Wo, that is great. I'm sure there are quite a few gifted programmers out there that could create more optimized hardware interfaces (drivers) then even the hardware developers themselves.

It the guys here at Outerra could do the same, imagine the detail which could be implemented without too over-taxing the hardware systems.

That's pretty cool.  I haven't really gotten into low level stuff like graphics languages yet, but I would say that this will affect all games/simulations.

Thanks for the link at AVSIM but this forum seems to be over-saturated... impossible to activate membership so far :-[

Ah sorry, yea avsim is rarely accessible for anonymous access nowadays. Here's an excerpt:

By the way, I don't know if you've already learnt about this, but both Microsoft and Khronos Group announced a few days ago that DirectX and OpenGL will go low-level in their next iteration (to compete with Mantle), and as a result, the CPU overhead will be massively reduced, providing huge performance benefits when you're CPU-limited or in a SLI/CrossFire configuration. Do you have plans to support that too?

(Modern) OpenGL actually doesn't need to do much to get on par with Mantle. Here's a tweet from our discussion about Mantle with OpenGL head at AMD: https://twitter.com/grahamsellers/status/383242587609395201

I totally agree with that, and OT profiling only confirms it. Mantle would still be a good thing if it was widely available and supported, as it allows to leverage some extra performance by people who know how (https://twitter.com/g_truc/status/409054369967910913) to work at that level, but those numbers compare mainly to DirectX and apps that currently lose performance in the driver overhead. OT would barely gain anything, though it could allow us to do some things more efficiently, mainly for better fluidity and better resource management. Here's where we count on OpenGL bringing some extra control in the future, and view Mantle more like a catalyst that can get some things moving.

DirectX has always had a much higher API overhead, so it's only good that Mantle can kick them into doing something about it. Though I guess it will be locked to Windows 9 because of all new driver model that for mysterious reason cannot apply to older Windows versions  ::)

Yeah i had the same problem. Luckyly I already have an AVSIM account. Weird though, I thought flight sims were a minority in respect to video games. Could be wrong though, i mean look at the Star Citizen community. I guess there are enough fans worldwide to stress a server or two.

There are approximately 130,000 members on that one flight sim forum, and there are several others.  ;)
