Title: Flying away at the speed of light
Post by: cameni on October 31, 2010, 04:52:03 pm
We've had this idea some time ago - to experience how fast the speed of light actually is by flying away from the planet in Outerra at that speed. Now I've made a short video showing exactly that - flying away from the surface to space, and then returning back (but overshooting past it).

Outerra - Speed of Light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MImRSkqV-Go#ws)

And while the speed is indeed great, one can feel that's also terribly slow when considering the extents of space ..

I went frame by frame and in 1 frame it goes from the surface to being able to see the entire earth.. So its pretty fast. But yes it is slow on the overall. Why did it seem the earth stopped getting smaller for a while? Did you stop before returning?

May be beneficial to do a few speed of sound vids on the surface.

Yes I stopped there. Otherwise I see that the atmosphere rendering causes artifacts from that distance, I should probably turn it off there completely.

Yes, if we ever flew at that speed, we'd have to render it on the screens like this to see anything. But then, the time would be stopped so no point in rendering anything.

I just wanted to picture it :)
