Title: Earth terrain model
Post by: Abyssus Games on June 06, 2012, 01:52:16 pm
I was wondering whats the elevation data look like in the middle of a city? Is it flat allowing for buildings to be placed in the same location as in the real world or would the terrain have to be changed?

Also is there any current plans for AI through the engine or will the developer have to addon the AI themselves?

Often it's not at the ground level because the rays used to scan terrain heights bounce off the buildings too. For example, Manhattan has hills where the skyscrapers are built. For the purposes of Anteworld it can be viewed as a rubble, for games that need the original terrain it would have to be leveled.

Some basic helper AI functions probably will be a part of the engine.

So its more of a DSM Data set you've used rather than a DTM Data set.

Would it not be possible in that case to use the data to add buildings to the planet and then use a system to apply textures to said buildings?

That data are pretty coarse, 90m resolution. For buildings we could use OSM data instead.

Do you mean OSM as in OpenStreetMap? If so I didn't know they had building data as well.

I'm wanting to make a city which is as close to real life as possbile so if OSM can do it then that would beb brilliant but if not I will probably import the road map from OSM and create random buildings for the cities to try and save some time.

Yes, OpenStreetMap. They have floor plan polygons there, and sometimes also the height of the building in the attributes.

That's cool, I'll have to have a closer look into that and see how accurate they all are.

Also is there plans for a day/night cycle and random weather changes?

Day night. Yes. Random weather Yes OR Have the weather match the real world weather in realtime. http://www.intellicast.com/Local/WxMapFull.aspx (http://www.intellicast.com/Local/WxMapFull.aspx)

Real time weather would be brilliant! I'm planning on having time of day matching local server time as well
