Title: Grouping of several objects
Post by: Bob425 on December 24, 2017, 12:31:57 pm
Can anyone explain how to group several models, so that they appear in the Asset Menu under a single folder?

Hi Bob425,
First of all, I want to thank you for making your Mersey available. I downloaded it and have been enjoying it.

I'm a newbie here, so I don't have many answers... but here is my understanding of the question you have asked:

any time there is more than one OBJDEF file in a packages directory, the subject of the OBJDEF will show up as an item within a folder.  Looking at the folders in Levi's World2XPlane series, I see that he has many OBJDEF files but only one PKG file.  I'm guessing that the original model that was uploaded had many submeshes that are referenced by the various OBJDEF files in the folder.  I believe this to be true because even with only one PKG file, the models in the folder are frequently different shapes and sizes.

It is also possible to have multiple OBJDEF files in a folder for the purpose of sending different parameters to a script or when using more than one script with the same geometry.

I would like to know this as well! I created 3 different cubes and tried to import to outerra.

Does not matter what I do, it always joins the meshes into 1 thing. I tried everything.

If anyone could explain how to somehow make them a separate mesh, as they should be, I would appreciate it. This is impacting my desire do make assets.

Hi, pedropp222!

Is not possible with .fbx (for now; probably soon). You need to use collada (.dae) instead (I guess the collada importer is F7, click on "assets", click on "import dae".

Every different object in your 3d app will be imported into a single .pkg, but you'll see a different .objdef and .mtl for each.
Usually, if all of them use the same material and texture, you edit their .objdef files so all of them "point" to a single .mtl file, and you delete the others.

Thank you very much, that's exactly what I wanted! Now I can make assets :)

I'm sorry, I must be thick, but I still don't get it.

I have made 4 different traffic lights, 1way, 2way, 3way & 4way
They are in a folder called traffic lights on my desktop with the four respective .dae files and their texture folders.
I open the dae importer, and I can only select each one at a time, resulting in individual entry's in the assets.
What am I missing????

You just need to have the different variations of the traffic lights in the same file, like what I did with the sign pack.

Every sign is a separate object. It does not matter if they overlap like that.

When you export as collada file, the dialog will say something like this:

That's correct.

Then, import the collada file in outerra and in the packages folder every object will be separate.

Hey Pedropp222...  I installed your signs, but on my system they showed up as separate entries in my asset list, not as a folder (which is a much more efficient presentation)
(Maybe I downloaded an early version?)

Can you direct me to a link for an installer that will put all of your signs in a folder? Then I can clean up my asset area by removing all of the individual signs
( never mind.  I found a link for your updated signs but my virus program throws all kinds of red flags on that site so I'm not willing to DL anything from there)

Thanks to everybody who helped to explain this topic.   I actually got similar results with FBX, but in a different way:

I created one generic sign, then copied the MTL and OBJDEF files for that first sign and edited them to add new sign textures.  For each OBJDEF file I got a new entry in my folder.  In my case, the signs all have the same shape (rectangular)

Naming convention for the files was as follows:
park_signs.objdef, park_signs.mtl
park_signs1.objdef, park_signs1.mtl
park_signs2.objdef, park_signs2.mtl
etc

when I named them differently than the original, it didn't work.

Just 1 PKG file, from the original sign.

Inspired by the fact that Outerra's natural grandeur is like spending time in a national park, I've been developing assets for creating my own parks. Since we're on the topic of many objects in one folder, and of signs in particular, here's a link to my Park Signs folder:

Standard disclaimers apply. I'm a novice at all this.

Thanks for the link, patmarrnc.
I can see why this collection needed t go into a folder !!!!!!
