Title: Variation in vegetation
Post by: 2eyed on May 29, 2014, 12:09:45 pm
Cameni, looking closer to the screenshot you made from PhytonPago's Ural, I might have seen more than one tree species. Will you bring this great progress to the masses = us? :D

Wow, that's a nice catch! Looking at the more recent pictures on their minus album (http://outerra.minus.com/ (http://outerra.minus.com/)), it seems that you are right !

Are the trees closest to the screen 3D? I can't say for sure.
It looks good though, either way.  :D

Yep, the trees are 3D o.O

I know that in Microsoft Flight, they used PhysX for tree collisions with apparently small overhead and to very good effect. On the other hand, X-plane to this day has no tree or building collisions.

I'm hoping for collisions.

I'm pretty sure there aren't 3D trees in those pictures.  However, we have seen 3D trees in the past.

Looking closer, I don`t think these are 3D trees.
The small bushes are not. The big pines might have a 3D trunk, but thats about it.
Also, they don`t cast shadows!

Not 3d, you can tell by comparing the same type of tree in the multiple pictures. Great to have variation though! I wonder if we will see different types in Different continents? Looking forward to this

Definitely not 3d but some seem to look as there were 4 faces (2 textures square) and not rotating. Well known from Flight simulator. Resolution isn't very high, so there is room for improvement. With replacement textures we could get them easily more realistic.

No, they are not 3D. These screens are actually from academic project that's going to show and compare the current and predicted future forest coverage and distribution of tree species in north-western USA. Right now it's using large species maps to compute what trees grow where, but we aim to generate the coverage procedurally using rules for individual species, based on temperature and precipitation ranges. Once that's done, it will be used in OT to get variety in vegetation that also conforms to bioclimatic rules.

I guess some simpler basic rules will be used initially to bring variety into the public version soon.

Amazing,I can't wait to see everything progress!
