Title: PC annnndd laptop?
Post by: CaptJack92a on February 06, 2014, 11:51:59 pm
So Outerra works wonders on my desktop, but I don't know ho to get it working on my laptop. It's a windows 7 and not TOO old... Perhaps something in my data file can help find a solution?

It complains about opengl not being 'found' or something. Anyhow, here's my data.

No dedicated graphics card probably?  What graphics card do you have in your desktop?

2nd generation Intel graphics is not supported, because it does not support OpenGL 3.3 which is required by Outerra.
Your desktop has 3rd generation on-board GPU which works (with the latest drivers) but is quite slow. Unless you have a dedicated graphics card there too.

My desktop has dedicated graphics cards, the laptop I guess will just have to settle for minecraft.

So, fun work around. If you have Steam, opt into the In-home streaming beta. It allows you to stream your games from your desktop to any other computer.
I was messing around with Outerra on my EEE pc netbook last night, with high settings (all handled by my desktop), and almost instant response time user input. So, that's a way you can get it to work on your laptop. :)

Edit: I forgot to add that you will need to add Outerra as a non-steam game. Then it will be available for streaming.

Thanks! I'll see if I can get it running.

No problem man. :) You'll need steam on both your computers, and the beta invite for in home streaming might take awhile, as you first have to join the beta group community.  Here it is: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream)  After I joined it took maybe a week for my invite to show up.

No dedicated graphics card in the desktop either?  How well does it run?  :o

Oh yeah, I forgot to try Outerra with Steam streaming.  Was pretty crazy that I could technically play BF4 (with a little trickery) and Far Cry 3 at full resolution on a 10 year old laptop.... (though @15hz with 200-300ms latency, but I haven't tried since the last updates to it).

Steam-Streaming works like a charm! Well, a rough gem in need of some polish and shine. But it's good! I did want to work on the go, but this is fine since it allows me to work upstairs instead of down in the dark alone in the office.

Right. I meant program and play. Hehe...

But I've got a nice big plan for this engine. It's basically planet side 2, but more in the style of halo or star craft. And the whole world instead of a side... And space... And other planets...

It'll basically be the single largest open battle that has ever existed that included planetside and space combat and other world combat all at the same time.... In the same game. Obviously a long way off and a large goal, but I'm willing to "Work" toward it.
