Title: Star Wars Universe
Post by: halobungie on October 14, 2010, 06:15:33 am
Hello,

my idea is to make a Star Wars Universe with this genius Engine!

Greetings,
halobungie

It's a shame that the Star Wars franchise will probably overlook this fantastic engine, but it's true.  Shame that I don't have a better thing to write about for my 100th post here either. :(

I'm surprised you didn't suggest a Halo universe!  :P

Meh... Halo... it's basically Starship Troopers without the bugs.  Anyone can design a space marine suit and put it in a game.

In fact, that's what kind of mod I'd like to see.  *evil laugh*

I'd like to see that too. =D

Actually, Halo has one of my favourite game storylines, even though I will admit the game itself is a little over-hyped.  :)

Bugs, a halo style world ... more possibilities that leaves me with too many ideas and not enough drive to complete them.

I love Halo (the original), and I loved Starship Troopers (only for the inane bugs and plotline ... great "B-movie" but sucked in substance).  Guess I need to model a "Bug" and have Cameni instance it when he gets the character modeling in place (if it's on the to-do list), just for the insane amount of instances it would require.  Push his engine to the limit.

Maybe Angrypig will become a true Angrypig for just the suggestion.  He's so quiet on these forums, I bet he'll cuss us all out for the suggestion :D.  Either that, or he'll instant a platoon of marines to blow us all to hell and back :D

I actually don't know what the Halo is all about, only some bits and comments that got to me through daily news.
Never watched the Starship Troopers either, give me some time to fill up my classical education here :)

Was it a ringworld where Halo was taking place? Would require special code, but the views could be interesting.

Pretty much a Ringworld.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there was a Celestia "Halo/Ringworld" mod, if you're interested in that sort of thing.  It's been awhile since I delved into Celestia though (my first foray into my fictional world dealt with the solar system in Celestia for my fictional novel).

Yeah there are seven different ringworld "superweapons" in Halo.  The majority of the ringworld surfaces are very similar to Earth's.

But being able to make a "ringworld" in Outerra would be jaw-droppingly amazing!  Would be interesting seeing how physics would work though.

Well on earth gravity just pulls everything to the center.. On a ringworld the center would push everything away. Easy, Peasy, Japaneseee.

Wondering if Cameni thought to add a gravity equation to his engine :)

Would be cool to be able to specify a size/density variable to the earth within the engine, and then automatically calculate the gravity.  For a Ringworld type scenario, it would probably have to have a Centripetal Acceleration variable as well.  (Or just do a -g calculation for "inside/outside" worlds).  That way, you could change the parameters of the world and still have local effects in place.  Imagine trying to fly a plane in the atmosphere of Mars, with only a fraction of Earth's g-force, based on the mass/density :D.  I imagine he's going to save that for Outerra's licensees, though :D

The physics engine is separate from what cameni is actually building. That's why its currently using "Bullet" physics. I'm not even sure how it handles moving from one part of the world to another. Having gravity on a sphere with a player rotating to face downward has always been a challenge in gaming.

Not sure if JSBSim is capable of handling it (but it can be provided with external forces), but for Bullet which is used for ground vehicles we are already specifying the gravity vector each frame. At the very beginning it was set only for the initial position and left unchanged, what would cause a small tangential force if one moved further away. I think I even tried to prove that by driving sufficiently far from the initial spot, but the effect was small compared to the unevenness of the terrain :)

Well, regarding Star Wars, the cancelled game: Star Wars Battlefront 3, did promise the prospect of seamless surface to space warfare.

Now, that will be easy with this engine.

Would you be willing to get a couple of space based vehicles, maybe the ISS and a earth docking port?

Just a couple of ideas...

I dunno, i think we just have some amazing modding support so people can make warthogs and ATST's as they please..

Course it'd be awesome if we could roll around katamari's too.

Always dreamt of that since Star Wars: Battlefront 2. You would think by now lucasarts would have some game with this feature.

Still it won't be as interesting to me unless its a new Star Wars MMO that allows us to command fleets containing ships such as Imperial class star destroyers or Mon Calamari cruisers. That will be the best star wars game ever.

Do we know how many connected users can be in the world at any one time?

Is that a stupid question?

Because then we can start to consider this a possible basis for a MMO.

He's mentioned before how the engine focuses on just the world and rendering right now, Networking and Physics are seperate pieces of the puzzle.

I thought as much.

How hard would it be to have a tech demo that had, like i mentioned before, a space based vehicle, the ISS and a earth docking port?

Thanks.

It would require some physics for the space vehicle, and all the models. In the game there should be something covering this aspect of worldplay, like initially flying a colony pod ship from the mother ship down to selected spot on the planet, and then later ferrying stuff around between the ground and the space station.

I can't help but think of those wacky space elevator ideas.

And then i can't help but think of destructible buildings.  ;)

If you make small but awesome tech demo's then I think you will receive much more publisity in general ;)

Personally, I just want to see an amazing video!

If you want me to write a script, with camera action etc, then I'd be more than happy to do that.

Although, at the moment I'm a little busy with a huge Augmented Reality business proposal.

Also, could this run on a Xbox 360?

Thanks

Why don't you ring up Mr Lucas and ask him. The direct approach is very effective...

You know, that was a joke. We wouldn't want to do Star Wars even if we were begged to. We enjoy our freedom, thanks.

Oh, but we could sell them a license so they could struggle with filling in the content themselves :P

Don't be that way to him, Edding.  I've no understanding of programming beyond Java and Visual Basic, but that hasn't stopped me from doing well here.

Then is there any possibility of there being Star Trek starships that we can fly in Outerra? :)

Well, there's a possibility of flying a Death Star in Outerra too, I'm just saying we, personally, wouldn't want to do a Star Wars game, or any game based on some existing franchise. Undertaking such a thing would kill our ardor for sure :)

not to mention how ruined star wars has become due to Lucas and the prequels.

You are right, I don't have much programming experience.
I have made my own website using HTML and a database using VisualBASIC.

Sorry is I have acted as if I am a programmer, I'm not.

What I meant was that I am working with a few museums in London and that there could be a way to utilise the Outerra Engine.

Apart from that, I do have a game idea, it was a mmo with a twist. But, as I have been told: "Networking and Physics are seperate pieces of the puzzle."

I read somewhere here on the forum that right now,
it is possible to connect two computers at once with the engine
and that the networking capabilities are not that much developed yet.
But there should be networking capabilities later on (correct me if I am wrong),
thus a mmo game should be possible with this engine.

Great info, thanks.

I'm really excited know that I've seen the ISS video.

Space, Air, Land, and Sea.... truly limitless

How much would it cost to licence this engine?  ;)
