Title: Dynamic weather
Post by: Salmo on March 29, 2011, 08:46:19 pm
Outerra features description says "Real-time atmospheric scattering computations are used to render the correct atmosphere from all altitudes. A more complex atmospheric modeling library can be integrated as well."

1. Does outerra incorporate dynamic weather support?
2. Does dynamic weather vary temporaly? ie. varying weather at the same location at a different time.
3. Does dynamic weather vary spacially? ie. Varying weather based on where in "the world" you are.
4. Can the weather be user-configured?

There's no weather incorporated yet. When it is implemented, it will surely be dynamic in spatial and temporal dimensions - it would be a serious flaw, having a whole planet with weather being the same everywhere.

What kind of user configuration are you imagining?

I'm accustomed to authoring combat flight sim missions with selectable weather types (no dynamic weather in my sim :( ) such as clear, clouds, hazy, rain, snow, blind. I guess by user-customisable, I mean will there be access to the weather/climate API's for developers to build user selectable weather types into their apps?

I'm actually expecting that once there are some weather "primitives" in place, someone will make an addon that manages weather according to real one, or by whatever people could want.

Default implementation should be something fractal based, changing in time.

You could probably partially build it off of the current cloud map.

Probably using two last maps to interpolate between them, adding further fractal noise dynamically.

Weather is so important in giving the feeling of realism.

When combined with a Day & Night cycle, obviously including dawn & sunset, it makes the weather look... I don't know where I'm going with this. Just that rain in the dawn/day/sunset/night is different.

But, that's what I like about this engine.

weather after probably everything else. I presume it will come even after the release of the "game".
