Something isn't working. When I start Outerra a bunch of red errors show up at the bottom. OpenGL to do with clouds I think. I hit login and it says loading planetary data, then dies with a fatal error.

I've attached screenshots of the errors below.

Really hoping this is fixed since the new clouds sound amazing!

Still playing around, but looks great so far.

One problem: Clicking on "location" with the mouse does nothing. Fortunately clicking "F2" still works.  :)

Second unresolved issue: Still getting rhythmic hitching in Talkeetna and some other areas. (really hoping that goes away some day)

3rd Issue: Yellow Perf warning about the Cessna being "Blocked" for various amounts of time.

What GPU and driver version is it?

Thank you! I does show that the clouds are a work in progress, however just having them there brings so much more life into Outerra. What I'm personally most exited for are the lights, I have yet to try them out, but from what I can tell they should look awesome! The revamped location menu is also superb, user friendliness increased 150%.

Let me end with a question to you, the more experienced and tech-savvy users out there; what will this update yield in terms of modding options? What will it enable you to create? I imagine streets lights in the Alaska mod? :)

"What GPU and driver version is it? "

I have a GT 240, with what I think is the latest driver. Downloading the latest now so we will see if that makes any difference. It was working up until this update though.

EPIC UPDATE Cameni and co. !!!!

 ... have that location bar not opening by mouse too. Also, Urals gets blocked too for few milliseconds sometimes (mostly till 80ms).

  ...  GTX570 (347.25 version), intel core i5-2500 3.30Ghz ...

 P.S.: if ya post some details about light-source definition constants, ill be the happiest modder ever ! =D  Also, can we change the cloud-base height somehow ?

EDIT: ... i also found that textures we used as "illuminated" are now much more darker in night-time (no more lighted instruments panel details :O )

Also a little test with AntiAliasing :

interesting. so what are the input variables for add_spotlight_source?
Will be adding docs into wiki, but quickly:
    //@param offset model-space offset relative to the bone or model pivot
    //@param dir light direction
    //@param size diameter of the light source (reflector)
    //@param angle light field angle [deg]
    //@param edge soft edge coefficient, 0..1 portion of the light area along the edges where light fades to make it soft
    //@param color RGB color and intensity of the light emitter
    //@param fadeout time to fade after turning off
    //@param joint joint name to attach the light to (default empty string for body)

Can we change the cloud-base height somehow ?

Right now only through console (alt+c)
Code: [Select]
.bind e environment
e.set_cloud_params(5000, 2000)

First parameter being the base cloud altitude, the second is max height of clouds.

Looks that older Nvidia GPUs are using different (not updated) code paths in shaders, even though drivers are new. We'll have to test it with an older Nv card.

Thank you very much for the work! I'm so happy right now  ^-^

My only concern is that I can't make screenshots with F8 key, they are not saved in the proper folder.
Oops, I just apparently changed data folder before. Everything works perfectly so far.

Awesome!!!!

But uh.... How do I select multiple waypoints or a whole road again?...  :-[

Also, when using the map overlay, could the road selection outlines show 100% no matter what the transparency is set to?  And maybe they could be thicker as well.

Dang... It sure is hard to roll the truck now.... At least where I am... But I finally pulled it off in the steepest part of town.  :P  But of course I fell through the ground.  :facepalm:

How do you turn on your headlights? Is it already implemented (i.e. by pressing a button) or do I have to fiddle with scripts?

I noticed I wasn't using the "right" vehicle. No wonder L didn't work! I always drive the bus and the bus only. Switching to the truck did the trick ;) Looks good! Although I think it needs more of a yellowish tint for the sake of realism. I don't think old russian(?) trucks use LED:s  ^-^. I'm Looking forward to late night cliff tours once the bus has working headlights aswell.

Cloud system? Did you update your GPU/OpenGL drivers? I have an NVIDIA 560M, but both the drivers and OpenGL were out of date.

Here is the NVIDIA Driver Downloads page, just specify your GPU and the download includes the most recent OpenGL version.

  • default tire lateral slip coefficient changed from 0.5 to 0.8 (better turning)
Is it the reason why vehicles begin to drift when driving at 20 km/h?

Cloud system? Did you update your GPU/OpenGL drivers? I have an NVIDIA 560M, but both the drivers and OpenGL were out of date.

Here is the NVIDIA Driver Downloads page, just specify your GPU and the download includes the most recent OpenGL version.

Awesome update!

Also, I hope in the future we'll be able to land aircraft on top of watercraft. On the USS Nimitz's flight deck for example:

(http://i.minus.com/iGfOj4WViHG4U.jpg)

Are there any plans for this feature? Or is it already possible with the current collision support?

Hello,

 I've only discovered Outerra this past week and, so far I'm very excited and blown away by it! However, I have an issue with the new update.. TrackIR does not work. Has support for it been removed? The TrackIR dll that was in the previous version is not present in the plugin folder, and when I tried to add it Outerra would not load it. If TrackIR will not work in this version , is it possible to revert to the last version and stop it automatically updating to this newer version of the game?

Thank you to anyone who can help. As I said I'm very new to this and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I would love to get TrackIR to work as it adds so much more immersion to me ( I don't have Oculus yet!)

Nvidia 88xx, 98xx and 2xx owners:

The problem is that old 2xx Nvidia cards do not support the required fp64 OpenGL extension, which is needed by the cloud renderer. For now try disabling clouds in world.cfg (clouds=false), until we provide a workaround for it

Otherwise - great update! Really very much appreciated.
Hopefully, we don't have to wait again four months for the next update. It was a so long time. :D

Attached a screenshot how it actually looks like now, any suggestions how to enjoy the world in full beauty again?  :(

That's not a problem of this update, but of a bug in newer AMD drivers on 5/6 series of GPUs. Last Catalyst that worked ok was 14.4, I think.

Great, GREAT update. Period.

I love, and I use the word LOVE, how the clouds are lightened from below and are colored in those red and orange hues, like in those rare yet sooooo beautiful real-life sunsets (there is even a word for that in spanish, "candilazo", see this: http://goo.gl/b0e0Z1).
I think this is the first time I see that effect reproduced in real time in any game engine, and to think that it is in this beloved engine, in this beloved world, is just beautiful.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Keep up the good work, guys.

Could someone please explain to me why can't I see any clouds? Do I need to turn them on somewhere (haven't seen any settings to do so). So no clouds for me :( Even when I do alt+left/right/up/down nothing changes aside from time of day.
Thanks for your replies in advance guys!

PS: no wonder I don't have clouds, my outerra isn't updating! It's still at .388 update, or something like that :( How do I rectify that guys, how do I make it update itself? It searches for updates and then just skips it....
Where can I download just the patch and install it manually? Thanks

Edit: Ok, it seems I fixed it now. thanks anyways guys!

There seems to be an undocumented variable for pointlight between offset and color.

Will Outerra be getting emissive materials? I tried layering transparent and base materials with a giant light inside to light all the windows but it didn't work.
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.5179
Post by: cameni on February 01, 2015, 07:43:31 am
That one is unused size variable that got there by mistake and will be removed.

Emissive textures are in the works, some pipeline changes to make it more efficient in combination with normal materials.

A couple of remarks:

  • It seems a bit strange that day of year or even time flow multiplier settings are in the camera controls window.
  • If you click on "Term of use" in the Map of this menu, the openned window cannot be closed, potentially locking the user.

It doesn't totally work for me. Sometimes It takes me to the location I request, but often it simply changes the camera view or does nothing at all.

thank you :). location browser is hopefully, the first one of many new ui components that will be created using the new ui framework. at first we would like to release just a couple of standalone dialogs with some kind of desktop management and later also new object / terrain editing tools. everything takes some time as it is built from scratch not using the old ui components, but we hope that it will make the editing easier.

  • It seems a bit strange that day of year or even time flow multiplier settings are in the camera controls window.

as soon as we have the desktop ready we will most probably split these two dialogs into several separate dialogs / panels. f.e. location, daytime, camera settings. currently it was more important for us to test the framework than to make it look perfect. i guess that even in the future we will focus more on functionality than perfection. but the commets are alway welcome!

  • If you click on "Term of use" in the Map of this menu, the openned window cannot be closed, potentially locking the user.

this is a known issue, that will be hopefully addressed by the new chromium integration (angrypig). currently it is possible to close the window by pressing ctrl+f4

The new shiny lights do not render correctly in stereo 3d mode. E.g. there are single eye repetitions on left and right of the screen.
Beside the SSAO med and high settings (which are heavily viewing angle dependant) the only issue with stereoscopic mode.

Edit: The headlights only show up in one eye and grass is not lit properly until a certain distance from cam to vehicle.

The clouds looks incredible for being the first alfa version!! I cant think how they will be in the future, with more resolution and more than 100 Km. They will blow minds..

The lights are great too.

By the way about lights. Would be posible to make long shots lights?
The cars actually have like a short light real cars have. Would be posible Increase the power and distance to cover, like the long lights car? So we can drive fast at nights :)  and also make those lights more visible since long distances.

You'd just simply make ones with narrower angle and higher intensity; the range is computed automatically from that.

Now my problem is that i dont know what to change exactly xD. I was seeing your first post talking about parameters, and i saw the parameters on sm11.js .  I was touching all the numbers, i got bigger lights and some more but not more powered or wide angle, etc.

Anybody knows which numbers are for what exactly? If can put in black or so, which is the angle for make more wide, the power, etc.

Probably you are already aware of it, but here are some glitches when going underwater. I wasn't quite sure if I should report it here or create a new thread in terrain issues board.

Speaking of Underwater, I've recently visited the Marianas trench, and as soon as there is something submersible with some mega-bright lights, I'm going down there to take a look.......

Seaquest Dsv!  :) :facepalm:

Now my problem is that i dont know what to change exactly xD. I was seeing your first post talking about parameters, and i saw the parameters on sm11.js .  I was touching all the numbers, i got bigger lights and some more but not more powered or wide angle, etc.
The parameters are documented in the wiki (http://xtrac.outerraworld.com/wiki/vehicle). Intensity is part of the color.

Delete the parameter in-between the position float3 and color/intensity float3, like so: (EDITED)
this.add_pointlight_source({x:-0.27,y:5.47,z:2.56}, 0.1, {x:0.585,y:.08,z:0.012}, 1.0); //Light 3

You need to use an older version of Catalyst drivers (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/amd-catalyst-14-4-whql-%2814-100-april-17%29-download.html).

Quote from: Cameni
That's not a problem of this update, but of a bug in newer AMD drivers on 5/6 series of GPUs. Last Catalyst that worked ok was 14.4, I think.

Did you revert to an older version (or Windows or an antivirus did it for you)? Check the eng.log, what version it prints. New versions added tags into objects, so you seem to have new files but an old exe. If so, run the patch (http://planet.anteworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.8.3.4883.patch-5179.exe) manually.

You can always look at the unofficial Omega drivers (think thats what they call em) which are custom drivers for allot of older cards. They tend to pick the best DLLs and combine them into a driver pack for people to download. Is it GURU3D website that has them? not sure.

Version 0.8.4.5233

This version checks if textures from loaded model contain all mipmaps, and if not, it fills in the missing levels with some debug color (pink) or some default normal values. If you see something that changes material properties in constant distance from the camera, that's likely the result.

Missing mipmaps are a performance problem, so we decided to provide a visual warning.

Version 0.8.4.5233
  • workaround for purple terrain driver bug on old ati cards and newer catalyst drivers
  • updated MiG - lights, simple engine glow, additional skins (CZ, RU) - many thanks to Uriah for providing these
  • added open "location from image" into F2 location dialog, to load GPS info from photos
  • fixed spotlight orientation vector (was unable to point in Z direction)
  • fixed crash on v (change seat) key
  • missing texture mipmaps replaced with pink textures + warning
  • fixed perf problem in F2 advanced options

So, exporting textures whyte mipmaps from gimp is now a necessity ... kinda interesting how different stuff changes them at different distances on the model :

Seems it can't launch the downloaded update. Check if the update is in your home directory, normally in c:\users\name\outerra\update
Some overprotective antivirus programs will lock it and remove before it can be launched.

Also, if you have a high UAC protection level that prevents programs from making changes, updater can't install the update by itself and will fail. In that case run the update manually.

Only if I add a command line switch to it, to do nothing if the texture already has mipmaps. We already added some special filters to it that are used in OT.
But it also needs to know if it's color/normal.

Hmm, or...

You can use dds converter 1.4, or dds converter 2.1

I usually use  1.4 coz have the 'power of two' option (can destroy ur aspect ratio image, but if u are in a hurry, or have square textures is great)...
Dds converter 2.1 dont have it, but have the posibility of convert dds to another too. So in this case, convert all the dds in png (so can keep the alfa if necesary), and then convert all the png back into dds with mipmaps activated should do the trick.
Just divide between dds type, for example dxt1, dxt5, or ati1 in diferent folders.

Made a quick test . I draged and drop dds with and without mipmap through nv compress. It didnt change anything to the ones that already had mipmap and it did add mipmap to the ones that didn't have them.

Yes but when you do not specify a type, it will default to DXT1, so it will convert your possibly other DXT formats to it.
But here, an experimental version that preserves the format when none is specified: nvcompress.exe (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2spgr2B2dvNRDFGUmcxTnV5a2s/view?usp=sharing)

Looks like that new nvcompress work perfectly with all type of dds. I  tested 3dc, dxt5nm an ATI2n with no mipmap and it added mipmap flawlessly. i passed the result (that has a mipmap) in nvcompress again and it didnt change anything.

Paint.net has a mipmaps option on its DDS exporter and it's free. It can also do batch openings & saves if you search your packages folder for *.dds.

Spotlights with z:1 orientation show up as black squares for me.

Not sure about the grass, but I tweaked a bit the athmo settings (reducing scattering and changing some other stuff). The sceney thread is here (http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=2855.0) but you should wait for the next update to test it, many models are broken ATM  :(

  • fixed spotlight orientation vector (was unable to point in Z direction)
It may sound weird, but that bug was actually a very nice feature for me.

When I was using the Z direction, the meshes were illuminated only by the diameter of the light source, and the reflector wasn't visible neither. This was great for the cockpit lights, mainly because the lights were not reaching the ground.

Edit: Here's a screenshot taken in the previous version, where you can see the cockpit illuminated, but the ground is not:
(http://i.minus.com/iJO9Dm69nNBji.jpg)

Now it's great you fixed the Z direction, but would be nice to have something similar to that bug, or even better, having some kind of filter to tell the light source to only illuminate certain surfaces/meshes/materials, or just to not illuminate the terrain.

Also, there's a method in geometry object interface(geomob) called set_scale, where you can set the scale of the entire object. But is there a way to only scale a sub-object/joint?

I identified the source. My spotlights have a narrow field (30 degrees) and upping that seems to fix it. Pre-update I already had to lower intensity so it wasn't blinding everything. Putting it higher is a temporary fix but a minimum value of ~50 is rather high for general use.

Took a half hour before I came to check the update thread and saw that there actually had been a new one affecting the bloom.

We are making some space in the data so that there can be also a distance limit on the light range, so this will be possible this way.

No, it's problematic because of how it affects some precomputed things in the hierarchy, and it would complicate the pipeline.

I had not to stop Comodo, but avoid it to start (msconfig) -may be the case with your antivirus- and run OT as administrator.

Might be an old outerra.exe in memory, or you do not have administrator rights (needed for installing into program files). The patcher should automatically ask for admin privileges though ...

We are making some space in the data so that there can be also a distance limit on the light range, so this will be possible this way.
That's great for interior/cockpit lights, but there still being a problem. Let's take as an example the landing lights on an aircraft. When those lights are behind the cockpit, you have to limit the source diameter, otherwise the lights will illuminate the cockpit. Will be there a way to avoid that, maybe by casting dynamic shadows from the spotlights?

Ah by the way, I've found a way to illuminate the cockpit without casting any light on the ground, and it's working very very nice. :) Some screens here (http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=3140.msg34260#msg34260).
The spotlights are set up like this:
Code: [Select]
this.add_spotlight_source({x: 0.000,y:4.250,z:1.250}, {z:1}, 50, 179.5, 1, {x:0.025,y:0.1,z:0.00}, 0.1); //Main light
this.add_spotlight_source({x: 0.221,y:4.743,z:0.899}, {z:1},  5, 179.9, 1, {x:30.00, y:10,z:0.00}, 0.1); //Gauge Light#0

Quote
No, it's problematic because of how it affects some precomputed things in the hierarchy, and it would complicate the pipeline.
Oh, alright. No need for complications then.

Also, when you run the patch, does Windows ask you for a permission? Does running the patch as administrator (right click Run as Administrator) change anything?

Hi there!

I have two issues:

1.- When I fly straight ahead everything looks right, but if I turn around, let's say 90º + , all the terrain detail is gone and takes more than 1.5 seconds to load completely (Terrain quality metrics: 1080 p;  Max texture resolution: medium. These are the settings I been using since installed OT, and have worked fine).

2.- I tried to record a video to show the first problem, but .y4m files are 0 kb.

Can't say for shure when this problems started, because I haven't used OT (for playing) for awhile, till tonight.
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.5233
Post by: cameni on February 22, 2015, 02:27:14 am
1080p is usually too much, and terrain tile cache can't keep up.
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.5233
Post by: KW71 on February 22, 2015, 10:46:46 am
Made a clean install just to check.

-Screen res: 1080p, 60hz.
-Terrain res: 600
 The problem is still there.

-Screen res: 720p, 60hz.
-Terrain res: 1080
 No problem at all.

I still can't record videos after the reinstall (and changed the HD target).
-  *.y4m are 0 kb
-  *.wav have a logic size, but are corrupted
so the converter starts and stops.

Terrain quality depends on the resolution, for higher res you need more memory to have terrain of the same pixel quality. That makes it non-linear, so maybe we should change that to always be constant, as it's causing these types of issues.

No idea why you can't capture videos, please post your eng.log file.

Moving to Video Recording thread.

EDIT:

The terrain problem I mentioned is also FOV related. I had 60º; when i returned to 85º+ the problem decreased.

Yes, narrower FOV requires more detailed terrain data to be loaded for new views, and much of it has to be discarded when you turn away and regenerated.

I couldn't help but notice that Outerra is caching all that is in the Packages directory, could there be a commandline function for disabling caching of packages assets, so that someone can edit the mtl/script or even model/texture files and simply replace the model in-engine without having to restart Outerra.

This would help ALLOT for us modelers/scripters who are constantly learning things by feel. Having to reload Outerra after the slightest adjustment of package files is quite annoying. Setting this directory as 'ALWAYS refresh/reload data' would make things ALLOT easier!

Edit.... What am I saying. I do all my testing on flightgear as its easier to access the jsbsim property tree.

I completely agree with you PRiME! Though, you can reload the .js script with ALT+R if you edit the file externally, I always do it this way.

I've recently discovered that the FDM on aircraft can be reloaded as well without restarting the engine, by simply respawning the aircraft. Still not very practical, but I guess it's better than restarting Outerra.

Atm, the materials are the biggest pain for me, lots of restarts 'till I'm happy with the results...
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.5233
Post by: PRiME on February 26, 2015, 07:42:15 am
ALT+R will be handy, however disabling the caching of the packages directory and forcing engine to load the assets for each new vehicle instance will pretty much make all other workarounds redundant. Would seem to be the easiest solution IMO

Angrypig's working on support for package reloading right now. Instances only refer to package assets and their own instance data, it's not that package is cached and copied to each instance, so we need to reload whole packages or their modified assets. There's some problem with that at the moment, but we need to resolve it so that a material editor can be made in-game.

Awesome! Can't wait to have an in-game material editor. That will be very nice, as well as the support for in-package geometry instancing.

Is that why spawning the same model more than once causes them to share the same variables? i.e. when I spawn 2 identical cars and use an action button to do something like lower a window the other car's window gets lowered by the same amount

Partly, but that's because the script is buggy. Global variables in the script are shared among all instances (you may want to have that for constants, engine parameters etc). Instance specific variables have to be declared as instance members, i.e. this.windowpos = ...

Version 0.8.4.5372

Spotlight reflector lighting was adjusted so that the reflectors are better visible; previously you had a light that strongly illuminated ground but the reflector itself shone only weakly. Some vehicles will have to be adjusted.

add_spot_light/add_point_light - see t817.js for an example; you can specify intensity or range or both. If you specify just the range or just the intensity, the other value is computed automatically. If you specify both, you'll get unrealistic lighting that can nevertheless be useful when you want to have a higher intensity but a limited range.

Cameni, sorry but... did you change the rocks patterns??  Or just the textures? Now look 1000% more natural! I see a diferent pattern, i would say, less complex pattern, Now the erosion look more natural. I checked in the mountains near my place, also in himalayas, everest. I remember how they look before and now look much more natural.
What did you change exactly, only color made that big improve?

Its like colour is better adjusted, and not generating complex and crazy patterns. Also rocks now are not all the same color, like in one big piece, have little variations, like composed with many little rocks. So this make much more natural rocks.

I am reseeing again.. And i am totally sure.. I am seeing Everest. Before was a mountain really looking ugly.. Now looks like a real mountain!!
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.5372
Post by: cameni on March 26, 2015, 04:03:36 pm
The main change is that rocks are now taking color from the biome color map when there's little vegetation, otherwise they tend to be a lighter grayish color when there's more greenery around. Color and vegetation maps aren't perfectly matching, sometimes the color map is green in places but the vegetation map asserts that nothing is growing there. Because of that the formula for getting the rock color is a bit of heuristic magic :)

Cameni, it seems you really touch some magic key.. Those mountains look like mountains now. Of course they can have more erosion, etc, for being so tall mountains, but atleast look much better now than before. They look more real.
I always had the thinking, the textures and colors in mountains was not matching perfect with the mesh, and sometimes it was something messy. Not natural

You know what they only need now? A new snow layer, or ice layer, that can get in action in some heigh you can configure, in adition with the normal snow we have now. This ice layer can have the ability of keep in the rocks in almost 90º angles. And being ice in high altitude, can be a bit diferent from the snow, more blue, etc.
Then we would have the himalayas almost like real.
I have a list of ideas that i want to post soon. So i will add this idea too )))

Now when i open Outerra i can see the car inside very good most of the times.
And i am using a modest 2 in exposure. When before sometimes for see the car inside i needed to choose 3 or 4, or go to "catch" some snow with alt-f8 .. So all faces not affecting by the sun directly was much more clear..
This is one of the problems in ilumination..  Also, another aspect was when the night was coming. So the ground was too dark. Now it seems is also ok..
I also dont know if now the glow is not so big. Or if i changed something in the config..

One problem remaining in light aspect, is when the sun go totally. Then the ground is totally black. Should not be black like that.

So now i dont know if was casuality a lot of times did good.. But usually before, always i needed tricks for get this light inside, catching with alt-f8 in a very clear place like snow.
For be honest, now i cant push alt. I though was broke in my keyboard, but the problem is only in outerra. Dont know if its a Bug. Sometmes i cant co forward in ufo mode when the angripig error appear.

For me, it looks like not only rock colors have changed but also rock shape. No more or less bulged and overhanging rocks.
Ouch, I forgot to remove a debug value that disabled the rock displacement.

Those mountains are looking soooo natural.. For me they are lovely! I dont know if would be good if u touch more displacements now, when it seems u found the G point of the mountains xDD

Displacement doesn't alter the colors, and it adds small scale detail and makes overhanging rocks.

Maybe i abuse of you. But could you put a close up pic of the Everest and Lhotse like i put? It seems you got a natural mix of rock colors anyway with the displacement or not.

To displace or not to displace. This is the question. :D
To me, with displacement it looks better as it adds more detail. But how about a slider for displacement rocks. It would give us greater variety and everyone just could adjust to his/her personal likings.
In general I'd like to have much more sliders for everything e.g. for wave/surf height, grass height, grass broadness, water sky reflection color, amount of daisies... ;) to create a unique appearance.

Time of global sliders will soon end ;)

There will be parameter tables for individual rock and soil types, but then it can be easily misbalanced and gotten out of the sane region into a land where various optimization hacks rear their ugly heads.
It's a delicate job :)

I'm looking forward about that announcement! But since there is, for example, no one "right" water or one "right" sky, I believe in sliders or customization for things like ToD settings etc. I suppose you could see it different, Cameni, because you are a mathematical mind.

Cameni i forgot to say before ur update. Would be posible in the next you add the reset car button alt+r configurable in the buttons? So we can add this button in the joystick.  With that, driving will be much better so when you bounce you dont need to have the keyboard near and push (for more tragedy, i usually push alt-e and then the bounce take me to the moon while i close console with mouse and reset the car properly xD).   Thanksss and nice update, Rocks colors look much better now

In theory easy, though there are other parts that may need porting. We try to keep it portable for the future.
A Linux version is actually required by some of our customers, so it will eventually happen.

MfG.

Haha didn't noticed this one :D "Lorem ipsum" is a standard placeholder text (correct word spacing of of normal text), based on a Cicero text, so I guess it's an UI test. This may be really practical to locate a vehicle at long distance...

It wasn't a permanent fix, just a verification that it indeed is the cause. We'll enhance the detection of the sRGB bug.

Seems OpenGL is VERY sensitive to driver updates? or is AMD/Nvidia just not paying attention to OpenGL enough in their code?

The latter; not many game companies are using newer OpenGL features. In our development we hit and reported many driver bugs, because we were apparently first to use them. It's much better now though.

In this case it's a problem in sRGB handling, where some texture sampling calls do the color conversion to linear space and some don't.
On our 5770 card it doesn't show, so it's just some AMD cards from older series and some driver versions.

It's a vehicle script so it will require to transform the object in a vehicle (like what Levi did with the wind turbine). I'm not sure if these will work without being activated (placed by the player or entered after being placed as static objects).

You should be able to fix the problem by reloading the road (select it and click "make"). If it's not working, try to increase the transitional area of several nodes of the road, or move their elevation a bit. The update fix is only working on new roads :)

What kind of error? Please check the update.log, should be in the user home dir\outerra

We are aiming for a summer release a new version with completely reworked sandbox editor, making it much more usable and extensible. Pasto (http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?action=profile;u=337) is promising a video for this week showing the upcoming sandbox functionality. Also including a better object browser.

Apart from that various functionality bits in vehicles and aircraft, including a way to attach and fire rockets and projectiles. Hopefully also a new configuration UI for controls will be completed with that, allowing us to finally release the extended controls.

On the domestic PC, Linux only accounts for 1% but in industry and business, Linux is everything. and surely when it is developed outerra or entering the entrepreneurial business,, you need this conversion.
The phrase :
The computer clock Linus Torvalds is not synchronized with the world. It is the world that is synchronized with the computer Linus Torvalds: grin:
I have no doubt that this is so.
I imagine it will come in time .. nobody said the world was made in a day.
Of course,, this is my opinion ... and I must say,,, worthless. :)

Note the first feature film produced success in servers GNU / Linux was Titanic in 1997.
James Cameron also chose servers with GNU / Linux to produce the film Avatar.

Please fix the installer/updater.

the game does not start from few updates before. enters in login and tries to re download latest version and restarts to login then it starts over.

I deleted the game folder and the folder from user files. redownloaded the installer, nothing.

I don't think is the first time when this happens.

it's a bit of a let down to have such lame installer that can't figure out how to update or clean install so it doesn't fall miserably on its own nose.

Hi zaelu,

Are you deleting all associated files and installing a clean version? http://planet.anteworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.8.4.5372.exe

After installing 5372 and logging in again, what version does it update to before becoming stuck in an update loop?

I might suggest using uninstall.exe in the Anteworld folder, and after that try deleting the build and data folder. Also trying installing both the build and the data directory to completely new locations.

Also try deleting eng.cfg and world.cfg files located in your data directory (Users/YourName/Outerra/) and restarting OT.

I have never had a problem with updates, and have installed OT on many different machines. If you continue to have issues, please post your Windows version, GPU/driver/OpenGL version, and you can upload your eng.log file here after running the update.

Best regards,
Uriah

In the output log it's saying the method doesn't exist

Quote
ERROR: vehicle::init_chassis: C:/Users/Simon/Outerra/packages/Gallente/gca1/Nyx.js(171): TypeError: Object [object Object] has no method 'add_pointlight_source'

example line

Quote
//invoked only the first time the model is loaded, or upon reload
function init_chassis(param){

this.add_pointlight_source({x:xOffset + 41.934,y:yOffset + 1674.4185,z:zOffset + 15.1298}, {x:178,y:342,z:336}, 0.01);

If I comment out the pointlights it goes on to say the spotlight method also doesn't exist.

zzz,

Those are the old light methods, and should be replaced with the new ones which include extended parameters for better control of the lights.

Code: [Select]
var cockpit_spot =  {x:0.2,y:0.2,z:0.26};
  var cp = {color:cockpit_spot, angle:80, size:0.05, edge:0.99, range:0.9, intensity:0.01, fadeout:0.1};
  this.add_spot_light({x:-0.432,y:2.041,z:0.059}, {z:-0.754, y:-.656}, cp);  //_Frontal panel light 1 (from left to right)

Code: [Select]
var cockpit_indicators =  {x:0.0,y:0.1,z:0.013};
  var ci = {color:cockpit_indicators, size:0.005, range:0.1, intensity:0.01, fadeout:0.0};
  this.add_point_light({x:0.366,y:2.02,z:-0.06264}, ci); //Light 7 Pitch/Roll Indicator - Point

I install this version from your link

Anteworld-0.8.4.5372.exe

I install it with both folders (install folder and settings cache folder from user files) deleted

first it starts it shows this!

after I click on login and tries to download new version etc it goes to here:

after that it just repeats.

We can see the end numbers doesn't make sense. Although I install 5372 it starts as 5525 and tries to install 5377... oh and the thread is named 5819 :D

I'm not sure if this is exactly what we're talking about here, but I always restart again after an update completes.  I noticed a long time ago that it seems to behave like the updates didn't even go through after the auto-restart (not to mention other things happening like it not setting the correct full-screen resolution) and I just got in the habit of restarting it again manually after each update.  Restarting BEFORE I hit login again.

That did it! No other reinstall needed, I just made the little squares disappear from those options and it worked. Dunno why those folders where not fully writable by Outerra... it made them and I have UAC on min (win7 64).

Thanks.

Great update Cameni and the rest of the guys behind this baby!

There are some issues with some "old" vehicles that worked before as usually but all in all is working great for me.

I "went to the Moon" and can't wait to see it once the procedural data is included so we can also land in it. The vistas from there while looking at the Earth are almost like those old real photos taken from the Moon.

Amazing work.  ;)

Great! I've had this UAC problem when installing the data folder at the same place as the program, so I figured out something similar may have happen to you.

*

Now, I managed to test this new update, and so far it's amazing. I think the wind slider is maybe a bit too generous (at 240 m/s, I don't think any tree will resist, a tornado goes up to 130 m/s...).
I did a quick test with the new editor and it was glorious. It will take some time to get used to it, and I need to check but it seems like majority of object related keyboard shortcut have changed, but it was a blast. And if you need to know why it's a big change, here is a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4duN8suCX4

You can do it in a more clever, clean way, but it's just a quick example.

Thanks a lot guys, it's really a big change for scenery creation  :)

That wind speed value is for the wind gradient height, the speed is much lower at the ground level. We'll add informative value for 10m height there to avoid this confusion.

I am another who is missing shadow intensity so much! So I am happy was just accidentally omited :)  I hope you can re-add again very soon.
In fact i was about to ask. Would be posible increase the maximum value? Lets say 8 or 10 (double).
For people who like very soft shadows and good visibility in shadow places is great (90% time i use it in 5, maximum).

Also, i loved the trees colours and now they are almost totally black. Dont know if its conected with shadow intensity lack, or its something more?

Anyway, this little thing, and a fail not saving your settings in enviroment after you close and reopen the engine (at least in my case), its a great update!

Yes it's a nice update, and I also think trees are too dark in general (they have been always for me). They got  even darker with all the shading applied to them though. Maybe we could have a command or slider to lighten them up.

With regard trees and their colour..

In spring new leaves are bright light green, then as the leaves mature the green becomes darker. Following on from this stage high winds and weather damage the leaves and the overall green of the tree darkens with a steady increase of dark browns... Then autumn arrives with the reds which again darken with into browns...

Just a thought...

Since there are no seasonal variations in color implemented yet, this may not be the point. It's the brightness level of trees that seem to be a bit on the dark side, often not corresponding well with the surrounding grasslands. Also shady areas like under trees often get too dark.

Not sure exactly how many lines it should have. You can always save backup, then delete world.cfg and or eng.cfg and restart OT and those files will be freshly generated. This can help so solve many issues which are obvious.

After using the Google Maps overlay for a while I get a "not enough space in image cache" error or something like that and the UI stops being visible.

F117A is the only thing that gives me error.
Ilyushin - Corby starlet and A320 work well.
"try installing again"

The ilyushin has throttle controls that are now outside the plane, The corby has problems with visible flaps and all the planes now seen to "wallow" pretty badly in any sort of turn. Just looking at the update description, I don't see what would be causing this. And Levi doesn't seem to be around as much, so it might take a while to pin things down.

I only tried the flaps, but now that comets're right, it's broken.
I did notice error in the controls, and I said, but no one commented, so I thought I only had the error.
it feels like,,, frustrated, but we get used to these things, I just know that as you wash the dishes, do so with care and respect, but still will continue breaking.
it is not necessary to share this view,, but surely will agree rejoice when we see Levy

Controls outside the plane are likely because the scripts are using non-normalized axis in rotations, which causes the resulting rotation to do unexpected things.

Google maps eat tons of memory. In eng.cfg there's img_cache_num_slices - you can enlarge that (a bit).

Well, Interestingly I guess, sometimes it says those dimensions, sometimes it says my resolution.  I believe it first showed me 850x60 (I think) while I was in the middle of using the full overlay, and then the next time it happened after restarting, it showed my resolution.  I don't know if that matters or makes a difference or if something else is going wrong to make it hit the limit faster (though it does sure seem like accidentally backing out of the map overlay and having to re-open it makes it happen a lot quicker).

How can I change the water level now? I cant find it.  :-[

Planet-specific settings have been moved from world.cfg to planet.cfg, which is not saved because of a bug.
You can create planet.cfg in data/earth/planet.cfg and put the following there:

Code: [Select]
name = "Earth",
comment = "SRTM 90m compilation",
sun =  (sun_params) {
betaRM =  (float4) {
x = .0058,
y = .017,
z = .041,
w = .004
},
sun_color =  (float3) {
x = 1.0,
y = 1.0,
z = 1.0
},
intensity = 25.0,
ground_reflectance = .08,
exposure = 3.5,
shadow_light = 1.0,
scattering = .5
},
waterfog =  (waterfog_params) {
sea_level = 0.0,
fog_level = 0.0,
half_depth =  (float4) {
x = .33,
y = 1.6,
z = 3.8,
w = 20.0
},
scattering =  (float4) {
x = .005,
y = .005,
z = .005,
w = .005
}
},
forest =  (forest) {
ecs_min =  (float3) {
x = 0.0,
y = -.05,
z = .03
},
ecs_max =  (float3) {
x = 6000.0,
y = 1.0,
z = .3
},
ecs_trans =  (float3) {
x = 500.0,
y = .1,
z = .2
},
threshold = .4,
aspect = .4
},
snow =  (virtual_elevation) {
virtelev =  (float2) {
x = 3500.0,
y = 0.0
},
virtcurv = 2500.0,
snowmin = 4900.0,
snowsat = 6000.0
},
clouds =  (cloud_params) {
base = 3000.0,
height = 4000.0
}

And change what you want.

when desintalas Outerra, and install the version 0.8.4.5372 Anteworld-back and gives this error:
(https://www.imageshost.eu/images/2015/08/28/capturada.jpg)
meaning or better ... as I solve?
 I know it's a problem of AMD, using Catalyst Control Center, but can not eliminate all components AMD,, that program had to remove all components AMD?
I used the DDU,, solved and it worked
Note: Your drivers are bugged out or the install/update got botched. :o
Another recommendation. If your motherboard is old you must update the BIOS and walking by the net a llamanda malware LightEater infecting the BIOS, creating what is known as SMM, where they write new instructions into the kernel of the BIOS and then sent to the processor making your PC die in the act, it will not start anymore

Apart from that various functionality bits in vehicles and aircraft, including a way to attach and fire rockets and projectiles. Hopefully also a new configuration UI for controls will be completed with that, allowing us to finally release the extended controls.

Will this be coming soon or are we facing another 3 month gap?

Changes:
Version 0.8.4.5819 (20 Aug 2015)
  • new scenery editor on alt-F1 (alpha)
  • support for basic vector rivers (not persistent yet)
  • new weather settings in F11, cloud coverage, wind settings
  • wind affecting aircraft, grass, tress ...
  • sunlight and moonlight levels modulated by adjustable cloud cover
  • monochromatic rendering in low light conditions to simulate human eye
  • moon model (not procedural yet), correct position and phase, affects night lighting levels
Awesome. Few suggestions:

1) New Scenery - really would like to see inport/export (share) option there.
2) Wind Settings - location based realtime weather (so getting online METARs and TAFs). Optionally importing them.
3) Sunlight/Moonlight - Have been waiting for night lights. But a bit disappointed - no moonlight shadows.
And more important night exposure is too dark (Fully understand that exposures probably very accurate).
So really would like to see eye sensitivity adjustments. Like automatic Exposure (aperture).
That would probably bring even more realism.

Apart from that - thanks for update.
Really enjoy to see new features.

I'm sure he meant mig29.

You will need to replace ah64.js script in Anteworld/packages/outerra/ah64

Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/view/tf5rkwb2kvfz2b8/ah64.js

Forced strict mode seems to be applied to the second entity instance, which means all of the global and local variables must be declared.

Just by curiosity, are you guys under W10?
I noticed UAC is really messy with full screen programs, and after an Outerra update the UAC will prompt the "yes/no" window to authorize the install of the update, but will lock me in the full screen program (in a black screen). So Outerra will restart, but without installing the update (check your version number).
You can fix it by running it in window mode or by opening the Task manager in parallel and alt tab to it when the UAC pop-up.

Edit:

Small tip, you can zoom-in/zoom-out now in the Cessna and the Mig using +/- numpad keys

Does panning not work when you have the road window (or any window) open over the Google maps overlay?  I tried ctrl and it didn't work.  No luck with the mouse buttons either.

(Also, for those who didn't notice, with the new tweaks, the Map/Satellite buttons on the Google maps overlay have been moved over to the left.)

And can I request that we get control of the Google map buttons and transparency while having the road window open?

Hello,

there is fix in the attachment (you must be logged to see attachments)

Google Map overlay (CTRL+SHIFT+G by default)
- google controls moved to top left corner
- google controls are visible while in sandbox mode, Builder mode and Road editor mode
- fixed panning bug while in Builder and Road editor mode
- fixed bug when overlay didnt interact with mouse after sandbox was closed
- NOTE: when Road editor or Builder is open, you might interract with google maps controls (zoom, opacity slide),
but you must use RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON
- geographic overlay form has been repositioned to avoid cnflict with outerra logo (grid_overlay_plugin must be installed)

!!! Known bug !!!
When Google map overlay is active and also Builder dialog is open, there is bug that prevents selection / drag of object, if camera
is positioned low above terrain (aprox. 70 m). Solution is to move camera higher above terrain (zoom out).

OSM Overlay (CTRL+SHIFT+M by default)
- mouse wheel zoom has been enabled

Installation guide:
1) extract zipped file
2) copy content of unzipped "www" directory to "path_to_your_outerra_installation_directory/www directory"

This will be added also to new release.

... is it lower than, or near sea-level ? Might be just that, as all below is now under water ... also, better terrain resolution should do some tricks too later.

I think Cameni already responded to your question here (http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=2396.msg38225#msg38225):

It's because a large part of Azerbaijan is a land depression as low as -28 meters below the sea level.

Currently any land in OT that's below the sea level is flooded, that includes Caspian basin, Netherlands, Death valley and many more.
It will be possible to rectify once there's a proper lake support that will also be able to drain these parts of the world.

It was possible to change sea elevation by changing a value in the world.cfg file in the user directory, but it seems like it's not working anymore (it's not there and the one I added is not changing anything).

Fixing these flooded lands under sea level will require the solution described above, and it's not ready yet, it will be a relatively big addition to the engine capabilities  :)

I dont know when we lost it but it seems that when updating textures, these wont load anymore without reloading the game. Is it possible to have that feature back?

It was temporarily removed because it was causing regular spikes in large scenes. Would refresh on a shortcut be OK here? Or maybe doing the checks only in a special mode, like the scenery editor, though this doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the scenery editor. I assume it could be done automatically on the focused object when script editor or future material editor windows are open ...

Yeah having the texture to update in a special mode like scenery editor would be just fine.

Windows 10
AMD Radeon HD 5870

Did you perform a driver cleanup with DDU (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html)?

No, did not perform a ddu. Never had to cause all the drivers in systemwow64 are current, and even Cinema4D runs without problems using OpenGL.
Running a MacPro 2010 using bootcamp. I. A not for some reason run the CCC installer directly though (no supported hardware found), I always have to use the device manager to install the drivers.
Windows 10 is a little bitchy about my MacPro it seems.

Are there any logs I can look into? The "eng . log" does not contain anything.
Title: Re: Latest version: 0.8.4.6017
Post by: cameni on October 18, 2015, 08:20:41 am
eng.log probably won't contain anything if the driver crashes right at the start. Thus far AMD driver crashes were linked to a problem in Catalyst installation that can be often resolved by a clean reinstall, even though all file versions seem to be correct. No idea what the problem is, we even reported that to AMD some time ago but they were unable to reproduce it. We are receiving these reports regularly from users though, and the fact that the driver error apparently occurs only with OT doesn't help. I guess it's because OT uses new OpenGL version compared to other programs, though you may try some other (newer) OpenGL apps or benchmarks.

This usually happened with old drivers that did not properly support sRGB, though we added detection for it. Can you check if eng.log contains something about sRGB?

white grass so far resolved by adding ALT + C $ con.symbol ("$ SRGB_TF_BUG", "1")
Another solution is to open with Notepad ++ eng.cfg file and change the line 7 and put
msaa = 8,      (anti-aliasing MSAA-8X)-4x)-2X)
I do not know is the explanation.

God I love this new scenery editor!

Before I had the hardest time ever working with the single largest object in Outerra (the greeble pack bridge) its selection box was messed up and it was a tiny spot on the entire model that you had to be lucky to find to ever be able to select again in Object menu.

But now with the scenery editor the entire thing is selectable with ease and building all the way up to space is now a breeze too with the helpful ctrl+drag to copy, and multiple selection copy+drag which I love. Movement is so much easier and objects are fully selectable in space now!

Before I had to be really careful about every time I spawned this infamous object lest it hover over my world for eternity but now spawning, copying, deleting, moving it is a breeze I love it! :D

I'm inspired to make a new space tower now, one that will now be infinitely easier and quicker to build than the one before.

Yeah, the new editor is incredible for large objects and mass object modification. As soon as your tower is ready, you can just select all the segments and copy paste it (with the "terrain level" option), and you will end up with something really nice :)

Oh, and I never managed to get a working instal of Greeble City, how did you managed to install these?

I just realized Windows 10 uninstalled Outerra on me....  >:(

Probably with the TH2 build update.  Luckily it kept the data in the Outerra folder in my user folder, so I just backed it up, installed again, and put it back.  Hoping I didn't mess anything up (it did update again after launching), but my changes seem to be up to date.

Strange because it never did that before in build updates since the Insider launch in 2014...

They just worked from the moment I downloaded the pack last year, if you want I can upload my greeble_build_compilation_8 packages file and you can see if that works for you? I don't think there was an associated .otx file with the download, can't remember.

I think usually Orbital towers are anchored to something heavy (counterweight) just a bit above Geosync. I think something bad would happen structurally if you tried to reach the moon, though!

"weapon emitter to a sub-geom obj"

Do you mean attaching the 'fire' method to a BONE joint? I asked for this too.

Code: [Select]
function fire_gun(obj, pos, dir){
  obj.fire(
    pos, //pos - model-space launch position
    dir, //dir - model-space launch direction
    805, //speed - firing velocity in m/s
    0.3, //caliber - meters
    {x:1,y:0.3,z:0.05}, //color - plasma color RGB
    'gun_muzzle' //joint name to attach the light to
  );
}
Quote
"vehicles to broadcast their ECEF coords to each other"

Do you mean like GPS, radio position finding or other types of sensor targeting an object? This has been discussed, but importantly how is it specifically implemented, and how does it scale up?

Best regards,
Uriah

Yes. Basically letting geom have access to it too so that you can do this.geom.fire(..). Don't know why I had it in my head that lights could be added to different geom objects. Long time since I used them.

Just some sort of global array that contains the ECEF coords of all objects loaded that other objects can access.

With this driver fsx work even more smoother & textures look more hdrish some how ! Though I'm using fsx steam edition , but on top of that I installed prepar3d separately ! From which directory I copied main scenery aircraft & few more other safe to copy game folders above steam edition ! Works great , so this new driver actually boosted fsx ! I'll just wait it over ! Plus I don't think that you could get the older driver ! Or can you ?

Do you think the release of Vulkan might see some nice changes for Outerra? they could make a Windows AND Linux version now with the same API (and other platforms, even android). I thought it be a good idea to ditch OpenGL at somepoint.

See Cameni's post here:

Tl;Dr : Vulkan improves some elements compared to OGL, but these are not important for OT. It might improve driver stability or maybe not, but it would require a lot of rework to get it working.

Hi cameni, how about a nice little "Happy Easter" surprise ...
... well I know, it's done when it's done, but at least a little teaser (screenshot) would be neat.

You already have that update, it's not a new one. That link was provided just for people who can't use autoupdate for some reason.
