Title: [WIP] AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin
Post by: Levi on March 14, 2015, 06:35:29 am
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_F-117_Nighthawk): The AgustaWestland AW101 is a medium-lift helicopter used in both military and civil applications. It was developed by joint venture between Westland Helicopters in the UK and Agusta in Italy in response to national requirements for a modern naval utility helicopter. Several operators, including the armed forces of Britain, Denmark and Portugal, use the name Merlin for their AW101 aircraft. It is manufactured at factories in Yeovil, England and Vergiate, Italy; licensed assembly work has also taken place in Japan and the United States.

This is an unofficial conversion for the AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin from AlphaSim/Virtavia (http://www.virtavia.com). The conversion is done with Phil Perrott's Permission at virtavia.com (http://www.virtavia.com).

Awesome :D It's interesting to see how much these vehicules look good, even if they are a freeware work.
Not sure about how much work/improvements you do on these :)

I think after a certain point, aircraft modeling tools have matured to the place that you might spend as much time implementing the systems as you did building the aircraft! Especially payware quality systems.

I like to chose the ones that look the best. ^-^

As for how much improvements I do on these, I usually just make little corrections on the meshes, adjust UVW maps if necessary, instance geometries, tessellate part of meshes where polygons are too visible, redo the smoothing groups, merge the interior with the exterior for seamless transition between those, and stuff like that.

But you always can compare with the original.
For example, you can look at this video for this particular aircraft and compare (note that the buttons on the MFDs are missing in my screenshots):

This is a beauty. Looking forwars to fly in it. Finally, helicopters are getting some love! 8)

And I found out why I can't fly copters. My aircraft control settings conflict with those necessary for a copter. I can't wait until vehicle settings are separate per vehicle type.

There is a separate helicopter control tab.

There is a separate helicopter control tab.

Yes but controls on other tabs are inter-related. Change something there and it can affect other vehicles as well. You can quickly get a mess.

ah i didnt know... Make sense as there's not a separate vehicle instance between planes and helicopter yet.

What control you find can create conflict between planes and heli?

I use an Xbox joypad usually, and completely change the mapping for things like throttle, ailerons, flaps, changing views.......

Which also changes around the controls for other vehicles.

You can toy with my Iomap and try to fly a copter, if you like. https://www.dropbox.com/s/aklubliz4qd0fue/iomap.cfg?dl=0

if so, ... anteworld enter a different phase. objects interact.

@HiFlyer,
That's interesting, I've never had any problems with my Saitek Cyborg F.L.Y 5 Fly Stick (http://img.elmir.ua/img/136561/3000/2000/dzhoystik_madcatz_f_l_y_5_flight_stick_ccb4330200b2_04_1.jpg)...
The only thing is that Outerra doesn't recognize properly the POV Hat . Other than that, all works as it should.

That would be really nice, but it's not possible to interact with objects, yet...

Maybe you don't extensively remap your controls.........

By the way I just used a random car to push one of your windmills across the scenery........... (nods)

I have all the controls for planes and helis mapped on both, keyboard and joystick...

It may need a little more weight. :)) =D

I just tried your iomap, but your assignments doesn't correspond with my joystick's buttons/axes. It's all messed up. For example, the throttle lever moves the camera...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

Seriously though, Outerra default settings are not so good for an Xbox controller. You are pretty much forced to change them.

I gave it a try too and i couldn't get it off the ground  either . I mapped it to something that look more similar to my joystick config and it works good for basic flying. I will have to try extra pedals for throttle, I think it would help a lot for more tricky manuevers.

Default Outerra on an xbox pad sets throttle control to the lower triggers......

If you don't hold down those triggers at all times (tiring) throttle drops to %50 and your plane starts to fall from the sky. Etc.

Other buttons are similarly funky. Good thing you can change them!  :)

Hmmmmmmm...... AndFlys sub interacts with the platform that raises and lowers it, but apparently thats through the use of bullet?

Would it be possible to build a JSBSIM plane with invisible bullet ghost wheels?

So that it could interact with other surfaces? Like a carrier deck?

That's a very nice video, and very informative! Thanks for sharing it here.
I'm also impressed by the fact that JSBSim actually simulates the downwash effects! It makes hovering easier when close to the ground.

Yep, pretty sure Andrea's platform is using bullet physics. JSBSim is another story...

And that's a pretty good idea actually, but I don't think it's possible without official support.
I'm curious what developers have in mind for this kind of things, especially for landing on a carrier deck...

I fear that will take some time before this heli can be released, because I'll have very little time to work on it, for about a month or even two.
So I want to ask you guys of you would like me to post quick videos or something with the progress that will be made. What do you think?

Here is a quick video showing some basic blade-flexing. In the first two clips, the input is actually my joystick, just to show how the blade is flexing:

Yep, each blade is split up into 8 sections, to be precise. At this moment that is the only way to do it.

great effect, and that fluidity, I hope that with my old PC runs the same way. can I ask you how many fps? and that has the characteristics of your PC, and the settings of outerra? thanks for the great work 8)

Custom vertex normals helps a lot to hide the seams. At high angles, they become a bit visible, though...

My computer specifications:
For storage, I use one HDD from Seagate:
Interface: SATA
Capacity: ~1TB
Speed: 7200 RPM
Max. Transfer Mode: SATA III 6.0Gb/s

As you can see, my rig is pretty old too.

My Outerra settings when that video was recorded (when I record longer videos, and because of the stutters, I lower almost all settings):

So the average is about 35 FPS...

Probably not. I just come from the FSX world, and we all have to have generally above average rigs just to get the program to run less like a hamstrung pig! Why else do you think we have so many hopeful flight simmers floating around here?  =D
