There was a thread about 3D modeling help (http://www.outerra.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=356). The sandbox game will have the ability to import models so people will be able to check how things look in the world. We are looking at how to handle the legal aspects of automatic content replication and sharing, so that once you import a model it gets visible to others visiting the same location.

If you have some vehicle models that could get into the game, that are consistent with the game (http://www.outerra.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=9) setting, we would welcome any such suggestions that are or could be made legally in order. For example, a buggy would be useful there, so you don't have to travel everywhere with a heavy truck.

Textures are problematic because we use procedural generation and so there are some specifics. Also the system will change with the introduction of multiple climate and land types. What might help here would be a collection of photos of different ecotypes from various parts of the world that we should ultimately render, but I guess this will take off once people can experience the world and would like to see their known ecotype to be present there.

Possibly update the updates one with the google plus linky thingo? (I figured it would be ok to post as it would get deleted anyway).

I have used my massive brain to deduce that this man wants.....

You to add GooGle+ as a source for updates.

That will be $399 for the translation.

That thought sparked in my tiny brain too, but then I thought - does G+ allow uploading of any (binary) files? Anyway, any http source should work.

Why binary files? I think he just wants a +1 (vote)link on the blog, so he can +1 it.

Hi Cameni,

I am wondering here about the many types of land cover that will be available in OT and wonder how much of the "Blue Marble" technique/data will allow the addition of extremely high volumes of varying biomes of the world. I want to link you to a website that covers the many types of ecosystems contained in New Zealand. There are so many but hope that this can be a resource for you with OT.

Cheers,

Kelvin

Thanks, a nice resource. Hmm, I'm wondering how to make some user-creatable land types. The Blue Marble basically give the color of a 500x500m cell. MODIS dataset, from which the Blue Marble was derived, contains several infrared and visible color bands and is able to tell a rough land type from these parameters. However, the type is quite rough, and BM contains far higher variation. My original idea was to get resources for major land types, get their color appearance, temperature and precipitation ranges, and run it over the whole dataset to select the best match for each pixel.

Then if someone produced a new land type, picked one area where it occurs (by color or other factors), it could be detected the next time the processing runs.

What time of year?  I'd think (late?) Spring would be the best if that data is available.  Otherwise the grass is pretty brown here 90% of the time.

The data should cover all the seasons and transitions in-between.

That too.

The data are available for each month.

That sounds very logical and if it works will look very spectacular indeed.

Purple grass?Crystal or diamond roads instead of dirt? All custom made? :D  ( I mean... can we make pieces of ground, then multiply it. Or have it like the road works, we make the new ground and we use it where we need it?(even if its made out of diamond, crystal precious marbles) :P

Outerracraft ? :P

Outerracraft ? :P

hmmmm...  ;D sounds like a very excellent idea!

But I thought of something, since the world is so big. I could just pick a single big island and start working on it? Right?... but the problem is!When the updates come... will it influence my work till that time that I have done?

I mean... let me give you an example to be more clear:   So lets say.. I'm waiting 2-3 years for some update with an option of the engine to give the designer the possibility to modify continents and make something more appropriate to the story of the game, cause I see everything is very nice, but it seems like you can use it more for a GTA game or medieval history game of the Earth. So the thing I was saying... if I work on my island 1-2 years till the update appears, and when I use the options to modify lets say Africa ( make it smaller to give the users more content to play) .. and my cities , castles , roads , creatures, etc. are all on Madagascar island where everything is isolated, and they would need to swim or make a boat from sticks and bamboo trees to get inside the lower South-East side of Africa. The thing is I do not want to lose the content I worked on, even if there are updates or newer versions of the engine, or even if I delete Africa in my example here and replace it with some chain of islands like in Indonesia.I want to hear that you guys are doing all you can that a new version or update will be able to use older files, so I may load back-ups in newer versions.

Ah... and yeah... do you plan or have in mind to make it possible for multiple designers / level designers to work in the same time on the content? I mean.. it would be difficult probably to work individually and then try to bring everyone's work in to the same place like in some traditional MMO's , where not every territory is chained and they can lets say use some magical portals (that I hate) to get to the other side of the "planet" ( a straight line made out of a huge piece of polygon board ).In my mind probably something where someone could join your save and work on the same thing.Cause if people have more different versions.. that wouldn't be efficient. But Ha! I guess you already did that!

And will there be able to allow animations like tree's to catch fire from a flaming arrow, and the collision of the fire touches the round bubble collision of other tree's and starting like a big forest fire :D? I mean that kind of particle animation, working on that as well :D?

For Outerracraft!

Awfully sorry to drag up an old thread - but I'm glad Cameni said (paraphrased) 'send in any photographs of your area of the world'. This is something I'd love to do, and I'm sure it would help Kelvinr quite a bit as well - he could focus perhaps on the difficult converting into Outerra files, whilst the minions like me just go around taking pictures. We'd need a new thread, and a hefty moderator with a big hard drive to archive them all.
