Title: MiG-29 Fulcrum Upgrades & Improvements
Post by: Uriah on February 01, 2015, 10:56:54 am
Current Upgrades include; landings lights, cockpit lights, navigation lights and engine glow, as well as automatic drogue parachute which pulls open the main braking parachute.

The lights are placed according to reference images, but since I cannot determine exactly what Mig-29 variant this is, I included all of the navigation lights for a number of variants to display the potential of the new Outerra lighting system.

 Also, I wrote a script, which should change the color of the engine glow from orange to blue as the speed increases, but I am unable to update the color change. I tried including the lights in both the initialize section and the update section, and neither were effective, however the lights worked in both sections. Of course the Light Switches must always remain in the update section, and you can modify them to work with key controls, I don't know how to map the controls to the switches yet. It would be great if we could update the light parameters. If this is possible I can make strobe lights, color changing lights, etc.

Research of the Mig-29's braking parachute system provided accurate date for the FDM. The main parachute is deployed by the small drogue (auxiliary) parachute. It is setup for the chutes to deploy automatically, IF the wheels touch down, AND the throttle is zero AND you are above a specified velocity. This prevents deployment during taxi and takeoff (Levi's idea!). The drogue chute is deployed IF there is more than 0.1 ft of compression on either of the rear landing gear shocks, AND the throttle is zero, AND the velocity is above 100 kts. The main braking chute is deployed IF the drogue chute is deployed, AND the front landing gear is compressed, AND the velocity is above 15 kts, AND the throttle is zero. IF the throttle is NOT zero, OR velocity is less than 15 kts, both parachute-reef_norms are set to zero.

It will be released at some point it the near future once the upgrades are complete, including two additional features!  :)) 8) :D What's next?!

Best regards,
Uriah George

Yeah!
I was a bit sad to see none of the default aircraft had been upgraded with lights, I guess I was not the only one   :)

Slovakia has only 3 fight-ready ones (meaning in 24-7 capability to fly) ... the digital-painted is a MiG-29AS. Its a hybrid-sly (cause were now in NATO, some things were changed with that in mind) modernized version from the original, to the Warsaw-pact exported planes (witch were downgraded in some capabilities (nuclear ordnance, avionics)).

Nice thanks Pyton.

I am going to add an indicator light somewhere in the cockpit that turns on when the parachute is deployed. Right now I can only tell by pulling up debug, but that should work much better.

Taking suggestions for anything people would like to see inclued!

Uriah

How to get runway lights (visible green on Uriah's screenshots)? Are they included in pack or it is some other pack?
Title: Re: Mig-29 Upgrades: Lights, Switches, Braking Parachute
Post by: Uriah on February 02, 2015, 10:52:07 pm
The runway lighting system is my work and not yet released. The runway lights were just a demonstration, or proof of concept, and have to be configured custom for each different runway. The new runway light script I'm developing will include sets of variables at the top of the script so you may easily specify all of the parameters to generate a customized runway lighting system. Then all you need to do is copy the objdef and script files, point the new objdef file to the new script file, to create a new RwyLights-CCAFB_Skid_Strip for example. This is the best alternative to manually specifying the parameters for hundreds of lights for each runway.

The runway light system will include:

Edge lights, centerline lights, approach centerline lights, threshold lights, displaced threshold lights, displaced threshold side bar lights, end threshold lights, touchdown zone lights, visual approach slope indicator lights, and precision approach indicator lights, as well as rotating Aerodrome Beacon lights.

Uriah

wow Great Wriah!
I think now we can have a problem. Maybe the Mig will not fly because the pilot will want to take a cup of wine with his girl with that great ambient light inside the cockpit.. ))

PD: By the way. Would you share the actual .Js file with the mig29 lights? Just for be able to wait for your upgrade playing the Mig at night :)

Thanks! I have to say, wine, woman and flying is a great combination!

PD: By the way. Would you share the actual .Js file with the mig29 lights? Just for be able to wait for your upgrade playing the Mig at night :)

Nearly finished. I had to re-factor my code because the updates changed a few parameters and I am adding working on indicator lights.

Thanks!

Almost done, thanks for the patience.

Finished:
Alternating red strobe lights with flash angle dependent, (so you don't see as much flash from lights pointing in the other direction)
Red nav/strobe lights use both point and spot lights with fast fade time.
Fixed strobe time sync, (blinking, flashing, strobing lights would flash X times and stop for a period of time)
Improved engine glow with spot light and slow color/intensity fade to blue at high velocity
Cockpit sounds off when outside
Added spot lights to cockpit, in addition to ambient point lights.
Fixed a number of errors in the light switches.
Fixed landing lights being visible inside cockpit on panels/gauges, and changed reflector size.

Still need to:
Add all lights to bit masks, with corresponding bit mask switches.
Add strobe effect to engine glow, with small variance and fast fade time so that it flickers slightly.
Fine tune all lights for both day/night (some look good at night and not day and vise-versa)
Fine tune all light positions to remove flicker that happens when point light is too close to mesh surface.
Fine tune all light colors to be more realistic. (Nav lights are not pure red and pure green, but rather red-orange and light blue-green)
Re-factor all my code, remove necessary variables/statements and condense lines.

Did you try landing at high speed with zero throttle to deploy the braking parachute? Of course there is no physical parachute yet, but it works perfectly in simulation, and if you're in FPV, you won't notice anyways. A blue light will flash on the flaps/gear indicator panel if the chute is deployed.

Is there any way to turn off the lights? I really like them but I can't get 75fps on the Rift with them on.
Title: Re: Mig-29 Upgrades: Lights, Switches, Braking Parachute
Post by: Uriah on February 28, 2015, 05:54:49 pm
Hello,

I was already planning for the next version to include a variable at the top of the script to turn some, or all of the lights off. You just hit Alt+E from the aircraft, edit the variable from true to false and reload the script with Alt+R. I would like to come up with a high performance light mode, which still had lights but doesn't impact frame rate as much. Possibly keep the cockpit and landing lights on and turn the rest off for Rift mode. I could finish that up tonight and post the new script here.

Regards,
Uriah

As promised:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/0uq85689q5bl276/mig29.js

Just replace the original script, ./Anteworld/packages/outerra/mig29/mig29.js

A the top are two variables, light_switch and cockpit_brt. Set the value as desired and reload the script.

P.S. Please let me know if that helps and what kind of performance you get in each mode. Thanks!

Best regards,
Uriah

UPDATE: Added more parameters: http://www.mediafire.com/view/0uq85689q5bl276/mig29.js

//light_switch = 0; //All lights off (best frame rate)
//light_switch = 1; //All lights on (lower frame rate)
//light_switch = 2; //Only some lights on (good frame rate)
var light_switch = 1;

//nav_light_switch = 0; //All nav lights off (best frame rate)
//nav_light_switch = 1; //All nav lights on (lower frame rate)
var nav_light_switch = 1;

//strobe_light_switch = 0; //All strobe lights off (best frame rate)
//strobe_light_switch = 1; //All strobe lights on (lower frame rate)
var strobe_light_switch = 1;

//cockpit_brt = 0; //Low brightness
//cockpit_brt = 1; //Medium brightness
//cockpit_brt = 2; //High brightness
var cockpit_brt = 2;

Thanks so much for the help, I've had a chance to test my set-up here. I'm using a gtx 760 which seems to be considered low/medium spec for using with the Rift.

I only tested in cockpit view.

With All lights off I'm getting steady 75fps, I very occasionally see drops down to 71.

With All On, Nav Off, Strobe Off - 58-72fps
        All On, Nav On, Strobe Off - 37-51fps
        All On, Nav On, Strobe On - 49-58fps
        All On, Nav Off, Strobe On - 55-65fps

   With Some On, I get 69 -75fps, seems I'm a bit underpowered.

It seems strange that with All On+Nav On, that turning Strobe On increases the frame rate.

It looks and runs amazingly for me on the Rift at these settings.

There is not to much to decrease, then, in order to improve your performance. Is true than less than 75 with the oculus causes illness?
Title: Re: Mig-29 Upgrades: Lights, Switches, Braking Parachute
Post by: davythedave on March 01, 2015, 06:39:09 pm
Below 75 and the image starts to stutter and jump, it feels unpleasant and breaks the illusion of being "there". Once you hit 75 it feels like the image becomes much more solid and believable, the head tracking feels perfect and Outerra as a flight sim becomes unbelievably good. It is hands down the best experience I've had on the oculus headset. If there was some way to connect 2 machines and have a dogfight it would be the best thing ever made.

Post by: Uriah on March 01, 2015, 06:54:20 pm
I will do some testing, it is possible there are some elements of the script the could be optimized, or possibly I need to reduce the draw calls for the mig29 package. One thing I could do is reduce the resolution of the textures except for the cockpit textures for a 'Rift enhanced' version. If I can optimize everything on the MiG that is not seen in Rift mode and make it a separate optional package you can download and install that would overwrite the high resolution one included with OT.

Any suggestions on what could further improve the performance for Rift mode?

davythedave, for comparison go through all the aircraft/vehicles and tell me what the frame rates are. If you are getting low frame rates in all vehicles, that it is just your CPU/GPU. However, if the MiG-29, or an aircraft such as Levi's F-117A Nighthawk, have a considerable performance impact, than developers will need to produce a separate version of aircraft specially optimized for Rift users. In both the MiG-29 and F-117A there is a lot going on in the script, which could 'possibly' be the cause, but I somehow doubt it.

Best regards,
Uriah

Hi,

Regarding the runway lights, it is something I need to finish, and would be released as a mod until which time Outerra can implement an optimized runway lighting system integrated into the road system when a runway is built in the engine. I did design the script so that you can adjust the length, width, number of lights, and other properties easily by modifying a few parameters to make it fit different sized runways.

I have attached some screens of what the runway lights look like currently after some changes to the lights in Outerra made them look much better from a distance, which is really what I had been waiting for.

I'll try to release the runway lights soon!

Best regards,
Uriah

Hi!  This looks great.  Looking forward to these runway lights!  Just got the Alpha yesterday, and very excited by all the changes from 2015. I work with a volunteer mod group called HoggitDev related to DCS.  I was turned onto Outerra by one of our members, and this procedural driven environment, looks very nice.  The performance for this engine seems far superior, so can't wait to see continuing evolution toward full fidelity flight sim, the work so far seems incredible!  I just got on board yesterday, so pending IRL responsibilities, I can't wait to dig into the forums more, explore the existing work, and hopefully start contributing some aircraft models by my own hand!

Many thanks!  I'd love to get the A-4E into outerra, without question.  Right now, we have our hands full trying to get all the pieces together just to make the Simple Flight Model work in-game.  It's not a paid development, and I think that might be starting to wear the guys down a little bit, as they're having to balance IRL with the volunteering.  Also, learning all these new skills, has led to everyone kind of dabbling on their own instead of pairing up to tackle difficult challenges in development.  Add to the that the various degrees of OCD behavior, and you get the idea. A dozen direction, slowly crawling forward, or backwards in some cases ;P Really hoping to see things pick back up, but I'm broke myself, still got the Alpha of outerra, because I was researching procedural generation for about two weeks before Farlander dropped this in my lap, and $16 seems like a steal for planet Earth! Thanks again to Farlander for that, and I certainly will do everything in my power to utilize Outerra.  It really seems like volunteer modding gigs are a huge time investment, so always looking for a creative way to add some financing, but I wanted to focus on teamwork first.  Unfortunately sim pilots are fairly independent, and without fiscal incentive, I see IRL responsibilites tanking our critical mass.  Even worse than toxic personalities, which come and go.  Still, we started 2nd week in Janurary, and we've only just recently started to lose a little steam.  I still think we'll have a strong update this month, and I look forward to getting a test model into Outerra to get some dirt on my hands!

It really seems like volunteer modding gigs are a huge time investment, so always looking for a creative way to add some financing, but I wanted to focus on teamwork first.  Unfortunately sim pilots are fairly independent, and without fiscal incentive, I see IRL responsibilities tanking our critical mass.  Even worse than toxic personalities, which come and go.  Still, we started 2nd week in January, and we've only just recently started to lose a little steam.  I still think we'll have a strong update this month, and I look forward to getting a test model into Outerra to get some dirt on my hands!

Modding projects, especially long term, have always been prone to breakups for the reasons you mentioned and more. Taking a project to completion is always an awesome accomplishment!
