Title: HD7850 black screen
Post by: nealius on November 16, 2012, 06:49:14 pm
AMD Phenom 965 Black Edition
HD7850 (tried with 12.10 and 12.11 Beta drivers)
8GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 64-bit

All I get with Anteworld is a window with a black screen. No crash, no CPU usage, no memory usage. This window has no buttons for minimize, maximize, or close. Clicking inside the window does nothing. Hitting F2 does nothing.

I've tried killing all unnecessary processes including:

-Steam
-Malwarebytes
-all processes associated with my joystick
-all processes associated with iTunes
-all processes associated with my webcam

I tried deleting world.cfg in case it was corrupted. All no joy.

Attached in eng.log. The forum wouldn't let me post it because it exceeds the 2000 word limit.

SOLVED. Installed the developer version.

However there are a lot of glitches with disappearing ground features, square holes appearing in the land surface, and when I get close there are white squares checkerboarding the ground.

We haven't seen the missing ground bugs on our 7850, but there were some on earlier series (6850, 4850). We identified a bug in AMD drivers which was reported and fixed internally by AMD, but it will take 2-3 months until it appears in a public version. There's a workaround that suppresses the glitch but not entirely, we'll probably have to revert to a different algorithm until the driver bug's fixed.

Can you send a screenshot of the location where it happens for you?

Sure, I'll get a screenshot as soon as I can tomorrow. As for location, it happens anywhere and everywhere.

This is not location specific. It happens everywhere I go.

That was a known bug of the 3352 version, why didn't it update to 3391?
Wait, are you using the demo mode? Seems there it wasn't updating properly, I've fixed it - should update you to 3377, then after a second restart to 3391. Those builds came with lot of perf fixes for 7000 series too.

Yes, I'm using the developer demo. Should I re-download and reinstall?

It should update automatically when you run it.

I see this bug sometimes on version 3391. It is relatively rare, but interesting is that it started after I purchased full version. I never saw it in demo mode.

(My GPU is Radeon 5870 with Catalyst 12.8 )

Flying trees mean the terrain quality is set lower than the trees need, did you try to boost it to 720?

According to AMD devs the bug can still appear with our temporary workaround, it will go completely away once their fixed drivers are released publicly. I haven't received confirmation which Catalyst will contain the path yet.

I don't get any automatic updates. I tried re-installing but now I get this error when I try to run it:

That's the problem of new config used by an older version. You can delete eng.cfg and world.cfg.

Wondering why it isn't updating automatically, never seen the problem. Can you post your eng.log? There must be something.
After that you can apply the patch manually using this: Anteworld-0.7.12.3352.patch-3391.exe (http://outerraworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.7.12.3352.patch-3391.exe)

The update seems to have fixed it, but I keep getting a window at the top saying "INFO:_______" or "ERROR: _______object does not exist!"

I can't seem to post my eng.log file because it exceeds the 2,000 word limit for the forum, and it exceeds the file size for attachments.....

Those errors are because not all objects from the old version were reimported in the new one. I guess you should have done a clean install to avoid all these issues ...

I thought uninstalling and reinstalling was about as clean of an install as one could get....

Uninstaller doesn't remove your custom data, we specifically wouldn't want to remove your edits of the world. But it probably should be changed to delete anything that can be restored with the installer, to some extent - configs, terrain data ...

Well, I just uninstalled it, then deleted the Outerra folder from my Users folder to clean everything out. Reinstalled the developer version and tried to run it, but I get "syntax error, format invalid." After installing the patch, it works, but has those errors.

I guess the syntax error is the problem. Might have something to do with my GPS coordinates not taking me to the right places either :p

Hmm, are you sure that you are deleting the right folder? Getting a syntax error right after a clean install ... that's odd. Can you change the data path when installing?
Btw you can zip the eng.log and attach it here.

Ok, so apparently since I'm on Windows 7 the default install path is Program Files (x86). I uninstalled and deleted everything and installed it to just C: and it runs fine now. Appears to have updated itself as well.

Attached eng.log. This one is much smaller this time.

That's where 32 bit programs go because you're using 64 bit Windows.  Doesn't necessarily have to do with using Windows 7.

Well yeah, but if a 32 bit program installs into the x86 folder, shouldn't it work? If it doesn't work and needs to be installed in the default Program Files folder on 64 bit OS's then why does it not automatically do that?

You know what?... I might have actually anticipated that problem myself way back when I first installed it, and installed it somewhere else as well.   ;D

Majority of people have Win7 x64 and install into default path, myself too and everything works as expected. I think the problem must have been related to the data directory, and the changeover from the old version to the new dev branch.
