Title: 3D Forest derived from LIDAR datas
Post by: foxfiles on January 09, 2013, 06:51:02 am
Happy new Year to all of you and congrats to the OT team for the last release which is showing impressive enhancements !

I just want to share about this interesting EU research done on 3D forest using LIDAR , enjoy :

Interesting, reminds me that we can't do leaning trees currently.
Though I expected the trees would be LIDARized in some way there too, not billboards.

Do want!  Just sayin...  ;)

Trees were identified with an accuracy of 96% in the canopy height model. However it does not include any tree less than 2m height or tilted/fallen trees having effective height less than 2m. Tree models for the simplicity are 2D and have size, shape, location and tilt based on the LiDAR derived inventory parameters like species, tree height, canopy tilt and orientation. To me it gives me the same feel as I saw the forest in reality.

And the video description is very interesting.

I'm encouraged by this sort of thing.  Our planet is a cool place to explore.  Being able to really see what it's like in increasingly accurate detail - not some sort of "plausible" world - can only help people appreciate our little blue ball.  When I compare what I can enjoy now to what was available in the early 90's.....  the next 20 years promise to be extremely exciting.  I'm glad Cameni and Angrypig are leading the charge!!!  :D

Yes, I agree, they have them, surely they are not fully able to render them properly,
anyway I find quite nice the way they have extracted all these parameters from the LIDAR...
I wonder what percentage is automatic and what is hand done ?
