Title: Water textures & variations
Post by: Jonathan on March 05, 2014, 10:47:44 am
Just a couple suggestions here.

1- Make bodies of fresh water lakes have X-plane's style of water textures with accurate reflections.
2- Rivers should have color tones of murky to muddy.
3- Add accurate aqua marine water tones to certain oceans with reef reflections.

I've been thinking about things like that too, but considering the current rate of development and the tiny size of the team, plus the enormous amount of things that still need to be done, its probably going to end up that individual touches like that get handled later by the hoards of people that are going to have a creative frenzy once the engine reaches the state where things like that become user mod territory.

Well, actually Outterra does not use water textures (excluding surf texture).  The surface is all geometry/mesh with sort of sky/sun reflection.
Appearance of water color (and the somewhat too bluish tone) however can be altered via atmospheric settings in reducing beta rayleigh  settings among others. Keep in mind that sky color is also affected.
A "sky reflection amount/tone" slider in water settings would be appreciated.
Concerning reflections, angrypig wrote, there will be screen space reflections implemented.

Made a quick search to see what screen space reflection on water could look like looks anything like      http://youtu.be/0VrSXAHbCYk (http://youtu.be/0VrSXAHbCYk)

If its anything like this, that will be pretty incredible.

Yeah not surprised Crysis got that sussed. Its a beautiful game engine that one and I must admit the Crysis series of games were really awesome too, especially the first one and its natural atmosphere.
