Here is one that came to me after returning home at 4 in the morning, after a wedding (Greek style!):
The terrain in Outerra is generated by a heightmap. If that is true, basicaly an image determines the height of the terrain.
That is for vertical elevation. What if there was a set of heightmaps that could be used horizontally?
Think about a horizontal terrain engine, using a small set of lengthmaps! :P to make large amounts of buildings to populate cities and wrap buildings around roads. The height of the building could be generated normaly by the vertical engine. :-\
