Hi,
Looks like there were no posts for more than 24 hours. So will do one :)
The problem I'm facing is that it doesn't look like Open Collada is updated often. Their last update for windows platform was on 2011-01-15.
And they originally support only max 2011 till now (however 2012 works as well), and there are 2013 software versions here already.
http://opencollada.org/news.html.
It might be not so common problem at the moment, but looks like this difference will always exist.
Some people already requested Open Collada 2103 support few month ago. But still there's no much movement.
https://github.com/KhronosGroup/OpenCOLLADA/issues/109
Also probably the most common soft for building creation is SketchUp (I mean they have the biggest building library and easiest way of creating them).
This way Outerra could get a lot of Static content. Few my things that I could bring from there:
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/2183/3dbuidings.png (http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/2183/3dbuidings.png)
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/5575/3dbuidings2.png (http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/5575/3dbuidings2.png)
I know that now I can do it, by downgrading max at least to 2012 (and for me is problematic, due to work). And reconverting everything.
But with time more and more people will face it.
So it would be nice to have some more common and stable format for Outerra's Importer.
-
Why don't you export Collada from Sketchup directly?
-
Hmm... Last time I've tried to import Sketchup Collada, Outera crashed. Was thinking that it's not supported (same as Autodesk Collada).
Will check again. Thanks
-
We are going to add support for FBX format soon...
-
Nice. Thanks a lot.
By the way - SketchUp Collada worked. But maybe due complex object, it didn't work straight away. 1 of 3 times Outerra freezed.
Here's a result - this is 103 Series Soviet House (built somewhere at 1989):
(http://imageshack.us/a/img145/9333/screen1351612058.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/145/screen1351612058.jpg/)
(http://imageshack.us/a/img141/43/screen1351612074.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/141/screen1351612074.jpg/)

Those kind of buildings are made from blocks (so they are widely spread over post soviet countries, but in different shapes) and if anybody needs, I have separate blocks modeled (Straight and 2 way turns),
So any shape house can be constructed.

Great!
FBX is integrated into almost all Adesk products, so will be useful.

Looks very useful, are they modelled in Sketchup?
-
I think I've modeled them in 3D Max. But sure can export in load of formats.
-
fbx support is great news!
another question i have regarding dataformats...alembic is a big hype right now...did you look int that? it seems to be extremly memoryfriendly.
-
another format I was not aware of ??? - so many formats out there :-X
-
Been away too long, dealing with personal issues.
FBX support will finally allow me to import Lightwave models without going through multiple programs for conversion! WOOHOO!
(Now to just get a PC up and running again that can play with Outerra without wigging out!)
-
Is there any update on FBX compatibility?
-
Not yet, I'm finishing animations so there is no time for that now...
-
Sad. Stuck in max 2013 :(
And SketchUp good for me only for buildings.
Somehow it didn't like my plane from max.
However animation is great news!
-

Is it by some miracle a vertex animations? :)
-
If you mean the skeletal animation yes :)
-
I meant something like that
Unity3D Point Cache animation with MegaFiers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCsjGyx68os#ws)
But skeletal animation is even better, if it will be like that
opengl skeletal animation testing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5Ix4umaiiY#)
-
Is there another usage of it other than flag animation?
-
Flexible wings on planers for instance, tents on tracks, clothes&fabric etc. Even tires on vehicles:

-
I think the best use of Point Cache is for for complex physics animations - destruction, soft materials etc.
The animation is pre-processed in Max or simmilar and exported as point cache.
Can be used for trees, leaves animation.
For outerra it's useful for Windsock animation.
Especially it can be used in conjunction with skeleton animations.
в
For example - the Windsock (heading and strength) is animated with script (biped). But the actual cloth deformation can be point cached.
Actually the same as with flags:
In 3D software different wind strength animations can be point cached and divided in loops.
Outerra, depending on wind velocity - does 2 things , turns flag along the wind and triggers necessary loop.
UPD:
I think I'm wrong, destructions are easier to store as with skeletal anmations.
But soft objects still would benefit from point cache.
-
I think the skeletal animation is much better choice for flexible wings, and other stuff you mentioned is much more suitable for physics than predefined animation. Vertex animations are memory hungry. But they can be useful for facial animations but that is big if too because it can be achieved with skeletal animation too.
-
That's good enough for me. As long as the result is achieved I don't care much what technique were used :)
-
I thought the FSX is using skeletal animationsfor wings and flexible landing gears (like c172) or am I wrong?
-
Yes, fsx use skeletal animation
-

Not complaining as I'm aware you guys have plenty to do.

Could you provide a link to the models?
-
Sure:
Here's a collection of houses in Sketchup format:
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=6d82bea9d0104666b76d88d6c8500c14 (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=6d82bea9d0104666b76d88d6c8500c14)
+ you can find a model of school in this collection (quite common for that region as well).
Any of houses made from 3 blocks. So you can open them in Sketchup and construct your own.
-
Actually, to make it easier for everybody.
I will break down the model and will make it ready for Outerra.
So anybody can construct houses inside game.
Will post link here.

Soviet Building (103 Series) v. 1.0
(http://imageshack.us/a/img145/9333/screen1351612058.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/145/screen1351612058.jpg/)
Download:
http://sk-films.com/downloads/Building%20103.zip (http://sk-films.com/downloads/Building%20103.zip)
Description:
5 stage Soviet building - 103 series.
The archive contains 3 separate models (Main building and 2 turns). Use them to construct your own shaped building.
All sizes are very close to real. Some taken from building schemes, some calculated using this data and available building photographs.
Installation:
1) Unzip to ..\Outerra\Anteworld\packages
P.S. Will update Specular maps and Reflections in next version

alembic is a neat format for vertex animation. i think its open source. and usage is spreading like fire in the industry
