The functionality required will evolve gradually, starting with custom model importer, a vehicle configurator and so on.
Once there are APIs for accessing the engine functionality, a scripting will come as well. Not sure what language, perhaps several. There's already the V8 Javascript engine included with the embedded Chromium; JS should be one of them. But since we are commonly using code generators, it would be easy to add API bindings for other scripting languages.

oh, where can i get opengl 3.3? i have 2.1... also, i got an idea, can you create a "walk mode" where you press a key and you can walk and sprint, etc :P
-
What graphics card have you got? OpenGL comes with graphics drivers for your card.
There's already a walking mode (on key 8), but the body isn't animated yet.
Edit: Ah, sorry, you wrote it's 3200. You need new drivers from AMD or the manufacturer of your laptop, but it's possible the one from the manufacturer won't be fresh enough.
But 3200 is really below the minimum spec though ...

Is the propeller always like this or only in certain conditions?
It is only in certain conditions. You can see the effect when turning. You can see what's happening here:

Any idea about this issue? :-\

Angrypig's looking at the issue. He is recovering from a bad flu so it's taking him a bit longer ;)

Might be, it took him down like a piglet ;D

My god if something every happened to Angry we would need to search for another Swine based coder. Not an easy task in this day and age.

[Insert funny comment that beats the previous 4 here]
Man, I've had a really really nasty head cold that's kept me down and out, sometimes in severe pain, since last Thurs, but it's finally starting to go away... I hope.

Doesn't work wathever I try, I'll be waiting for a new update!!
Thanks for helping!!!
Did you try the new version:
Finally here comes the Outerra tech demo, coming together with the alpha release of our game Anteworld.
Update: version with fixed driver version detection:
Outerra Anteworld-0.7.11.2972 (torrent, please use this if you can)
Outerra Anteworld-0.7.11.2972 (direct download)
ALSO:
@cameni: anteworld doesn't auto update ?!!!!
-
@cameni: anteworld doesn't auto update ?!!!!
It does, but the update paths are different for the full and the demo versions. Looks the demo version was only set to update to 2969 - I've corrected it now.
Demo versions should update for as long as there are critical bugs and driver detection problems; once it's stable enough only the full version will be updated regularly.
-
Now I feel more weird than before for not having bought it yet.
-
I hate Norton.... Downloaded the program, then when I was about to run it Noton has to be like "Nope.avi" and permanently remove it from my system because it hasn't been used enough by people with Norton...
-
Do yourself a favour and uninstall the useless bloatware that is norton.
-
I was on norton back in like 04.. Now I just uninstall it without asking permission on anyone's machine I use with it. I either replace it with Windows Defender or nothing. Nothing is usually good enough. It really depends on where your browsing and downloading. 97% of the people that use anti-virii programs don't need them. And 90% of the time they don't stop the virii that I end up having to remove.
-
Can't believe I didn't notice this sooner. Been so hard out working lol.
This is great, straight to the purchase for me.
-
Thats dangerous zeos. I should not count on the windows defender or nothing. Not browsing is not a protection against malware, because it just needs one affected computer in your network and you are fucked up. I'm using avg antivir and had no problems so far (especially with gaming)
But you are right - norton is too strictly. Thats just annoying.

I'm quite happy with microsoft's security essentials ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials) ) ... not disturbing, FREE ... and if you hit a shit, it will tell you ... ;-)
-
Been using VIPRE, however you do need to allow ports galore.

So long as you only go to websites you know are trusted, you never run into malware issues. Email spam would be the main concern, but that is VERY easily avoided by not opening any email that is sent unless you know the source. In the 13 years I've been online, I've only had 2 issues that could have been saved by an anti-virus program ... all others were my own stupidity for following links I should have stayed away from, and KNEW I should have stayed away from at the time.
I've been a network guy for about 9 of those years, and in tech support for about 5 of them. Every single issue I ever came across is due to human error clicking on a bad link, or downloading a file from a suspicious site (usually, a warez or torrent site).
I have to run an anti-virus program because I generally VPN to my RL work (and it's required before you VPN), but since I only have to do that rarely, I can uninstall it after I'm done. In the two or three years I've gone without AV software, I've only had one major issue ... and that was because I accidentally clicked Chrome's built in "This site is suspicious" but to allow me to go there (damn heavy trigger finger).
-
Hooray! been waiting for this day for so long
I've send this to a friend who put it onto his 100Mbit Seedbox, that should help with the downloading!

It has been shown to log messages at the top of the screen. How do I remove them?

Please attach your eng.log here.

Thanks. Here it is.
By the way, the Cessna 172 can be controlled with a joystick? I have also a ruder pedals and throttle. Can I use them?
-
Yes, you can map the joysticks to controls in the configuration menu.
-
Seems to be an issue with USB devices. Could you get the usbdeview utility from here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html) (download link at the end), and run it in command line:
usbdeview.exe /stab usb.txt
and send me the usb.txt file?

Yes, you can use any joystick pedals or wheel you want. I have a thrustmaster and G27 Wheel and a gamepad all in use in OT.

I notice all close up trees are still sprites atm, is this normal? Is there plans to implement close up higher polygon trees etc?
Maybe I have a setting wrong as I remember videos showing more detailed trees.

INSOMNIA_MODE = ENGAGED
Holy sh!t, finally!
DLing straight away, even if it may not run.
Hey - we will see how it goes.
MAYBE it will work. Maybe not.
If it will, then I shall visit goddamn Poland, then Russia - will keep me for a while.
-
Hello, just a little message :)
I've juste bought the game, will test it tomorrow.
Anyway seems like there is a fun team working on it :D
-
Yep getting my mind around it, finally figured out most controls.
Just wondering if you guys could add in current Lat/Long down bottom left corner for reference in a future patch, (actually I found tab brings info up nicely, however once I managed to glitch it and it stopped producing coords, I think perhaps its due to me going into space then back down again?).
I was also looking at the object files and wondering if we'll be able to just drop in our own objects etc sometime to try out new things, i.e. wondering how hard it be to toss in a tank for example. I don't mind coding :)
Additionally if you guys have someone in GIS (I have experience with it from university) then you can use allot of GIS data for imprinting land-types and features into your worldengine; for example tree region types are easily identified with GIS tools such as Esri Arc Tools etc... You can even complete entire accurate road maps with ease, instead of needing manual input.
You can get access to the basic ArcGIS programs and datasets for around ~$3000 (for commercial use). I am sure you guys are already fully aware of all the above, just checking.

Ok, my usb hub is the problem. When I took it off, the messages stopped. I have three usb devices connected to my PC: a usb printer, a usb rudder pedal and a usb hub. Connected to the usb hub (a four ports model) I have a usb joystick and a 'throttle/spoiler/flaps' usb console.
I'm sending the requested log.
Thanks.
-
@ GIS
There are many alternatives to ArcGIS ... the most I love is quantum GIS. It works very well with the datasets of openstreetmap and ist regulary updated. I used it partly at work and it was very comfortable.
Also some GIS-Tools could find their way into Outerra. For example a polygon-tool which defines the area of a forest. At least the user has to click and define the type of forrest.
Or a paint-tool where you can draw simply the texture (sand, concrete etc.) to your landscape.
-
Can't wait to try this! Looking great. Sure hope this can be turned into a flight/train/ship/car simulator sometime.
-
How do i fly? With the plane no matter what buttons i press it just wont start moving. The engine is turned on. With the helicopter i just turn upside down and crash into the ground
-
I believe PGUP and PGDN are throttle. Says so in controls menu.
-
Awesome! Just bought it and love it to bits already!
I have a G940 logitech joystick/pedals/throttle system and am having trouble getting the collective to respond - especially trying to land it seems to float around ~~
Anyway, I expect this to be a transient issue as this program is expanded so Im not too worried - Im using FreeTrack on the mouse x and y axis to look around in cockpit -
Congrats on the release and I look forward to the path ahead!
-
I finally bought Anteworld. I believe i can fly... but i can't :( Is there any tutorial how to start? :P
Edit:
I restarted game and now it works, and i can fly with my joystick :)
-
It's possible to change the FOV ? It's really too narrow, especially when we are near the ground.
-
Not yet, will be adding it to the config. For some it's narrow, for others wide :)
-
Hi! The issue I had is now fixed. I think the update did the job. Now the joystick is not working (actually never did). The usb.txt is attached. Thanks!
-
Could you also attach your eng.log?
-
Could you also attach your eng.log?
There you go!

So, does it mean that when you go into the input configuration, and you click on a control and move the joystick axis, nothing happens? Is it not being detected?
-

Nothing happens at all. It's like is doesn't even exists... I'm using it with Flight Simulator so it's 100% sure that the joystick is working...
-
Hmm, looks there may be a problem with usb hubs .. could you test it directly (temporarily)?
-

Yes, it's going directly to the back of the computer, I haven't got any usb hubs... Quite weird isn't it? ???
-
Hmm something is with the detection then. Do you have "devs" directory created in the data folder? (D:\Documents and Settings\Julio\Outerra\ according to the eng.log)
If yes, try to delete it and run it again.

Hi, I just downloaded the Tech Demo, very excited to try this. Unfortunately I get an error.
The download installed ok, I select demo mode & it downloads an update.
Then when it tries to restart I get the following error.
"This application failed to start because dwmapi.dll was not found"
I am using XP Pro 64. Since this .dll is a vista dll I assume the tech demo will not run under XP64? I didn't see any OS specified in the requirements.
My system..
XP Pro 64
AMD Phenom II x 6 core
nvidia 8800 GTX
8GB Ram

There was a bug in recent update (2989) that causes this error. We tried to fix it on 2990 but apparently it still doesn't work on some Windows versions. Will make another patch in a few minutes ...

wow brilliant, that was a fast reply! :)
I look forward to trying it out later,
thanks

How long can I play this demo? Is there an date that the demo will stop or can I play forever?
-
Forever.

Its more fun if you pay for access to all the other stuff too. And on top of that we can get angrypig working around the clock ;D
The more money Outerra team gets the more they can flick off their boring day-jobs.. all good I say 8)

Here's the patch that fixes the issue with outerra.exe not starting on Windows XP:

With the latest update my joystick has been recognised and the shadow issue I had in the propeller has gone. So happy now! ;D thank you guys!

Hi, Just wondering if or how to import flightgear aircraft (running JBSim) into the game, can this option be made up if not already possible??
Would be great imo.
Also, how do I delete unwanted vehicle spawns that I have screwed up by crashing/ putting the vehicle into an unusable state ie. Heli upside down underground.
Would be good to be able to delete them.
Ben
-
It should be possible to import them once the importer is released, provided the models are in Collada format.
It's not possible to delete the vehicles at the moment, but you can get the heli/plane back to usable state by pressing ~ key, and setting altitude/speed/heading there.
-
It's possible to use the "walk" mode in the demo ? I see the keyboard shortcut (jump, forward, etc...), but I can't find where activate it.

It's key 8 for a fixated guy :)

If you purchased the beta you can press "8" to spawn inside a rough humanoid model and walk around in the "advanced jumping simulator" if you didn't pay I am afraid your stuck with only the ability to fly like a superhero. ;(

And - excuse me - for just 15 $ it's a gift for the whole excellent stuff! :)
-
This is insane and absolutely amazing, my brain is exploding, there are so many possibilities with this. Keep it up, one day a great game will be made out of this :)
-
Wow, just wow. I can't believe my eyes and ears. Absolutely fantastic work you guys are doing here.
I downloaded the demo, gave it a spin and it worked no problems. I immediately paid the $15, to help support your efforts.
I'd love to see a game come of this tech.

Did you make any progress getting the ISS to show as a vehicle rather than an object?
-
Did you make any progress getting the ISS to show as a vehicle rather than an object?
Yes, the ISS is mapped on 2 as "dynamic" object in the latest version.
-
Thanks just saw that in the latest patch notes.
-
Certainly a cool engine and concept. However, it is odd to read that a perk of spending $15 on the unfinished game is, "You will also become our beta-testers, with ability to influence the priorities of the development." I.e., In exchange for paying the company, you get to work for the company. An interesting theory of labor that makes slavery look like a bargain.

It's the Indy Development Model, and no different than Minecraft.
-
I know where you're coming from with that, but I would say it's certainly not like that and not meant to be like that. I forget exactly which indie game it was that made it kind of sound a bit iffy at least with their advertisment about it. Was it Blacklight Retribution or something like that? I can't remember right now.
What this is is more like Minecraft's alpha/beta development, but with more user/fan input including just suggestions. These 2 guys can't do something of this scale completely on their own. Also, there are many many people out there who love doing stuff like this - sims, 3D modeling, vehicle physics, etc - for a hobby. Hell that's how Outerra started out isn't it? You know people actually find game development fun? Games wouldn't exist if nobody did.

Yeah, thats right!
And nobody it's forcet to pay that 15 bucks! ::)
However, some people they want all that stuff, but pay? No thanks!
Those who feel just like a beta tester, so this must be their problem. Myself, i feel like a explorer! 8)
-
I should probably remove that statement about beta testers that sounds like a feature. It comes from times of closed beta when everyone asked to become beta testers, so we said that soon everyone can become a beta tester. But for newcomers who don't know this, it may sound strange indeed :)
-
The statement is correct, cameni. We are preordering an unfinished game, and so we become testers, don't we ? We find bugs and glitches and help the developing.
-
Yes, but for some it apparently sounds like an obligation :)
-
For me it sounds like being part of the developing team. What honor !!
-
Not sure who to try and reach or how to do it.
I did the initial download and started it up. I got a screen asking me to buy the Beta program. I paid my $15.00 but have nothing to show for it. When I click on the exe to start the game, all I get is a full screen shot of an airport in the Alps. My mouse turns into a controller and the only thing it will do is pan around to look at the scenery. I have no cursor or any spots on the screen to do anything with. There is no way to even shut it down. I have to go to Task Mgr to shut it down. Also there does not seem to be a place anywhere on the Forum pages for me to post a new string. All I can do is reply. I must be missing something, but can't find a place to download anything more. Can someone help?
Thanks.
-
The support forum where you can post topics is here (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0), this here is a news forum where normal members don't have the privileges to post.
You didn't have to pay to try the demo, there's a big DEMO MODE button in the lower right corner when you start the program.
Once you get in the game, you are in UFO mode where you can move with WASD keys. When you press ESC, a sandbox mode opens and mouse appears. You can quit from there easily, but you can also do many other things. Please read the help that is available via the sandbox menu or directly on F1.
-
OK. Thanks for your help. I will try that.

For me it sounds like being part of the developing team. What honor !!

I beg apologies if this was already posted, but is there any advantage running Outerra on Windows 7 64 bits instead of Windows XP 32 bits?
-
Not much yet, but it's expected Outerra will become 64-bit program in the future, to fully utilize available memory and speedup the 64bit architecture provides.
-
Probably not the public forums. Seen http://www.outerra.com/wcontact.html (http://www.outerra.com/wcontact.html) yet? :)
-
Why not here ^^ Certainly Cameni read this and contacted him yet ;)
-
Hi everybody,
I'm a new happy supporter of this impressive project. I'm sure public success will follow soon.
As far as the content:
- looks are gorgeous, I'm surprised how well it runs on my average system;
- flight and car physics are nice at start but i believe they're only the beginning;
My questions would be:
- can the game host higher sofistication physics models and exponentially more objects, meaning are there more resources left for a pc to handle?
- what is the development plan for the planet? you will provide regular extra content or it will be left exclusively for modders?
Thanhs and good luck.
-
Q1. Yes.. Within Reason
Q2. For the Anteworld game some pre-existing structures and roadways (Completely in ruins) are planned to still exist.
Also I like you name. Them dirty Outerans taking everyone's job.. TERK MA JERB!!
-
Really like what you guys are doing here keep up the awesome work.
Quick question, is there any other payment method other than Paypal planned soon? I'd love to purchase for $15 but I don't use Paypal.
Thanks
-
You can use credit/debet cards there without having a PayPal account.
-
You can use credit/debet cards there without having a PayPal account.
As the great Homer Simpson would say D'Oh ! Never spotted it, thanks I'm got it sussed now.
-
lol
-
just got done perusing through the demo. I have to say I am thoroughly impressed! great work! cant wait for more.
-
Hi guys! I tried the demo and purchased the alpha without any doubts. Since that I am flying over the globe, and it is awesome. But... ;D
- I dont find the Palm Tree Islands of Dubai.(but both are on the "g" map) Are the natural islands possible in Outerra only?
- I tried to save a location named "Pic du Midi d'Ossau" (which is a hill in the Pyrennes). I get an error message (I don't remember the exact line but in the end it says "unexpected identifier") I restart the game but all my previously saved locations are gone. I go to the campos/earth directory, and find all the .cam files, the defaults and mines too. Then I delete the last saved cam (the Midi d'Ossau) and the game recognizes the files again.
The problem is the ' characther. If I save a location with that, the game gives the error message, and don't find the cam files.
These two things are not big problems, but good to know, I think.
So, I want to say thank you for your work, and I eagerly wait the rivers and lakes, and the model importer, and the weather, and... ;)
-
The palm trees were a mod by the guy who made the screenshot.
-
I think some misunderstanding here... ;)
I meant this : http://www.forensicgenealogy.info/contest_293_results.html (http://www.forensicgenealogy.info/contest_293_results.html)
-
Oh ha. Sorry. I skimmed through what you wrote and missed the Dubai part. I know what they are. :P
-
Only the very large manmade structures (Hoover Dam, The Great Pyramids of Egypt) etc, will show up in the terrain data, and even then they're very rough. Man-made islands would have to be input by hand, I believe. Also, by the timeline of the Anteworld game, most of these structures would have been washed away by neglect.
-
By the way, what is the most appropriate modeling tool to be used in Outerra, Blender (freeware) or 3ds Max (payware)? Is there any problem in modeling and exporting using one and importing into the other one and vice-versa (from .dae to .3ds and vice-versa)?
-
Why there should be restrictions to that? The used format of the models is collada. So you can use each tool which is abled to export to that format. I'm using blender and the OT-Team had no problem with integrating these models (check the japanese buildings). I'm not sure but i think the Tatra-Truck was made in 3DS.
There should be no problems. Just export your models to collada. Thats all.
-
Thanks for the reply. My intention is to use the product that will be most used by the future developer community for Outerra. I'm currently modeling in gmax for FS9 and I will need learn another one, but which one?
-
Why you have to? Gmax has an collada-exporter surely. I can give you some notes about blender
+ speed of development is really high
+ you will get each new feature by downloading a new version (download + unzip, no need of an installer)
+ no pay
+ blender has nearly the same possibilities like 3ds
-> Modeling, Animation, Post Processing, Motion Tracking, Sculpting, Texturing, Image Painting, ...
+ no restrictions in rendersizes
+ many supported formats -> every image format, h264, mpg, avi, ...
+ support for various architectures
+ many tutorials
- for beginners the interface is horrorful, but after understanding the concept its aweful (better then 3ds in my opinion)
- you have to understand model topology for making clean models, in 3ds dont need to
because of the fact that i'm a blenderian, i find more pros then cons. There are more reasons for using or not using it. Its your part to give it a try.
-
Ok, you convinced me. I'll invest in learning Blender. Thank you for your attention and tips.
Let me show you what I consider the best of my works for FS9, the city of music. The project still under construction can be enjoyed on this link http://www.arcspace.com/architects/portzamparc/cidade/cidade.htm (http://www.arcspace.com/architects/portzamparc/cidade/cidade.htm)

I have a problem. Outerra was working fine and then it updated recently.
Ever since that when i try to run Outerra the process appears in task manager, then disappears after about a second or two. It doesn't run at all and I've tried uninstalling and re installing it.
Here's my eng.log if it helps.
-
Your eng.cfg got corrupted for some reason - please delete it, it will be recreated from defaults.
-
Yes that worked, thanks Cameni. Keep up the good work!
-
This looks like an awsome program.
Anyplace where a noob like me can go to learn about it? I DLed the demo, ands its some what confuzing.(is it worth buying?)
-
Yes its worth buying, but them im a fanboi with outerra :) If you wanna fly around the place then a purhcase gets you the cessna / apache and lots of groovy updates in the future including a model importer which is where the fun is really gonna start imo.
-
Yeah, the $15 bucks is worth it if you want to have a bit more "eye-candy" experience flying the Cessna at the locations of your choice, rather than UFO mode. Plus you'll get the updates free-of-charge.
Think of it as Minecraft in the early days, and what it has become now. Outerra will far outpace Minecraft as far as visual and gameplay elements, so it'll be well worth the investment. Not to mention, eventually you'll be able to import your own models, and/or setup your own sims with it, alongside the Anteworld game itself.
The demo in and of itself is great, and will allow you to see what the engine has to offer, so even if you don't buy, you're experiencing a lot. But for the price of a nightly dinner at a local restaurant, I think it's worth it to pay the $15 ;)
-
With this 15$ bucks you pay probably the gift wrap but never the content! The conten you can't pay! It's to precious! :P
-
Just popping in to say I have the demo hosted on a seedbox/fast server (500mb/s up). So torrents can be potentially be the fastest source to get them now. I've only got a 6.0 ratio, so not a whole lot of people are using the torrents.
I'm a developer too and working towards my own procedurally generated demo/game. Not on this scale, but still interesting to check out.
-
Guess its time to scrach up all my online money and buy it then...
EDIT: I tryed to buy it, but it didnt work. to the support board!

Damn.. Just missed my chance to strike!
-
Damnit! Missed my opportunity to exercise my banhammer! I do this for a living, people! Give me a chance to show yuze mah skillz!
-
Really impressed with this, very fun vehicle(s) modes - has some joystick support too, was using the Logitech to fly the Apache and Cessna - Awesome! And thanks for all the hard work!
-
Damn.. Just missed my chance to strike!
Game over! Return to beginning! :P ;D
-
Some evenings I can not отарваться, this best, that I saw in the schedule of creation of the world. A question to developers, whether there will be clouds???
-
there will climatic data, so i guess there will be also clouds.. of course there will. They are building a world generator. A world without clouds is not really a world generator ;)
-
Well worth the money. I'm looking forward to the progress in the future!
Perhaps I've missed something but in the future will the ground textures depend on the area? Ie in the Grand Canyon the colors will be more red, the forests will be more green, etc..
-
I believe so eventually, yes, though I don't know if it will be just a grass texture color change at first (very red grass :P) or if there will be better changes.
-
After the experience, I have to say: Overall, this engine is an epoch-making is the level of progress of human design! Without Borders in the future expectations!
At the same time, I do not quite understand, simple to say the concern is that the Fresnel design eventually be able to complete?
Specifically related to the two small problems:
1) Since we can see the sun on the glass in the AH-64 mapping and environmental reflex (SLR) sphere contour. Why, then, to see less than a real-time environment mapping? Similarly, C-172 fuselage paint surface of this phenomenon. Because the finish is> 0 degrees of 3D objects for real-time environment mapping. To solve this problem, then the backlight shadows on objects (including people) the lack of environmental refraction (objects) will also solve.
2) worry about the performance of the "cloud". Also exists between the cloud and mutual refraction, and the different thickness of the cloud transmittance. At present, the "cloud" also do not see under the premise of worry is normal.
In short, I think, in this atmospheric dust has been such a perfect performance engine in front, these two small problems, eventually should be able to get the perfect solution.
The ideas are just ideas. In the end whether the final perfect solution? Still need the engine designer to answer.
------------------------------------
Tiež existuje medzi mrakom a vzájomnej lomu a rôzne hrúbke oblačnosti prestupu. V súčasnej dobe, "cloud" tiež nie sú vidieť pod podmienkou starostí je normálne.
Stručne povedané, myslím, v tomto atmosférického prachu bol taký dokonalý výkon motora v prednej časti, tieto dve malé problémy, by mala nakoniec byť schopní získať perfektné riešenie.
Tieto myšlienky sú len nápady. V závere, či je konečný ideálne riešenie? Stále potrebujú motora návrhára odpovedať.
------------------------------------
-
Please just use English :) While our native language is indeed Slovak, that automatic translation is utter mess. I wouldn't be able to comprehend what it was about :D
1) The reflection of the sun on the glass is not because of the environment mapping, it's the result of atmospheric scattering computation done on the reflected light ray. Environment mapping will come in later versions.
2) Clouds will be modeled to approximate the correct physical appearance. We are always using feasible approximations to physical phenomena, otherwise it would be very hard to get the rendering working properly globally.
-
Understand. :D
Thank you cameni genius design! We have more worth looking forward to this vibrant atmosphere engine!
-
Reflection is also tantamount to a 180-degree mapping. ;) Mapping definition is obviously more widely. This phenomenon is how to name, does not matter for me.I just had a premonition that this engine will be after a period away from the real "heaven", the most recent!Of course, if the small vegetation to achieve 3D, the trees can also be realistic shadows, leaves can also be mapped weak ambient light, as well as trees and grass can reflect the local meteorological data or artificial air (helicopter downdraft) data is even more ideal!
Once again pay tribute to as much as possible to create a real sense of design guru!
-----------------------------------------------------

Hi, I have a question. On the computer I've installed it, now I dont have internet. When I start the software, it checks whether this update to the latest version, and apparently, get stuck and not progressing.
Do I have a chance to try Outerra without internet? please am waiting for this a long time and now I can not even try. :((((((
Thanks :)
-
Hope I put this in the right place, I've been tracking Outerra from the shadows for quite some time now (must be going on 2 - 3 years) and I just have to say I'm loving the tech demo of Anteworld, the idea, back story and and general feel will be absolutely amazing, and could compete with aspects of Second Life.... or completely blow it to pieces in terms of freedom/graphics. I bought Anteworld and will also be willing to donate further to the project at a future date. How the entire planets terrain fits into such a small space is amazing.
I do have a few small criticisms, the first being you need a moon sprite, at night I noticed there was no moon... or moon light and it is pitch black. This may be impossible to achieve but to have a 3D moon would be killer, although that may be beyond current technical limitations with the detail being put into the planet. The other is the lack of vegetation, loose rock formations, shrubbery, sticks, logs, leaves, plants, long grass and the usual stuff seen around, although I guess this is or will be worked on.
I can grantee I'd be on Anteworld (the multiplayer game as single player may be a little lonely :( ) all the time, and support it's development and creation.
Sorry if its hard to understand English isn't my primary language :)
-
More plants and things are being worked on and someday I think they'll get to the moon. A 3D moon that is. This engine can do it and hopefully it will be a lot easier to make than the Earth. :P
I don't think this belongs in the support topic, but unfortunately, I can't move it.
Your English is very good by the way. I don't think I really saw anything wrong with it, but I'm not going to go giving it red correction marks. I'm no English major. ;D
-
Um, there are several places where it needs the net. It checks for the updates, then for updated data .. will need to test it.
-
Just three days, upgraded twice. The surface undulating design is very successful!
Obviously, this is not the experience the object of Fresnel effect when. Map includes not only the vision mirror map, and also closer objects, and each other with the color influence of refraction! These future effects sphere reflected light (high light) has been achieved and the contours of ambient light (the color of the sky during the day) together, the exact representation of the letter is complete Fresnel system design.
I firmly believe that the final design, because you have to create a real engine of heaven into the earth! This is unprecedented. , Covers all other outstanding local performance engine, it may just need to constantly improve the design time, as well as the determination of the designer. Of course, also exists another possible: At present, the recommended configuration to run smoothly, is caused because the other elements necessary to simplify or omit. Wait until the other elements must all join the visual effects are entirely correct, perfectly balanced.Including of course the trees to achieve a 3D polyhedron. The recommended configuration is completely unable to run. I personally think that this may still exist. Therefore, the,I estimate that about two years later, just my computer need to reconfigure.
------------------------------------

Coasts aren't implemented yet. So that's why it's a beach on anteworld.
-
Not implemented coastlines, that would make the coast shape slightly different. The elevation data should be there, looks it's a slightly different position.
-
Hello! Finally I got alpha version and tested it a little bit.
Great job, I just LOVE the concept of Outerra. But I have a question about the accuracy of height map in Outerra. Ok, coasts aren't implemented at all, but what about other places?
Some terrain don’t seem to be very exact and detailed if compare Outerra with Google Earth. For example, I found that often canyons/mountains are not as detailed as in Google Earth. Like Outerra makes mountains and cliffs less steep, and canyons less deep (some pits and ravines are not shown at all).
A small example on Tenerife Island (Spain):
1.
Google:
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/5921/1g1e.jpg (http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/5921/1g1e.jpg)
Outerra:
http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5912/2o1j.jpg (http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5912/2o1j.jpg)
2.
Google:
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5168/3g2l.jpg (http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/5168/3g2l.jpg)
Outerra:
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6619/4o2cr.jpg (http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/6619/4o2cr.jpg)
I got a random point (28°20'28.4"N 16°36'27.1"W) on the bottom of small canyon. The height shown in Google Earth is 1462-1463 meters and in Outerra its about 1491 m – 30 meters higher! It means that the canyon in Outerra was twice less deep as in reality:
3.
Google:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/631/5g3e.jpg (http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/631/5g3e.jpg)
Outerra:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6448/6o3r.jpg (http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6448/6o3r.jpg)
The borders in Google Earth seem to be quite steep, about 45 degrees. In Outerra it’s more gently sloping, about 20-30 degrees.
The heights of the edges of that ravine were pretty close to the real – 1504-1512m vs 1515-1516 in Google Earth:
points
Google (edges and central bottom, heights and coordinates shown):
http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/9473/pointsk.jpg (http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/9473/pointsk.jpg)
Outerra (the same coordinates):
Left edge:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5953/7o4q.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/5953/7o4q.jpg)
central (bottom):
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/4356/8o6p.jpg (http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/4356/8o6p.jpg)
right edge:
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3896/8o5k.jpg (http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/3896/8o5k.jpg)
Only the bottom point is too high in Outerra (1491 vs 1462 in Google Earth).
That is why the ravine doesn’t seem as deep as in reality, and all terrain in Outerra seems to be smoother, less detailed. I noticed it not only on Tenerife, but in other points of Earth too.
Maybe I did something wrong (I used free version) and I should download more detailed height map? What is the source of your heightmap? I guess it should be huge amount of data. For example if you save the height for each square meter and use 2 bytes for each height (2 bytes will be enough for 1/3 meter precision - 65 536 steps = 21.8 km, enough for describing height from the Mariana Trench -11km to Mount Everest 8.8km) it will need 4 Gigabyte for only relatively small Tenerife island.. And about 1000 Terabyte for whole Earth! O_O
Perhaps you will make like In addons/mods “ORBX/FTX terrain” for Microsoft Flight Simulator? When somebody needs extremely detailed terrain he just download some gigabytes of accurate height maps for his city/island/state and enjoy playing there?
I think it can be done automatically using Google Earth data (which is quite precise) or some other sources (your own server with 1000 Tb of storage for example :)).
-
There are many things that affect it.
- for example, you are comparing image data with elevation data. Image data have much higher resolution, if Google used just the available elevation data to shade the terrain, i would be even worse than in OT.
- there's no self-shadowing of terrain in OT yet, without it the ridges don't look as deep
- we are using global dataset with 90m resolution. There are better sources (30m or even better) but there's no good global 30m source yet (ASTER still needs a few more passes to cancel out the noise). A better dataset can be produced but we didn't attempt to push it for this demo version. Of course the storage and server bandwidth plays its role as well :)
- lack of land class variety contributes to it as well ...
-
I wouldn't pick on the detail level seeing how the Antarctica is free of ice and the mainland China is glaciated ;)
this is Earth in some remote unspecified future; so close enough is good enough in my book heheh
-
Is the 30m dataset something you hope to support and include Cameni? (I'm not even sure when those passes will be done so please excuse my ignorance).
-
Probably not for Anteworld, no need in there, but for a simulator we would like to.
-
No need?! :'( :'( :'( I'm needy...
-
There are other areas that need attention *before* we can start considering how hilly it looks. Vegetation, biomes, etc.
Also, because of the bilinear filtering that's currently being used when remapping lat/lon aligned data to OT's projection, we are not even fully using the resolution of the 90m dataset.
-
"for example, you are comparing image data with elevation data. Image data have much higher resolution"
If you move mouse cursor in Google Earth in the bottom of the screen you can see current altitude, it changes every 1 meter (!), really impressive resolution. And it doesn’t change like from one point to another constantly rising or descending during 30m or 90m. It can be like this:
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6694/gevaluation.jpg (http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6694/gevaluation.jpg)
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2700/gevaluation2.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2700/gevaluation2.jpg)
They made very detailed model of a small canyon.
It seems that sometimes resolution of Google Earth elevation data can be about 10m grid– very accurate source. I think if they used only 90m data (SRTM), the terrains would look very gentle, smooth, without so many details. But you can see – changing of altitude every 5-10 meters or even more frequently!
Google Earth has tool called “Elevation profile”:
http://support.google.com/earth/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=181393 (http://support.google.com/earth/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=181393)
Maybe it's possible to write some automatic 'grabber' that can grab Google Earth elevation data? I guess it will not be illegal :)
" better dataset can be produced but we didn't attempt to push it for this demo version."
Anyways it's great software with huge potential! I hope in future there will be big community making free (or not free) mods and high resolution datasets, available for downloading for some specific regions :) Please provide the possibility for such enthusiastic modding (something like ‘file -> open -> add elevation data’) :)
-
Hey Cameni, I have been watching this project with great interest for a long time now and when I saw you had an alpha out I had to jump on board immediately. Very impressed so far, and its getting much improved with each update. I was just wondering if you had considered using a much simplified erosion algorithm (like what you find in traditional fractal engines) to take care of the lack of heightmap data. It seems to me that it would perfectly suit the post human world your going for. Also data could be extracted from this process to find the locations of land erosion and rivers to further detail the world.
My experience only comes from using tools like World Machine, but I know its possible. I just have no idea if it could be adapted to work in real-time given your rendering budget.
-
I've been actually thinking multiple times about using some sort of simplified erosion to enhance the quality of terrain data, whether during the terrain data preparation phase or in run time. There are limitations, but I have a few tests in mind that I want to run to see if it's going to be possible.

This sounds really interesting, it would be very good to see a blog post on this if you get any further with it.
-
A friend just showed me this and I must say it looks very impressive, downloading the alpha as I type.
The EU download link says Link Invalid (getting it from the usa link).
Perhaps I'm dreaming, but does anteworld allow for adding in new planets etc and if so is it seriously true that it's only going to be $30 to buy? :o
Or do we have to get the actual engine for such modifications.
Just wondered if there was any network code being built in to either of them :)
-
Anteworld is just a game on the Outerra engine, taking place on Earth. But we plan also a planet creator based on OT where it will be possible to create new planets.
No networking yet, but will be added.
-
Yes I saw more information on the splash screens of the download which answered alot of what I asked for me (but you replied before I could edit my post ;)).
Very impressive tech demo, curious as to how much the planet creator etc would be (though I'm guessing you haven't been considering that because of all the work you've been doing on the engine alone), thinking along the lines of a sci-fi mmo :)
-
...thinking along the lines of a sci-fi mmo :)
Such a thing running on this engine would be mind-blowing. Just think of a more realistic version of Spore, except an MMO.
BRB, brain melting...
-
I can honestly and wholeheartedly say that I can see Outerra becoming a very very big engine in the future, and possibly being used by some major companies. Nothing like this with this level of detail has ever been done before. The worry I have though is the lack of 3D trees and being able to place many 3D objects onto planet (for example many highly detailed 3d cities)

Insane, Outerra worthy Procedurally generated random trees are coming.
-
Yay, I'm really impressed. :D
I hope that tree generator will be able to create any tree that exists in real world. Or maybe even bushes? ;)
Btw. will it be possible to create own tree and place it manually or create own tree, mark the area and generate many trees in this area?
Also very usefull would be tools to manually edit terrain height etc.
-
Do the trees collide now? (I noticed in the tech demo you could drive through them)
-

I agree, it would be really nice and useful feature.

Nice to see some 3D trees Zeos! Nice job!!

not yet. The procedural trees can and will however. Just have to make sure a heavy enough vehicle can down them if they are small or if the truck is heavy!

Hi guys. I am new here but i love your work (thats why I bought the Alpha). My question is. When we can expect 3d trees in tech demo?

Looking good so far.
@mauser Probably, because its a great feture and you want your demo to look as good as the game. just want enough push to get peoples moneyz XD

Definately interested to know when these trees can be added to the demo

Thanks for the explanation.

Any idea when/how long until the model importer will be out?
-
Those trees...
Holy balls.
My new PC (that FOR SURE will run Anteworld!) is only a few days away...
I simply can't wait.
Images of tactical MMO milsims are already flying through my head like crazy...
WHERE IS MY AK-12!?

Very nice trees indeed!
Will you add some wind animation? Like here:

Myabe this video will be useful too:
Physically Based Real-Time Translucency for Leaves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGqKc5UzPwE#)
and I love this 3D grass:
Real-Time Grass Rendering (Part 3) - HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGwiHTKcrUc#ws)
I'd like to see something like this in future releases of Outerra engine :)
-
Those are actually really cool videos. Probably the only way you could do that is with procedural trees also. Would be cool!
-
Those 3d tree videos are really awesome, would be killer to have something like that in Outerra
-
Can't repeat how nice Anteworld already is, but the potential is so high and possible paths for development so many, that it seems imposible to be able to meet everybody's expectations on how should it look when finished.
To add to this my own hopes :P, I think that TheHunter game does an outstanding job in creating natural environment. Although I sense that the development approach is radically different between the two, being able to generate a similar feel on the large scale of Anteworld, would be amazing.
Besides the 3D trees and grass, I think adding rivers and lakes is at least as needed.

Like if the thing wasn't epic enough. :D
Looking forward to those procedural trees!
Especially that I have a brand new PC that FOR SURE will run Anteworld/Outerra.
Hey, it runs Skyrim on Ultra-High like a boss, so how much of a problem would Anteworld cause it?
(it's not ATI graphics card)
-
I've been following this for awhile now and have just downloaded the demo. Quite impressed, it actually works on my year old entry level laptop, though only at about 2 fps. No graphical errors or crashing.
For reference:
Windows 7
AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core QL-64
ATI Radeon HD 3200
4GB Memory

Has 20 days there is no upgrade version release.

Patience, these guys are working hard i'm sure. You try programming the world, then having everything in it interacting with each of its elements; whoever made the earth never gave anybody the instructions. These guys are making the instructions. :-)
-

I think you should take into account that everything on what are now working Outerra devs isn't small piece of work: tree generator, biomes, rivers/lakes, everything of it takes a lot of time to complete, so we need to have a lot of patience. ;)
-
Call me stupid but I don't know how to start it. I installed the demo now how do i start it? Please help
-
Start -> All programs -> Outerra -> Anteworld

new user here
(i'm a flighsim fan, i have x-plane 10, il-2 cod and DCS A-10 as well played many others also i like Armed Assault II and Skyrim)
well, i just downloaded this demo and i was very impressed how smooth and flawless the generated terrain is .. (except some minor terrain preloading glitches)
my N680GTX was literary eating the graphics and was asking for more details :D
this thing has a HUUGE potential and i'm definitely buying it
thanks !
ps: if only we could have the same in xplane and il-2 cod .. sniffle but that's a whole different story :'(
-
I've watched videos and screens. I've been totally shocked on how amazing it is. really megajob!
when I run anteworld on my GeForce 8500 GT (with the newest drivers) strange things had happened.
1. you can move camera underground and see backside of the meshes. it's ok. but when you move camera above the ground, it doesn't comes back to render frontside of meshes.
2. when you move camera to the outer space, you can see the whole planet covered with snow, although it was green at the start point near the ground. then, when you try to move camera from space back to the ground, it moves, moves, moves and then bang! - stops, although it's still some kilometers above the ground. when you continue to move to the ground, suddenly things described in 1) occur.
3. when I tried to change screen resolution, the app just broken down.
of course, I need to upgrade my graphic card, but if it's needed, I can post some screens.
i didn't found any info on the site about price. just in some previous post I saw that it's just $15. is it true? in anteworld it's an option: 'create account'. yes, I've seen it. but what will I get after buying? some new facilities in anteworld? outerra library? sources? or both? finally, I'd like to know if outerra would be available on linux.
I totally agree with verhext: using this engine in flight simulators would be just new BIG word in aviasim design. I'm incurable fan of il-2 and I'm interested in creating an alternative to it, cause il-2 is a dying thing, has ugly architecture and hasn't lots of interesting things for real collaborative playing.
and the last thing: is it possible to become co-developer for someone?
Looking forward to answers! Thanks!
-
Yes it costs 15 $ you get access to buildings, vehicles (plane and helicopter) and you become a beta supporter of the game.
They said there will probably be a linux version of it.

This, and with the 15$ you are basically buying the pre-alpha version of the game "Anteworld", including its updates to the final version and the final version, which will be developed in order to mature the OT engine and its tools.
-
Honestly, I don't have enough time to play games, especially such huge-scaled :) I'm interested in the graphics engine, because creating another version of such engine (for example, base on OGRE) will be like inventing another bicycle and rather boring :)
-
How does one buy the alpha(I'm a Linux user, so I can't play it)?
-
Same for me. As soon as there is a linux version I will buy it.
(And Linux users are known as a well paying bunch, as the Humble Bundle sales taught us all).

Yea and what about getting LINUX ? It was free. Windows is not: the Humble Bundle sales don't mean anything.

Sorry, but I don't get your point.
-
We would surely like to have Linux/Mac version as soon as possible, but at the moment our available resources are limited and diversifying it even more would not be reasonable at this point. But it's definitely in the plan, and I guess Linux version will have its own pre-alpha reduced price period as well.

Choice of Linux is hardly about the money.

Great to hear that! I actually have a windows machine, but that is only for work. All private stuff is running Linux. Anyway, I will keep my eyes peeled :)
-
Hey i was wondering if you could give us some news when we can expect a game or at least an alpha where we can finally play online? I mean i paid money for the demo but we dont know when the game and everything is coming out. Im not trying to rush you guys or anything just some news about it would be nice. The anteworld site says almost there ever since the demo release. So as i said some news about it would be appreciated.
Thanks
-
Development of this nature is an iterative process. It will be more like the development of Minecraft (incremental content patches) than the release of a feature complete game, I suspect.
Just be patient and enjoy being able to watch the development process in (almost) real time IMHO. :)

As as said im not trying to get them to rush it i just want a bit of news about it because its been mostly quiet
-
Oh, the "Almost there" was meant for the demo/alpha release really. I didn't have time to prepare content for the site, and because there's no specific game content yet, it wasn't updated yet. I should put something else there, along with the link on the demo.
There's still a lot of stuff to do on the engine side, that will take a considerable chunk of our time in coming months, but with the new importer and the model support we are also going to start adding game content as well. But, what aspect of "playing online" do you mean? A multiplayer support for driving/exploring?

Ah i see thanks for the quick reply. What i mean by playing online is well anything on this engine really because its amazing and i really want to try it with others.
-
Be patient, it's a lot of work trying to design the earth to scale in such detail, Keep on eye on the development screenshots forum section there's always new stuff in there. It would be nice to get just a tiny bit more news from time to time with in-progress screenshots but it's always nice to get more lol

About the trees, is it possible to generate the branches as thick curvy lines instead triangles? The branches would be more curvy this way and the performance cost for trees would be less?
-
Curves mean a lot more triangles.
-
I didn't mean 3D curves
-
3D curves or 2D curves it doesn't matter, in all cases they are slower than triangles and that is not the only problem of such approach...
-
Europe mirror is dead so I downloaded it from US slowly ><
So here are 2 mirrors on my own hosting (server in france):
http://exa.servhome.org/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe (http://exa.servhome.org/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe) (fastest)
http://exadeci.com/outerra/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe (http://exadeci.com/outerra/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe)
Outerra devs I can provide you an ftp account if you want to on the exadeci.com server and make a cron to sync on the other faster server if you want to
-
Thanks, I've replaced the dead link with http://exa.servhome.org/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe (http://exa.servhome.org/Anteworld-0.7.11.2982.exe)
Thanks for the offer, it would be great until we get a proper hosting for it.

I didn't check the world for some time. The grass addition is great, looks very good. If there will be more height variation, it would add to the impact imo.
When are the trees comming? cant wait...:)
-
I can't seem to find how to run it, I'm not seeing any application files....
-
Normally installs to Program Files under Outerra/Anteworld. Accessible also through the start menu (All programs -> Outerra -> Anteworld)
-
for me the updater gets blocked with the line "Waiting for the original process () to end"
-
Just kill the old process - that was a bug in the previous version. After you kill the old process, the updater will apply the patch.
-

Thanks for the help. It worked. And wow, moving grass...it's really gorgeous.
The only minus I see with it is that it does not "take" object shadows (only the ground does). From some angles it can look strange.
-
Just a small issue I played Outerra on a 1920x1080 screen and when I launched with a screen of 1440x900 resolution I had the error "Couldn't find suitable screen 1920x1080" I edited eng.cfg but it didn't fixed it (strangely), so I had to download and install the new update
-
Was thinking, a trick to get shaded grass without too much performance hit might be to just get the grass to be tinted a bit if in a shadow region depending on time of day perhaps? This would mean you don't need to actually cast a shadow on each blade, it just has something that checks the area underneath for shadow present or not?
-
Grass will get shadows, but we need to change a few things in the pipeline for it first.
-
Damn it's sooo goood. I hope for more updates :) If you need any help with modeling i would be glad to help.
-
Today I saw video from Outerra on Youtube. It's amazing! Imagine a large on-line game, something like a GTA, where players can do whatever they want on all the world. I must check how my village looks :D.
-
I see great potential in this engine, the tools already implemented are pure brilliance.
Anyone familiar with Civil 3d can relate to that, and simple stuff like "flatten" for buildings.
If a proper import pipeline, this will take off in many areas.
Since Collada is mentioned, FBX should then be possible too.
FBX support animation, and instances too, is compact, and supported in many 3d software.
If in future able to import custom Lidar data, for own use on limited areas I would be a jumping banana :)
Already some 0.5m-1m data availeble over parts of NZ.
For noncommersial use, and free.

My countryside looks... bad. There's no any trees! Around my village is many of them, but in outerra only few. But mountains on the horizont are the same as in real life. Great work you doing here, I'm waiting for full version :D .
-
That's because trees are pretty much only on slopes at the moment. There will be a lot more eventually. :)
-
I would be a jumping banana :)
This is the best translated expression I have ever seen. Definitely part of my vocabulary now! :P

Same here, lol. My home town looks like a wasteland with a tree here and there...
-
Hello for a very long time I have been waiting for a release, and not that you have released it. I clicked download I downloaded and installed outerra.. Its 219MBs WTH... and inside the folder there is NO EXE.. so how is everyone running and playing the game I am soo angry :( I also am looking for Anteworld but NO WHERE there is a download anywhere on google!! HELP ME PLEASE I REEALLY NEEED OUTTERA!!! PLEASE!!
-
I almost dropped a tear... :D This can be the beginning of sg great
HOW ARE YOU PLAYING??!! WHAT THE HELL THERE IS NO EXE IN THE FOLDER I AM SO SAD.
-
The Data Folder you indicated is not where the exe is located. There should have been two folders chosen. Check Program files>Anteworld

Is it possible to run game on the secondary monitor in fullscreen? Also, when I start the game in fulscreen in 1920x1080, something wierd is going on, all the objects in game are shaking rapidly, any fix for this?
Despite that, GREAT GAME/ENGINE!!! Already bought it, waiting for beta :D
-
I was really surprised with Anteworld after some time playing with it. I thought to my self this is a great idea. Here you go $15. Is it going to be mod friendly. So we can start making add-ons?
-
Is it possible to run game on the secondary monitor in fullscreen?
If your OpenGL driver supports it, it should work. Please update your drivers and set a wide resolution.
Also, when I start the game in fulscreen in 1920x1080, something wierd is going on, all the objects in game are shaking rapidly, any fix for this?
Might be the driver, but also a third-party program that's interfering with the rendering. Please attach eng.log here, and check the listed programs from here (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=705.0)

Thanks! Yes, it's supposed to be mod friendly, but it needs some time to create the modding infrastructure first.

Well it might have been related to steam, or to wrong refresh rate - 1920x1080@60 works like charm, and looks briliant!
Thanks for help
-
Yeah, you can't use the Steam overlay with it. (Unless somebody knows a way to launch it with steam but disable the steam overlay in non-steam games?)
-
Yeah, you can't use the Steam overlay with it. (Unless somebody knows a way to launch it with steam but disable the steam overlay in non-steam games?)
What would the point of that be?
-
Not much other than showing what you're playing. But you can do that by renaming a txt file or something. :P
-
Hi,
Since last update I have an issue with the game. At load all seems ok, but after I move the camera (2-3 seconds) the terrain surface disappears, only objects remain (grass trees, etc).
Thanks
-
Looks like a 3rd party program interfering, or a driver issue. Please attach your eng.log
-
Here is the file. Thanks for the quick help.
-
Hmm I don't see anything wrong there. Can you make a screenshot how it looks?
You could also try it with default settings. Temporarily move eng.cfg and world.cfg away and run the program to see if it helps.
-
I get this.
and removing the files didn't help.
-
Please update your drivers - you seem to have 285.62, try 296 or newer (but 301 may have other problems).
-
I have not bought anything, I just wanted to try the demo but I can not. Sorry for my bad English but I'm Italian ;D this is my eng.log
-
Please reinstall it with default data directory (not in program files), and make sure you are not running any utilities listed here (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=705.0) or similar.
-
nothing to do, gives me an error. this is the report
-
It crashes in the driver. Apart from a hw problem or a bad driver install it can also mean there's a third party sw interfering.
Could you run the attached proclist.bat and PM me processlist.txt file it generates, so I can see what runs there and what could possibly be interfering?
-
One question: If i buy alpha, I'll have all updates. like in minecraft alpha ? :D
-
Exactly.
-
being an idiot. i installed it but it fails to add anything but an empty folder to the start menu. if i head into the outerra folder there is no start shortcut/icon. i've installed it somewhere else than in program files, as i saw was an issue here. any help would be welcomed.
i am so very into this but cannot get the thing to work. dash it all!
-
Hmm, even if you install somewhere else than program files, it still should create the right start menu item. You say start->all programs->outerra->anteworld is empty?
Try to install it again then to the default location.
-
right. that time it took and i have everything. booting up but gets st5uck preloading. onwards! :)
and thank you :D
-
First of all thank you for an very cool product with a huge potential. I do however have some comments and questions;
1). I wanted to make a plateau om a mountaintop. Experimenting using roads I got some semi-usable results. However I found it difficult to find the road markers once they had been deselected. Is there an way to do this ?
2). Is it possible to reset your world - removing all changes you have done to it ?
3). Is it possible to import your own 3D models, sound-effects etc into the world ?
4). The sun color choosing thinge doesn't seem to work for me.
5). Will there be enter able buildings ?
6). For now you can pass through objects - will you be able to adjust physical attributes ?
7). Will there be possible to have human/ailien avatars in the future ?
-
1) Road markers appear when you click on a road segment, but if the road is too deformed (usually in mountains) it may be more problematic. There's a >> symbol next to one button in road maker that cycles through roads in current terrain tile (around 2.5km in width), but you need to have a road selected already.
2) Your changes are in the cache folder, you can delete it but it will also remove the default scenery. You can reinstall it and save the cache folder if you want to keep it.
3) Importer will be coming soon, we are currently working on it and fixing issues in new unstable branch
4) Can you provide eng.log from a session where you are tweaking the atmo settings?
5)6)7) Each one planned
-
Thank you for a fast and excellent reply!
An log from such a session is enclosed :)
Edit: Didn't find the ">>" symbol though in the road tool...
-
Hmm there's nothing special in there. Only the sun color doesn't work, other sliders do?
I'm currently traveling and don't have a OT-usable computer with me, so I'm not sure which version contained the cycling symbol. As far as I can remember, it should be next to the lone button used to deselect the markers.
-
I see no change using the color palette thinge. All the other sliders seem to work for me just fine. I had a look again and unless I going blind, I cannot see this button. Perhaps others can confirm/deny this ?
Have a safe trip btw

That actually did it for me - I didn't realize you needed to touch the slider :)
As for the road editor I wanted to show I didn't have the "jump to next road marker" button. Perhaps it's somewhere else ?
Thanks for the help :)
-

Go to the help tab in the road editor and it has all the keybinds you need to know. Can't recall what the next / previous keys are.
-
Ok, so the >> must be in the unstable version :)
Anyways, I see what you meant by not being able to select roads. Road markers can be only selected when the road tool is visible. You seem to have closed the tool to get rid of the markers in the first place; you can do that by clicking on the leftmost button. It works that way so you don't lose your edits when you accidentally click away from the road you are working on.
-
[Linux version:]
Yep it is planned, but we first need to resolve major issues we've got here.
Well, that answer is now nearly half a year old - could you solve the major issues? What are the current plans for a Linux version?
Thanks!
-
To be honest, Linux version wouldn't be even in the plan until we actually matured the Windows version, because there's no point in diversifying our resources at this stage, to burn them on even wider array of hw/driver/os combinations to support. Graphics driver problems on Linux are widely known, and given that we still fight with the driver problems on Windows till today, I'm scared of what it's going to be there.
However, since one of our other activities with OT requires a Linux version, it's probably going to happen sooner - but we can't guarantee exactly when, as it depends on many things yet.

Im confuse were to download
First post in this thread. Big word download. Pick a host.
-
Thanks to the developers, with the latest updates(!?), my graphics problems described 2 pages earlier in this thread are solved. I can realx again in the beautiful sunsets.
Btw, are the 3D trees underway? Can't wait.
Thanks
-
So im the only one who cant download it? ^^ both downloads are unable to download
-
One from Gamefront, the other served by Google ... it must be some other problem. Maybe you have overtight security settings or something.
-
Ok, google drive worked. GameFront changed their policies. Your no longer able to download the file.
-
Will you ever be able to play it with Intel HD Graphics 3000?
-
Not until Intel supports OpenGL 3.3 on these cards. But from what we have been told, OpenGL 3.3 is not likely to be supported there - the hardware doesn't support some required bits.
-
Hello there, I'm new here.
Congratulations for the great job you did, outerra is awesome, never seen a such beautiful graphic engine in my life.
Searching in the forum I'm not able to find a thread that recap the alpha state so I write here. In case please redirect me in the right place, thanks!
Well, I was wondering when the next alpha will be released and what should be the new options and settings.
One of the think that I would like to see is an editor to model locally the ground.
Thanks.
-
Info about versions is posted in the support board (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0), current version change log is here (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=1402.0).
The next update will be out in a couple of days, will have Oculus Rift support, fixed underwater rendering, fixed smoke artifacts, fixed some perf issues on AMD 7xxx cards and a couple of other bugfixes.
-
thanks!

Hey, I have a few problems. I have a Nvidia 550GTX ti, 1gb gpu, 8gb RAM, and yet my game still tends to hit a little under 30-20 frames per second, my setting have been reverted to the originals, my drivers are updated, but still lags, can someone help me?

That card is not powerful enough for the default settings, you have to lower some parameters. Reducing the grass density will help most, also the terrain quality to 480p.

Hi, it's not working for me. I downloaded the free demo, installed it, opened the game and clicked on demo, then it started updating, some dos window appeared, then the game closed and I got an error :
The procedure entry point SHGetKnownFolderPath could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.dll
Im running Windows XP SP3 and the PC is not new, but should be able to run the game (Quadcore, 2GB Ram, GPU R7850...)
-
Hmm, we haven't checked it on a Windows XP for a while, looks that some dependency on a later version got inside. Thanks for reporting, we'll check it.
-
Thanks, I would like to test the performance before buying the full thing
-
Found the issue, it's the newest Oculus Rift library that contained that Windows Vista+ function. I reworked it there, will make a new version soon.
-
nice, when will it will be up? cant wait to test
-
Released, but I haven't been able to test it on a XP computer yet, please let me know if it works for you. Updated installers are at http://demo.outerra.com (http://demo.outerra.com)
-
Still not working:
First of all this also happened before this update when I tried it yesterday. I got this the first time I launched the game, then I got the SHELL32.dll thing right after double clicking outerra.exe
Now this also happened the first time. I try to open again and it opens, the game starts loading then I get this:
It seems like it crashes right when it starts generating trees.
-
Ok I deleted the Outerra folder on Documents & Settings and its not crashing, im gonna test around
edit: Ok, crashed again with the tree fatal error. I think it loaded now cos I spawned in the arctic pole where no trees where visible, as soon as I moved around I got a crash.
-
That's a problem/limitation with Win XP - there's not enough mappable memory when working with the GPU, given how the engine works. You have to close other programs, especially the browsers, that are eating from that limited memory pool.
-
I had all my browsers closed, and all other programs, even closed antivirus, firewall.. it crashes.
-
sorry to say this but after 12 years you shouldn't expect software to run on one of the oldest operating systems currently in use... also your 2 gigs ram aren't helping either...
-
This is one limitation of Windows XP that isn't easy to work around, without reworking the engine architecture. All programs share the same limited-size nonpaged memory pool, which is just 256MB on Windows XP. It's used to map memory from GPU (and other devices). If some drivers or background programs lock the memory from that pool, it may not be enough for outerra.exe to work with. We try to allocate the memory in advance and hold it, but some memory is always mapped dynamically. If it fails, it's usually a fatal error, though maybe for the trees we could skip it if it fails, but it would mean pieces of terrain without trees ...
-
Guess im fucked until I update.
-
Guess im fucked until I update.
... interesting, i had XP about an month back (basic SP3 version) and it worked - of course, updates and firewall shut down ...

Hi there!
I am interested in this engine. Really nice from screens. I downloaded the demo to try how it runs on my laptop. I have Lenovo with dual graphics. The integrated is from i5 Ivy Bridge, HD4000, the powerful one is nVidia GTX660M. The drivers are latest.
The problem is, that program seems to be running only on the HD4000. When I run it, I get warning message that Intel drivers are still not supported. I run it anyway, but it's not very smooth. Game says in the bottom left that my GPU is HD4000. Now, I tried to run the game with right click -> run with nVidia (which already says it's even default setting). The icon I have that detects usage of GTX660M says the Outerra is using it. But I'm not sure. I know that laptop aren't for games and high details, but I read that this engine runs well even on old PCs. I guess it really runs on HD4000 instead of GTX660M, even if nVidia panel says otherwise. Can't it be fooled? For example, even Fraps didn't detect this game, doesn't show FPS. Is there a way to try to force it use GTX? I don't want to switch it off in BIOS for now.
Thanks for reply
-
With Nvidia integrated graphics it should be possible to tell the drivers to use Nvidia instead of Intel, we are even automatically creating a profile for outerra.exe to switch it. If it's not working for you, the problem may be that you need newer drivers. Did you install the latest mobile drivers from nvidia.com (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us)?
Older ones can have problems with OpenGL apps like Outerra.
You should be able to see the profile in the Nvidia control panel, with outerra.exe assigned to use the Nvidia drivers.
-
Yes, driver is 320.49. The profile for outerra.exe is set for the nVidia card.
I missed the tabs in graphics settings, so I set some things a bit lower and it's smooth now. But I don't know, shouldn't fraps work too?
-
We block Fraps and all programs that try to inject into outerra.exe to display graphics overlays, because the programs aren't well optimized for OpenGL and separate app/rendering threads, leading to frequent artifacts and rendering bugs and crashes. When these injected programs crash, it looks as if Outerra crashed and we get all the blame, so we decided to block them by default.
You can allow it by running outerra.exe from command line with allowext argument
outerra.exe -allowext
That will permit Fraps to hook in.
-
Hey guys! By "accident" i just stumbeled across this game today through Ocolus youtube channel (caynonrun with Mig) And i have to say i'm very impressed by the demo even if it's lacking rivers, weather, animals, caves and great looking road textures (road gets blurry/jaggy from a distance).
I'm seriously considering buying the alpha version but first i need an answer to a pretty important question, at least in my world.
1: Will this ever going to be finished?
Sorry but i'm just too tired of wasting money to people who gives up halfway, and since the demo of Outerra has been out since Feb 2012 i strongly suspect this is going to meet the same fate as all the other let downs.
-
I'm pretty confident that this will get finished, just not right this second or maybe this year. I certainly don't regret my 15 $ and even if by remote coincidence this won't get finished it's really not that much money and definitely not wasted ;)
Plus you can't compare Outerra to some of the more recent crowd-funded games out there , Outerra is an engine and the game Anteworld will be its showcase/tech demo and will be eventually a complete game once the engine is finished and more people work on the game, also there are updates which are released though irregular but still consistently so I wouldn't project an end to this anytime soon :D
-
Tnx for the reply and for making me a little more wiser. Hell, this beats the hell out of FSX in almost every part regarding eye-candy so i guess i will give it a go! :)
-
The engine will be definitively usable somedays.
-
Having a blast with the engine so far but i'm afraid i will get bored very soon, all i wanna do is build the tallest buildings in the world in the worst possible places :P
-
And why you dont do that? Thats possible now. You just have to create and import your stuff by yourself.
-
The dubai tower on top of Everest!

For example. I just placed the tower of pisa on a mountain in himalaya.

Gotta do some tweakin' to those 2-waypoint roads. ;D

Nah. That screenshot is ye olde stuff

Sorry guys but can someone tell me more about this Demo?
What exactly can I do with this free version? Build stuff and try it out or there is a whole world to explore already?

Really Awesome~!!!

Hi people i whant congratulate the developers of this amazing game, i have Outerra Demo some time ago and all runs fine until this last update, they make the update directly when i start the game and now shows the images like the ones i put below. White faces.
Another strange thing is this hapens only in the resolutions 1680x1050 and 1600x900 and not in screen lower resolutions.
I use a Nvidea Gforce 9800 gt, and strange thing is when i quit the program they continue load in the sistem tray of the windows or windows task bar manager load whit 500mb i must go there and stop the process manualy.
Some ideas ? please..... Thanks in advance.

Try updating to Nvidia 327.23 drivers. Some changes we made uncovered some older bugs on Nvidia cards, that were already fixed in newer drivers.
It may be also a problem with increased GPU memory consumption in higher resolutions, what terrain quality settings are you using?
-
Hi, thanks for the replay suport cameni, well the terrain setings are exactly the same before the automatic update and resolution to.
My GC have 1gb ram and i have 4 gb memo so ......all programs closed etc.
Its semms to me my drives are 326.29 i go update them maybe this solve this issues.
thanks, your help is very much welcome here..

Hi , i update my all drives to the newest Nvidea Drives and i continue geting this below, strange i dont have this kind off issues in any other game related. so ???? much more strange is they already works fine for me before this last update... im very :( :( here
This change and increase the quantity of white triangles when you change the view angle in direction to the ground,.. like, where they must have shaders or more shining , more white triangles apear to show in theyr place, also this only hapens in the rocks meshs.

Odd, there were no changes in terrain I'm aware of that could cause it. Ok, I'll have to check it on some 88xx or 98xx card.
-
Guys, please i need help! When i run it it says to install the latest ATI Catalyst drive. I did and it kept showing me the error.
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 3800.
-
It usually means that Catalyst installer fails to reinstall the drivers. You should try Catalyst Uninstall Utility (http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx) to cleanly uninstall the old drivers first, then installing the new ones.
However, please note that AMD discontinued support for older GPU series (4xxx and lower), and the older OpenGL drivers are buggy and do not work with Outerra properly.
-
The installer fails to install with Error opening file for writing errors on most of the files. I've tried downloading it from 2 different mirrors. it appears that the installer is corrupted
-
Tested working normally. Isn't it what it says? For example, UAC preventing it from writing the files, or an antivirus ...
-
I am unable to install as well. I had Anteworld installed a few months ago and it's worked fine.
Recently when trying to open it I got some error about a camera? I can't remember the message, but it wouldn't open. I just uninstalled it and wanted to install a clean copy, but the installer gives me a bunch of errors saying "Error opening file for writing" I can abort, retry, or ignore. This message comes up for a TON of files.
-
Ok I take it back, running the installer as administrator (right click "run as administrator) seemed to work.
Now the error when I open Anteworld:
Fatal error
C:\Users\customer\Outerra\campos\earth\default.cam:1 : :camera - error while seeking for variable 'pos_x': syntax error, format invalid : expected identifier
-
Nevermind again... I'm back in action. If I put a little troubleshooting effort in until posting, jeez...
The default cam file was screwed up for some reason (all empty). Deleting it fixed it.
-
Hello, I got the free demo yesterday and played around in it and decided to buy it, so I purchased it and played around for about 10 min and then I looked the at the keyboard settings and found that "/" changed something (don't remember right now) but I pressed it while being in space and my game got a black screen and now whenever i try to play it's just black.
-
Might be that some files got corrupted. Please find the default.cam file in your data directory - by default in c:\users\yourwinname\outerra\campos\earth\default.cam - and delete it.
-
On my Haswell HD4600 graphics issues seems fixed with drivers 15.33.12.64.3383 or 15.36.0.64.3380, the latter runs 10% faster. Or a game update solved it, don't know.
-
We would surely like to have Linux/Mac version as soon as possible, but at the moment our available resources are limited and diversifying it even more would not be reasonable at this point. But it's definitely in the plan, and I guess Linux version will have its own pre-alpha reduced price period as well.
I hate to bring old topic from the grave, but I remember reading reasons for no mac version as low opengl versions supported in os x. Nowadays with 4.1 https://developer.apple.com/opengl/capabilities/index.html has anything changed? Is mac version still planned?
-
It's planned, but not a high priority at the moment; in this stage it's really not worth the effort - even for the Windows tech demo the user base is relatively small, and our commercial licensees aren't using/requesting macs.
Besides, it's not so ideal with the state of the OpenGL there: http://www.g-truc.net/post-0672.html#menu (http://www.g-truc.net/post-0672.html#menu)
The problem is that Apple doesn't even admit bugs and if they patch them, it's in some next release. That would require significant effort to work around the issues specifically for macs.
So I guess the Mac support will get the impulse once there's a product based on OT that can justify the investment, but right now with just the tech demo it's improbable.
-
Hi all, I'm new at OUTERRA, download the demo version but a few minutes pass by box and page money that calls up, now is where comes the problem, once made the payment, not would need to send to the email electronic version full or some download links activation code?
No, seems strange to me
Gracias a todos Thanx all
-
If you purchase full version, you just need to log in with your credentials and full functionality will be enabled there, no need for any extra activation code.
-
it wont let me play and i get it i dont have the right grahic cards but im not going to get it without permission im only 14.

Hello Brano,
why does not the Demo Vers. -Download? I can wait 1xxxxx hours but it did not happen ... always the same - Page error! ???
Now I can not make new OT Installation ...

I bought Outerra Anteworld as a AAA game developer.
-
Thanks.

Hi all,
I've had to uninstall Outerra and doesn't keep the original installer anymore. What should I do to get it back to my computer? Any download link available?
Thank you!
-
It's on the first page of this topic.
http://planet.anteworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-16.6601.exe
-
Thank you DenisJ, i've seen that, and i've already installed, but how do i do to get the full access as before? now i'm stick at the demo version, gosh, i'm missing something..
-
If you login with your user and password, you'll have full access.
-
Nice! Thank you KW71!

I'm curious, but is this still being developed anymore?

I don't see what graphics card you have got. Please upload eng.log.

What do you mean? What does it do?

I have had many problems with this latest version. The antivirus insisted that the application outerra.exe was a virus, and erased it by deleting the file from c / program files / outerra. And when I hit the shortcut I could not find it.
So I have had to uninstall and perform clean installation and control avast antivirus since it does not allow me to use ot.
::)
-
Is it that kind of "antivirus" that performs a sophisticated analysis and then quarantines anything that wasn't installed by a sufficient number of people?
-
Yes

Hi from a new outerra fan.
Before proceeding, I'm checking out outerra's/anteworld's capabilities through the demo. A few questions, please bear with me:
I downloaded Anteworld 16.1.0.7503 and installed it on a PC (modern and fast) with temporarily no internet access. I also downloaded earth_px.otx,earth_pz.otx, Bern_OSM.otx (South Europe, Central Europe etc).
Now when I start Anterworld I always get the message "...Could not open...-bio/-x/base.desc", nevertheless the test scenes 'default.cam' and 'Monterrey...' work fine and as expected.
Then I doubleclicked (and they successfully installed themshelves according to the message I receive) the rest (earth_px.otx etc). My questions:
1. How do I move to a specific area or country (say, Germany) after the installation of those extras which offer no pre-saved positions?
2. Can I use for this the map interface with the red dot, clicking an area and then clicking 'set location'? Currently if I do this the program seems to load for ever
files with the extension "*.wad" and I get no scenery, regardless of how long this file loading is going on. (In one instance I left the program loading those
files for over 45 minutes and nothing happened. It just kept loading files).
3. The same thing happens with the 'Bern_OSM' addon when I click directly one of the '.jpg' pre-saved positions (Bern, Airport etc): eternal loading of '*.wad' files
and no scenery. What I'm doing wrong?
Thanks and congratulations on what seems to be the future of the flight and of real-world driving simulation
-
It's apparently still missing some data and trying to download them. Even if you have got the full datasets, it will check if there aren't newer data available.
Please check the eng.log to see what data it tries to download.
-
Hi cameni. I understand you are the leading person of this magnificent project.
Regarding your advice I checked out 'eng.log' and came up with the following recurring pattern:

Ok cameni, I finally realised that an internet connection is indispensable even for the demo mode, so I did my best and restored internet connectivity. Now after a lot of automatic updates everything works out ok.
Just one last thing, before proceeding to the full version:
I was really fascinated by the swiss roads add-on and I'd like to make sure it will work with my outerra installation.
Yet unlike the "BERNE_OSM.otx" link on your pages which works fine, if I click on the "swiss_roads.otx" link all I get is a '403 not found'
error, the file is not available.
Could you please tell me, how can I get this "swiss_roads.otx" file?
best regards
-
Swiss roads now download automatically from server, but probably not in the demo mode?
You can download a newer version here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2sEuImjhwn_LUVsR2w4dEcxS1k

Thank you cameni, you have been most helpful and as you may already be aware, since the last few moments I belong to the Anteworld's full-version community.
