Very tempting.....

Here's the full page btw
http://www.oculusvr.com/dk2/ (http://www.oculusvr.com/dk2/)
Definitely want more than ever, but I'm still gonna way for the consumer version.
Is this the Crystal Cove? What is it using for positional tracking with the camera if there isn't the white dots on it?
-
No it's not crystal cove but it must have most of the same features, it is interesting that there are no visible IR dots, but we can only assume it is using them or something equivalent or the IR camera is pointless.
-
Evil.. Too tempting to be good. TOO TEMPTING.
-
Actually, according to Kotaku, it is the Crystal Cove. Oh and as for the the positional tracking, I looked at the picture again and it looks like there's a black IR light panel in the top center perhaps?

So now you can't use your own camera?.... bs
-
I can understand the requirement. Can't rely on everyone/anyone to have a camera with the right specs and don't want people complaining that it isn't working as intended. They give you the camera included in the price so it isn't anything extra.
-
Awesome. I'm holding off until the consumer version though myself. Let everyone else pay for the R&D process hehehe ;D
I have my TrackIR too keep me entertained until then. 8)

Yes, but that is $50 more than the old kit.
-
The screen in it is 1080p and 5".. i would blame that more than the camera.
-
I get the feeling Oculus is going to have to get a move on given the recent announcement by Sony about their VR headset....
-
Why, the sony headset is for their own console and has an inferior FOV, Oculus are taking care of the PC market.
-
I hope Outerra will support the new positional tracking in the DK2 from day one. I ordered one and would love to play with it in Outerra.
Also, it would be nice if it is possible to set the default head position because in the MIG the head is too far backward.
By the way, DK2 != crystalCove. They both have a low persistence OLED screen (no blurring when you move your head) and positional tracking but they are not exactly the same. The DK2 still has the IR led's but they are hidden behind IR translucent plastic.
-
any thoughts on facebook buying Oculus? Personally I don't mind, I actually think it will improve the product.
-
I think this development is positive in the long run *if* Facebook doesn't go bust. The stock price trades higher then the entire GDP of New Zealand at the moment, which means it most likely is in a massive bubble.
But at least Oculus can now order a custom panel made to their own specifications as Palmer noted on Reddit.

Here is a link to the Occulus blog. http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/announcing-the-oculus-rift-development-kit-2-dk2/ (http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/announcing-the-oculus-rift-development-kit-2-dk2/)
If you scroll down a bit, you can see how the positional tracking is built into the headset.
As Elecman pointed out, the led's are hidden behind the plastic.
And this is what Mr. Luckey had to say about the camera on Reddit:
"Not a standard webcam at all, then. If someone told you that it was, they were mistaken.
I can't go into the technical details, but the camera was designed from the ground up for our motion tracking system, from the internal electronics to the 3D printed shell. A standard webcam cannot deliver high enough quality data, the closest comparison is professional-grade motion capture hardware."
About the acquisition of Oculus by Facebook, Mr. Luckey answers some questions about the possible consequences of the deal here: http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey (http://www.reddit.com/user/palmerluckey)
If i need a Cr*pbook, excuse me, Facebook account to log into the Consumer Version, and i will be bombarded with ads and other useless stuff, i won't buy it. I'm a bit disappointed about this, but i guess we'll see where this goes.
-
Well, its still a dev-kit version. Dont think they do such stuff to normal costumers when its ready. ... the cammera talk is interesting. Would be interesting to build an home-made motion track set-up whyte some of those, hope they get to sell them separately afterwards too ...
-
I hope the Facebook acquisition is a mere monetary one. We want to make money on your idea and have no part in its use. Please.
-
I hope so too.
The last thing the headset would need is "The Farmville Experience", or "Candy Crush 3D".
-
I was asked about it (among the other devs) by Gamasutra editor, quoted here here: http://gamasutra.com/view/news/213947/In_the_wake_of_Oculus_Facebook_deal_game_devs_ponder_whats_next.php (http://gamasutra.com/view/news/213947/In_the_wake_of_Oculus_Facebook_deal_game_devs_ponder_whats_next.php)
Speaking of the competition, here's one that revealed itself after this: http://www.trueplayergear.com/ (http://www.trueplayergear.com/)

I think this other hardware is some sort of fake, far too coincidental the timing of its appearance.

It doesnt seem to be much forward on its state anywhere aether ...
As for FB - you dont mean they do acquire Oculus, make it crash and get the tech/soft legals for cheap for their own bidding or sale for highest bidder somehow ? (or got added to the great hidden tech stash Teslas inventions disappeared for future unknowns)
-
Well Valve is supposedly working on one but no sight of that and based on the previous valve not showing us anything mantra.

Ah Valve ... theyr saving that for HL-3 ... that comes in 2015 ... well 2018 ... 2021 ... when Russians land an manned mision on mars. So they can play the multiplayer those 3 weeks of flight. ;)
-
It's kind of already been stated that they aren't making it for release. Of course, who knows really? There was an article from someone that said that it was better than the Oculus DK1, but probably not as good as Crystal Cove/DK2.
-
I just preordered the Dev kit 2, purely because I was bored and want to see what sort of potential this thing has. As an official nerd I suppose it is my duty to experience this first hand then blabber about it in an informative way later. So, the journey begins...

... DAMN ! We need a good-made drivable tank pretty soon, or the Norvegans take all the fun ! :D
-
Brano, have you ordered a DK2? And when/if can we expect outerra to support it? Anteworld is one of my favorite experiences with the dk1, and i can't wait to try it out with positional tracking and increased resolution :D
-
Our DK2 was supposed to arrive tomorrow, but tracking info asserts it went to Zurich instead :-\
Waiting for reply from Oculus support.
We are already looking at the SDK, but it was changed considerably and it may take us some time to adopt it into OT. Also, requirements like v-sync and low persistence only at 75Hz will make it harder to achieve consistent experience - I'm quite interested to see how it will work in OT.
-
Can't wait,
Flying the mig around was my personal favorite experience with my dk1. Good luck getting your rift!
-
Lets hope it's just a glitch in UPS's system:

Good to hear you're already looking in to it :) My dk2 is scheduled to arrive on friday^^
I tried to use the razer hydra for positional tracking with the dk1, but it was difficult to calibrate it correctly so it felt a bit wonky.
I'm especially looking forward to be able to lean in and see the instrument panels when flying the mig. (and hopefully not get nauseous so quickly)
Good luck getting it working!
-
My DK2 was waiting for me at home today, now just plugged it in and trying to set it up......excited :)
-
Good to hear it's being looked into! I think Outerra is one of the best/if not one of the coolest VR demos so far.
I'm sure you guys will figure something out.
I hope you get your headset cameni!
-
Patiently waiting for an update.
Who am I kidding, any word on integration??!?
:)
-
The DK2 SDK seems to have been rushed out too early. There are problems getting it to work with OpenGL at all. Hopefully there will be an updated version soon.
But it's going to take a while also because a lot has changed there and we need to customize the OT rendering pipeline for it.
-
Keep us updated the Dk2 community is ready to test.
-
SDK just got an update to 0.4.1
-
Got my DK2 in today... I so hope this will work guys :D
