Title: Outerra on Steam
Post by: Concussion on June 28, 2012, 05:11:01 pm
Have you'll ever thought about getting your game on steam market? I don't know if you are already against doing it though. You might get more popularity if you did.

When there is a game to put on steam maybe. Their content servers would really only need to host the initial files and it would just update itself automatically thereafter. My only issue is the steam overlay may not work with OT.

I would like to see their multiplayer handling system used but with the entire earth that may get tricky..

Yea, first there must be a game.
It's basically a promotion platform, we are not against it unless it would limit our other options. I remember reading somewhere that there were some conditions that didn't go well with Minecraft ...

Well Steam overlay doesn't like running over a Java app for one...  Good thing it's full screen is windowed, so you don't really need to use the overlay, but you need to run a renamed shortcut or file through Steam if you want others to know what you're doing.

Thats not the reason. The reason is, that steam dont want the short distance between devs and clients. Prominent example is overgrowth. They firstly tried to enable their game for steam, but they saw, that there are too heavy restrictions for them. Its like selling the soul of the game. As dev you dont have the permission to release patches as you want. It has to be communicated with steam. So, thats one reason. And there are others.

Well using Arma 2 as a good steam example.. YES they want to release the "BIG" updates through steam.. BUT you don't even need to run steam to launch Arma2. You can even move the game folder out of steam and put it where-ever and launch it. Steam really only need be there to do the CD key registration and to download the initial files. After that you can execute and install beta-patches on your own without any interference.

The exact same setup would be what OT would use. Initial DL and registration through steam. Then essentially on its own unless you choose to run it through steam. I mean the WHOLE ENGINE is based on constantly streaming terrain and soon model data. So what if a few bug-fixes get through. Maybe Steam is afraid the dev's are plotting to send virii to everyone? Won't make a difference.
