But I am glad to see it is progressing nicely. When my next PC build is together everything will be perfect.

just one thing i noticed, if the time of day is at say lunchtime and you click the time of day slider to night time without actualy sliding the slider, just clicking a point on the time line, the day turns to night with a bright sky!

so just clicking the time line without sliding it messes lighting up! but a qiuck slide from left to right on the slider will fix it again! ;)

ps. should a bug with a new build be posted here with the new build or in bug reporting thread? so i know for future! thanks.

The bug reporting thread was meant to give instructions about posting bug reports. Bugs specific to certain versions should go to the thread of that version, general ones should have its own topic created.

Whichever of the outstanding ones makes it first :)

We would really like to add some multiplayer features here. There's a work on the networking for slaving multiple OT instances into synchronized projection, hoping this will also produce the basis for a basic multiplayer.

Hm there seems to be some old model files: packages/bugsblake/ford mustang bullet2/ford mustang bullet2.pkg
But that has never stopped the renderer before. Maybe try to remove the old objdef file.

Oh, now I see this:
DEBUG: data root directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Outerra\Anteworld\

You installed data to the same folder, and the last version checks whether the program can create files in the data directory. When it can't, it should start using the default data path into c:\users\... directory.
Maybe that's causing some problems.

I have deleted the mustang folder and i even deleted bugsblake folder. I have no clue to what to do next. .. reinstall outerra?
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3722
Post by: cameni on June 08, 2013, 04:15:48 am
Please move the data somewhere where it can be written. Windows UAC prevents outerra.exe from writing to Program Files. You must have been experiencing some side effects from it before, only the latest version actually checks it and tries to do something about it (but fails in some cases).

Reinstalling is the safest way, but you can also move the data, campos and custom packages somewhere else and edit the data.cfg to point there.

Can't wait!  Live multiplayer would be a lot of fun!  Be sure to set up an official server.   :D  (Also note that griefers would first have to find whatever it is that you made, which will not be very easy...)

What do you think the limit of players/server will be around with the engine's current state?  I think right now the server load would be somewhat light since currently you can pretty much only just drive/fly around, place static objects, and make craters.  Also there would be a good chance that at any given time, not all (but still maybe the majority) of the people on the server would not be close enough together that they would need to be sent updated information about each other.  Heck, if UFO mode still used no model, you would only need position updates for vehicles and crater projectiles, at least I think anyways.

I don't really have any experience yet in working with networked games, so I could be missing something that is significant networking wise.

hi

i only just noticed myself but since the update the matlib files of craft have had the mats renamed!

if it was "chrome_102" and it was renamed it to "chrome" the the matlib file, outerra seems to have renamed it to "chrome_102" again! so it cant find the textures! as the dds file is "chrome"

EDIT: never mind, not a bug! i had re imported the other day and forgot! thought it had happened to another file too but was wrong! ignor this post! my bad!

Thanks for the update, now I can see stereo too :) The best mode is interleaved, works fine. Top/bottom seems to have a delay on the bottom picture, makes one sick.
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3737
Post by: cameni on June 16, 2013, 02:14:00 pm
Do you have a passive 3D monitor? On mine (LG 2342P) the delay comes when the display processes 3D input, but with the interleaved input it doesn't have to do anything with it so the extra lag isn't there.

I have this one - http://www.trustedreviews.com/aoc-d2757ph_Monitor_review (http://www.trustedreviews.com/aoc-d2757ph_Monitor_review)
Top/bottom and side by side modes work fine for games and 3d films, but in OT I have a delay. Maybe something with vertical sync, will try to figure out

Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3737
Post by: cameni on June 17, 2013, 03:58:59 am
Environment settings.

You'll mostly want to adjust the slope parameters, but perhaps also the elevation. Just a note here, the elevation there is an approximation of a thermal elevation, i.e the corresponding elevation at equator with the same average temperature. That means it's higher than the real elevation the more you go towards the poles.

in vue its using altitude, slope and orientation for ecosystem distibution. with orientation you can tell that a specific material or objects like trees only grow on normals that face e.g. eastwards. its nice to simulate weather effects on terrain...but also on other objects like moss on tree barks that only covers one side of the tree. have u played around with vue and its nodebased editor cameni? i think its pretty neat

I don't know why it crashes yet, but you have lots of errors in the log:

ERROR: Cannot find geometry "buggy_beta_1" in package "C:/Program Files (x86)/Outerra/Anteworld/packages/buggy_beta_1/buggy_beta_1/buggy_beta_1.pkg"!

WARNING: Cannot find library for object definition "C:/Users/chris/Outerra/packages/bugsblake/BMW/bmw_E81.objdef"

Do you have bmw_E81.objdef in bugsblake/BMW ?
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3745
Post by: bugsblake on June 20, 2013, 12:39:26 pm
yes that error has always been there, the buggy beta one! was a car i downloaded from here!

im not sure if i always had the error about my mustang? but that has been there for the last 2 updates at least! but i can still spawn/drive the mustang!

as for the bmw, first time i tried to import it i just called it bmw, but i deleted that folder and re imported it from scratch as bmw_E81! but still got the crash same as last time!

as for the matlib errors, i always get them untill i add the dds files! but never caused a problem before.

just looking now, although i deleted the first bmw import and re imported as bmw_E81, its made my folder as "bmw" again and in the folder i have bmw.impcfg, bmw.txt, bmw.pkg, but the last 3 files (script, matlib, objdef) are bmw_E81!

so im guessing thats a problem!

as for the evo, it dont crash but it says this (see pic)

thanks

EDIT: just checked the evo folder and its the same as bmw folder! half the files say evoix and the other half say Mitsubishi_EVO_IX!

ok i deleted the bmw folder and re imported it again and just named it "BMW" so all files were BMW same as the dae file! but still crashed! same error, cant find in bmw.objdef!

tried to import a new car i had setup ready in 3ds max, same problem! same crash! report sent!

Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3745
Post by: bugsblake on June 20, 2013, 01:54:26 pm
i just looked through all my imported cars and i can see what i think is the problem!

all my working cars have all file names the same like Dodge_viper_2013 objdef, matlib, impcfg, pkg, txt

since the last 2 updates, when ever i import a car it give the files 2 names!

as in for my BMW:
BMW.txt
BMW.impcfg
BMW.pkg

BMW_81.matlib
BMW_81objdef

so i dont know whats going on there but that seems to be whats causing the problems! happens with all cars i try to import now!

yes i can upload the folder! do you what the dae file and or the max file as well?

heres the imported folder

Ok so the problem is that angrypig changed something and now the vehicle won't load if the texture files are missing. I fixed it here and will make a patch.

If you mean "invert" box in stereo setting, it was on. If I uncheck this box, then the issue disappears, but I have to turn my glasses upside down again

Hi there,

love the Outerra world and using it for some days now to show 3D-models in an realistic environment. Using the Oculus Rift for that also.

But now have a problem after the last update this morning: I can place objects into the world but as soon as I quit the program and start it again everything is gone (including the hangar-test objects which are installed with the engine).

Tried several times to remove and reinstall the software but no luck. I can open it with the hangars, quit it and open it again and it works fine. But as soon as I place a new object (like the hero guy or whatever) after quitting and opening everything is gone (including the hangars). I haven´t used the Oculus after the last 2 or 3 new installs but no help (so it seems the stereoscopic view has nothing to do with it).

So any idea what to do? Appreciate the help. Thx a lot and keep up your good work...

Please post your eng.log, from the Outerra *data* directory that you chose when installing (be default in c:\users\yourwinname\outerra\eng.log).
Also, what is your Windows version?

Is this log from a working session or the one after it fails to load the objects? The latter would be more useful, here there's nothing interesting, maybe just that Avast is injected into outerra.exe.
Also, what is your Windows UAC setting?
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3770
Post by: Gerrit2002 on July 23, 2013, 11:50:20 am
To be honest don´t know what version of this file was (before or after missing objects).

So I made the following:

- Started Anteworld
- Placed some objects
- Closed the program
- Restarted it (objects are missing!)
- Closed it
- Attached the current eng.log to this post

My UAC is turned off to the lowest setting...

I tried to turn off AVast as well but no help...

Hmm, you can install the full base version 3722, then force it updating to the previous version by running
 outerra.exe -forceupdate 0.7.16.3722-3749

And then you can do two things - either run that version with -noupdate switch, or rename outerra.exe to something else and it won't attempt to update the next time.

Patch should be out in an hour or two ..

Not sure what happened, but it doesn't seem to have to do with the recent updates.  It started (again?) a few days ago.  It could possibly have something to do with the new-ish 326.19 Nvidia beta drivers, but idk.  I've been using 720p terrain and it's not started by a vehicle, so it doesn't seem to be that issue I had before.  However, I do still wonder if I've reached whatever that possible performance issue with roads is that I brought up quite a while ago, back before I restarted, but... this one seems like it might be related to the 3D grass perhaps (and the beta drivers?).

Only happens when I'm near the ground.  My framerate drops from my normal 55ish-60 to 45-42 with frequent spiked drops to the mid to lower 30s, and it gets very choppy and stuttery, only when I'm close to the ground.

I flied the plane in to a "white zone" and it just froze in the air.It was still "running", the sound of the engine, movement of flaps and stuff like that, but no movement.
The "white zone" is not only affecting visuals, but it reacts like a wall. When touching the perimeter, the jet gets frozen.
It happened multiple times, that is not the first time...But here's a picture :P

Actually... the flaps don't move when inside the "white zone", last time they moved because half of the plane was inside and the half outside was the one with movement, I think. And yeah sound still works that announces the flaps on.
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3782
Post by: Midviki on August 04, 2013, 09:56:29 pm
And yeah sound still works that announces the flaps on.

I tested some more, and no sounds sometimes.

And from that more testing I saw that sometimes when the jet doesn't get 'froze', it acts like 'landing' or hitting (better said) invisible terrain up in the air, over the sea as well.

Maybe it is from the driver... but I don't see any auto-update notifications available from the program. What driver version is "up to date" ?
Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3782

Title: Re: Latest version 0.7.16.3782
Post by: Midviki on August 05, 2013, 12:26:45 pm
Does it happen just on that one place or there are holes in more places?

The 'big square holes' they appear depending on coordinates, altitude / longitude / latitude.

There are multiple holes all over the map, and everywhere.

For example if I am at 1000 meters altitude... there are 2 holes 1 kilometer ahead,  but if I go for example at 2000 altitude in the place that I was a 'big white square' appears.

And inside that perimeter, depending how you get stuck in it, if half of the plane gets stuck the engine sound might not stop and flaps outside the 'white zone' might be able to move, but what get's stuck inside it acts like cutting a limb.

And I usually used to change altitude, by pressing the " `" / " ~ " ( console key ).But after some time even that got stuck, showing an error "NaN".And the scroll on the horizontal bar has no effect on changing the stats from that panel if you move it.

Before we go debugging it any further, please update your Catalyst drivers - somewhere around the 13.2 version there was a fix for one OpenGL issue that was causing tears on terrain, maybe the detection of whether the drivers have the fix for it is not ok.

Neah... I give up! (rofl)  :'(

I uninstalled the whole thing... and now it doesn't appear any driver installed...

But Outerra is still working.. ( probably my intel i3 driver kicked in ).Oh the terror. :)

I will probably just have to postpone this for a few days or till the official 14.x driver comes out in autumn / winter.

Anyway.. even with no driver installed... now it works, no more spikes or freezing in the air.So I am happy for now.And no terrain visual bug as well.

Anyway... I will still check this matter in the future.

I'm surprised I didn't notice this before, but it's just because of the usual order I click things - If you select an already placed road, delete a waypoint WITHOUT deleting the road, and then click "Make," it gives you an error window that just says "Error" and crashes.  Error report sent.

If someone were to make a modification this way, it should probably erase the deleted waypoints from the road being edited, even if it is still placed.

hmmm... for the last week or so.. I started to check up on outerra / anteworld again.

And my feedback on a lot of things is... good and bad... but mostly bad... but hopefully the developers of the engine can learn something out of it.

For me outerra / anteworld, for now, is just a 'recreational activity'.And by that I mean, me as an artist / writer / developer / programmer, for now I use it just to play on it an nothing more. But I have around 7-8 months since I last time used the engine to fly a plane / drive a car or something. And around 1 year and a few months since I started using it and kept a track on things and to notice differences.

Anyway... for now.... the things that I am not pleased with are:

- The vehicles have a lot of s&!t going on... glitches, bugs, errors, lag, frame drop, ... etc. .. you name it!And you know it was my only thing that made me relax most of the time and help my thinking process of what I should try to think of developing next on my future game.It just felt relaxing and made me imagine things with a much more ease.It was something nice... but now most of the things are mildly broke.

- Visual bugs there are many of those, but I will not start going in to that.. some of them might be my computer's or driver's fault and might behave in a different manner to some other users with different graphic cards or drivers. So I'm not going to go in to this now without presenting you some research and documentation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- And the third thing, for now, ... is the dramatically decreased of frames per second since last year till now.And I understand that things like increased textures, rocks and other things have a demand for more resources, and it is a good thing from my perspective... but like a year ago or something like that the engine / game had a vision of an efficient resource consumption.
Anyway... my point being is that... Can't you just go to some of your roots?.. and make the quality of everything a universal thing? ... And by that I mean, to make everything run on the same resource of creation and be a an equal divided quality.
You see what I am telling you here is more of something like 'reinventing the wheel' and rethinking everything through a new perspective.
And with all this blabbing I should give some example or something. For example... have you thought of procedurally generating the pixels, the colors, shapes and other things and not have to perceive them as 'physical' entities?I mean... think of it being endless but you only use one thing, like your own screen resolution of 1920x1080 made out of 2.073.600 pixels to be hand made by the developer, each pixel drawn by coding each pixel individually.
Anyway... that was just a thought of many from my side, and there are many more thoughts like this and what I just said here is not really elaborated with more details, but just like a 'thing' for you to think about it.What I just said on this last 3rd part, maybe seen as insane, but not impossible.

( This last part was something more of a personal thing with a much higher level of crazy from my side, but the first 2 are something of more substantial use, so don't take this last part personal, think of it like something a crazy person would tell you, after reading or hearing it you would dismiss it and ignore that thought ever again or keep the thought in a dark far corner of your mind and sometimes contemplate on it. )

Cheers!

- Alex

As the programmer, who you are, you may not get the idea to have better ideas than the developers. I am pretty sure that outerra is one of the best optimized world engines on this planet.

Actually your post is very offensive, insolent and somewhat rude. You do not know whats going on behind the scenes. All i can read is "i am unsatisfied with the slow process >:O" Thats unfair, isnt it? Get a closer look to the processes before judging them.

And if you believe that your ideas are the holy grail, you are free to implement these ideas in your own engine. I am very curious about that and please show me the result. I want to compare this with OT. And if you did a great job, which i guess because you are programmer, you could make some papers for the siggraph next year.

Midviki ... i would not take the FPS seriously at this stages. Just because theyr trying still some max. and min. capabilities of OT. When the biomes and weather is there, then the fine tuning will start. You can see too, that all models and vehicles still dont have any LODs, and the HW reserves have to be taken to account only after all basic and crucial stuff are implemented into OT. It may seem slow, but the things they do arent simple at all ( and yes, i would be more worried about the Hlaf-Life EP3 release date  ;D ). So at this time FPS/Quality will be an option-menu limits thing ... but it will be better, when the content is at the needed state.

Hmm, not much changed here, maybe the 3D grass does this for you? But given that your drivers are clearly in a bad shape, you should resolve that first before comparing.
It's disturbingly common with Catalyst - for example see this guy: https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1508&start=40#p40921
From 15-20 fps regardless of the settings to 200 fps (though I guess it was at a higher alt) at medium quality just by a clean reinstall of Catalyst?

I think we need to make a benchmark so that the different cards can be easily compared and things like these more easily detected.

I started a new topic about it, and I will fill it as soon as I get enough screenshots to document it. ( http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=2126.0 (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=2126.0) )

Keep in mind all this started a few days ago when my little nephew showed me that he had a problem and he got stuck driving the truck. So by this I assume that you already knew some of the issues and if not I am glad that I'm telling them to you now.

-----------------------------------

And as for the fps... I do not have a fps problems.. I have around 60 - 100 of them all the time. And many games work without having any trouble.

-----------------------------------

For the "crazy talk theories" that I talked about, I saw that in another engine. And I thought it would be cool to see that in outerra as well.Or something similar to that engine, not to break any patent laws.

Necro... I will bash you later for that...  ;D  ... and you should know there is already an engine that does specifically what I said in my crazy talk, and regards to 3rd part you should have not taken what I just said so seriously.

-----------------------------------

Midviki ... i would not take the FPS seriously at this stages.

Yep you are 100% right!
Mostly it was just an observation of mine, pointing out that if Cameni and the other devs keep adding things it will take a toll on many computers in the future and they need to have a more efficient system put in place starting from early stages.

Imagine in a city 10.000 players and 2.000 of them are driving cars!Imagine that much simulation....

Yeah, there seems to be some issue with the road elevation value not being set to the value that the selected waypoint currently has if you select a different road after editing (the elevation?) another road's waypoint, but as far as I can figure out, it seems to only be with the start/end points and the one before/after it I think?

Yep you are 100% right!
Mostly it was just an observation of mine, pointing out that if Cameni and the other devs keep adding things it will take a toll on many computers in the future and they need to have a more efficient system put in place starting from early stages.

Isn't it fair to say that computers in the future will be much better equipped to handle anything added to the game?  ;)

As with any game in an alpha state, things will get worse before they get better. Especially building a new engine from scratch when big teams of people could take years to complete. It just wouldn't make sense in my mind to focus more time, say, optimizing the swaying of grass before moving on to more features when it all may have to be changed or scrapped further down in the process anyway. Does an artist focus most of his/her efforts on a sketch or the finishing details of a painting? I've alpha and beta tested a lot of games, but then again I'm no programmer so what do I know :-X

Only bug report I have thus far is that my trees look flat and cardboardy :o

Wouldn't it be awesome if Cameni and Angrypig had like 50-100 developers at their disposal, all knowing how to work with the early Outerra technology?
The 3D trees would be here in no time I guess  :D

Will the next update be 0.7.17? Because it's been really quiet now for a couple of weeks :P

Yeah, when switching roads with the road window still open, for the start/end points on the newly selected road, the elevation value in the window stays the same as the last point selected on the previous road.  Only seems to be the start/end points (and maybe the 1 point adjacent to those).  The elevation value doesn't become the correct value that was set for those points when they are selected.

Is there anything that can be done to keep Outerra from crashing while having multiple Google services running? (In-game and out at the same time.  Usually maps.)  Other than, you know... closing them?

As far as I can tell from the crash reports, it's a memory problem. The browser running maps tends to use too much memory, and since it's running within the OT process that already takes a fair share, it can run out of virtual memory space.

A x64 build would help, but there seems to be a problem with the browser as well - it should just close itself instead of throwing a fatal error.

My W8 (64 bit, though I know Outerra isn't) says 8GB of virtual memory allocated...

Is whatever the problem is actually connected to using maps in Firefox as well?... or is it just the memory issue or something?  Or... is that just completely separate from using the in-game maps at the same time?  Doesn't seem separate to me because that's when it happens (as well as Google locking up in general).  When I'm using both.

Virtual memory is allocated per-process. If you think it's connected to other processes, then it may be a problem of the non-paged memory usage. It's used by drivers to allocate memory for communication with the GPU and other devices. Non-paged memory is a limited resource, and more apps using it can cause problems.

You can try to turn off GPU acceleration in Firefox. Also, with recent versions of Firefox (22-23) and with a Nvidia card I have experienced the Windows freezing hard several times, requiring reset, so I think there's definitely a problem with the GPU acceleration in there.

"Non-paged"... as in regular RAM or what?

I know I can't actually confirm that it's only with Google yet, but could it possibly a conflict/problem with Google servers/services (or something (API?)) locking up in this situation and not successfully sending me what I need to my one destination (computer) and multiple programs? idk... whatever.  :-\
