Several days ago we started a closed beta test of the Outerra engine techdemo 1. Initially we took just a few testers, in the second round we have added some more to the current total of 26 testers.
People for the test are being primarily picked from long time active members of our forums. We will be expanding the testing group even further, but only after getting the amount of reported issues down below a threshold, in order not to get ourselves overloaded.
So far the testing goes well, we are receiving automated crash reports and we instantiated a bug tracker as well to keep it all organized. A couple of unexpected issues on different HW&OS popped out, and looks that there's yet another issue with ATI drivers hidden somewhere.
Some of our testers are already letting to run their fantasies about upcoming games wild :-)

This is epic, I can almost feel the gradually closing proximity of a demo! ;) keep up the good work. ps i know you will :P
-
This is terrific news! This is awesome, guys! Can't wait to see more of this.
-
Oh, that's are great news! 8)
-
Awesome! Here's hoping I get a chance to test... :P
-
A little question here.
These, who are testing this - could they record a footage of this?
I don't say I test this (I wish I did...), but this is question first to you, cameni, and later to beta testers.
I'm curious how would that look from tester's perspective...
-
We have a separate forum for the testing itself, where all the bug reports and issues go, but they are now (as from today) allowed to talk about their experience and to post screenshots of stuff that we have already covered on the forums or blog.
-
Cool!
The demo is the flight simulator you've already posted some pics and videos, correct?
-
It's not a flight simulator, it's just an alpha demo of Outerra technology, with stuff that we have shown thus far.
-
Thx for the reply. Just out of curiosity, can you briefly describe what you can do in/with the demo? Unfortunately I am running on a Mac. So I guess I cannot have a look too soon...
-
Hi all,
I happen to be one of the testers and I'm allowed to post my comment to public place.
As a flightsim enthusiast I'm looking at Outerra mostly as a future simulator of flight, though I have and some different ideas now.
So what we have in a beta of Tech Demo? We have very detailed terrain (especially in the mountains area), a lot of trees on slopes, detailed roads, and some buildings (a bit simple for now). How can we explore all of that? We can drive Tatra, fly Cessna and Apache, use "UFO" to move fast around globe, and we have first person view with avatar (but avatar is not animated in beta, which is looking funny). We don't have many sounds yet, only engine sounds for Cessna and Apache.
What else we can do? We can make different roads and put some static objects. Of course we can make a screenshots and even record a video.
There's a lot of menus where you can set up controls, select (or save) camera position, change time and play with some colors of fog, water and such.
How does it work? After starting the client fist time and logging in, the Outerra starts to download terrain files for your current location. That can take time if you have slow internet connection, though for one place the files are not very big. Default location is an airfield near Fractopolis town. Default view is UFO camera.
The most impressive part for me is a simple flight in the Cessna above forests and mountains. I'm spending a lot of time just staring at the window of Cessna (you can control view using mouse) while flying at low altitude above the trees. Though we have only one type of tree, a pine tree and no 3d trees in the beta, the forests look very realistic from low altitude.

What I missing most of all in the Tech Demo beta is the clouds, weather and rivers; variety of tree types and ground textures. I hope to see all that in the Game soon.
I believe there's a big future in this project, it definitely could be the "Simulator of Everything" eventually.

Thanks for the report ddenn. Good stuff, can't wait to get my grubby little mits on this :)
EDIT: just looked at your pics. Been playing FSX and DCS A 10 in the past couple of days and boy do those Outerra pics look good by comparison.
Are you allowed to tell us what specs your pc is and whats fps you are getting?

I'd love to get into the closed beta of Outerra as I have been in quite a number of early to late closed alpha and beta tests. namely for Focus and Sirius, Codemasters and currently Gamma Wave Games. This is something I always keep my eye on as it interests me greatly. I'm very good at finding quirky bugs that a lot of people may miss or overlook. I can use both an Nvidia graphics card (GTX 470 AND a GTX 560Ti) and an AMD card (an ATI Radeon 5750). I do also have a Quadro FX 4400 handy. I have several systems I can test this on. I'd spend a good several days (yes days) walking, flying and vewing the world, followed by testing out all the available features and coming up with some pretty obscure looking results. Any bugs I find I can report back in detail, with how to reproduce them and all that. please please please lemme test it :p
-
I've also been putting OT through it's paces for a while now. Be glad it wasn't released publicly as it was/is still too broken for an unknowing person to take seriously. First five crashes and they would probably move elsewhere. It is important that the demo work and be stable especially on ATi card.
Some fun with renderer colors..

Also the UI needs a bit of work. I still cant get my controls set up for wheel and joystick at the same time.

I can only tell that on q6600, 4gb ram, GTX460 with 2gb vram I have enough fps. And as I understand the released version will be more optimized.
-
Wow, amazing impressions from the Outerra Engine. Thx ddenn and ZeosPantera for the reports. The engine looks outstanding. I hope to see more about ships and underwater environment soon. ;)
-
Wohaaa...
Thx for the Pics :)
Im an Fanboy since the first second i discovered this great Engine.
Im a Simulation-Fan, no matter what is simulated. Planes, Cars, Busses, Bikes, FPS, whatever...
The last Sim i played was "DCS: A-10c". The best Sim out there...but the grafixengine is a bit outdated.
Hopefully, "TrackIR" will be implemented on the long run ;D
I cant wait to get my hands on this great piece of Software!
pls post more pics/vids :)

Nice! :D
Would you matter if I'd request some screenshots of specific locations? Unless they aren't in yet (which I doubt...)
I mean...
Grand Canyon (36°06′N 112°06′W) AND/OR Hel Peninsula (Baltic Sea, Bay of Puck, Poland) (54°38′30″N 18°46′53″E)
You may do these or not. But hey - we can't still explore these on our own - you are our eyes...
(a video would be as nice as screenshots, but I won't complain to either...)
-
You can find screenshots and video of Grand Canyon here http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=116.0 (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=116.0)

Perhaps a thread in the Development Screenshot forum would be appropriate.
(Opens Outerra screenshot folder ... dismayed by lack of content ... /sighs at not thinking about screenshots while testing. Glances at video folder ... oooh, that's why!) ;)

I always forget about taking screens or capturing videos. :D
I just open Outerra, and wildly go from one location to the next, followed by flying around and more sight-seeing. :D

@ZeosPantera
Wow nice horizon! The Transition looks great.

I think most of us do the same thing. I know I've been in a location, awed by it, and it's only after I shut down Outerra that I think "Crap! I should have screened that!"

I wish I could test the engine :'( I'm already testing a render engine, totally different from what outerra does but I spent the days rendering XD so I know could be testing it if the creators give me the chance :3
Anyway, about angrypig's shot, I love the ground texture, the leaves and the sky, the fog on the background is just amazing, I think I wouldn't be able to recreate it in unity or even in world machine, not to say terragen but one thing I don't like is the texture on the trees and how they merge with the ground but I wouldn't worry too much, it's a beta :D
Hope to see a public beta or an RC, thanks in advance. :3

Good to hear, have been following development of this for a while now, keep up the good work. I would happily join your test group when you expand.

HEL YEAH!
Semi-fun fact: "Hel" is a Polish word for "Hellium", but it doesn't have anything to do with this gas.

Very good news. I hope I can get a chance to test. :)

Hi. I'm new to the forum. In my spare time i have been playing around with Irrlicht ( open source ) 3d engine, working mainly on two things : realistic water shader and a planetary rendering engine ( which of course had been at a very initial phase when i stopped working on it - a simple character moving on a globe ).
I discovered outerra recently and it seems very promising, I would love being involved in the closed beta, although I know i'm very new to the forum and older members have a priority.
Thanks!
-
I envy you people that are testing. Been watching this for years. :)
Can't wait till the engine is complete.
-
I'm proud of Outerra, what they have and want to reach...
Is in this beta still the ATI bug?
-
Is in this beta still the ATI bug?
I wouldn't so much call it a bug as much as an overall incompatibility. The way things are rendered is a bit messy still. I hope they get it worked out soon because anything near Fractalopolis kills my frames down to 10.
-
Hi, Guys!
That is excellent news! I'm really looking forward for trying out the Outerra engine! Keep up the excellent work!! Thanks!!
Cheers,

well as a player of WW2OL i have extensive beta experience. barring the funny though, I am a scuba instructor who loves the ocean, and if yer needing someone to help maybe model reefs and such, id be more then willing to help =)

That....
Looks phenomenal.

Sweet. Finally some form of a release :D. Can't wait to try it out myself now :)

Hey folks!
Is there a chance to join for the engine testing? The ocean video looks very cool and I'd like to put my hands on it :)

We are considering to replace a couple of inactive beta testers with some fresh blood. Probably will do it together with switching the account system we are using for a new one, that is meant for the alpha game we are going to release soon.
So, here's your chance. Meanwhile, interested people should be active on the forums :)
Hopefully the demo and game alpha will come out really soon now, opening it to all.

but... omg! this is my first post! how I can be active?? :o
well, I follow the forum more than once a day, is it valid anyway? ;)

I'm a long time lurker. I read this forum everyday but don't have much to say. I'm "active", just don't have anything to say :)
-
this enginge is awesome hope i will ever get a chance to try it out !
-
What is the minimum system requirements for PC which can run Outerra? I'd like to participate but I don't know can my PC run it.
-
Minimum is 8800GT and better graphics card, and a 2-core processor. The card is important, CPU not that much. The latest video by petitfilou http://vimeo.com/user1279567 (http://vimeo.com/user1279567) has been made on his machine with Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.17Ghz, Nvidia GTS 250 512mb
Some people have run it on 8600GT too. Comparable ATI cards are slower because of some performance issues in drivers that are being slowly worked around or fixed by AMD.
Note also that current alpha is not yet fully optimized, it will get better over time.
-
How about single core AMD Athlone 64 3700+?
And as I understand from some posts Outerra need Internet connection always on. What about download/upload speed?
-
With single core processors your experience won't be so smooth. But I think we didn't actually test it yet.
The connection is because Outerra demo downloads the world data progressively, caching them. Once you have downloaded all data for the region you are in, it won't download anything more. The complete dataset is ~13GB but I think no tester has actually downloaded half of it. For a single location and a few tens of km around it you need to download around 100MB. Moving further away will download additional data on the background.
-
I've had problems with some games that needed a dual core processor or SSSE3 instructions, and without them they simply did not run. I hope such problems will not happen with Outerra.
-
The demo is thus based only to real data or something is generated procedurally?

Real data up until the level with ~76m resolution, followed by procedurally generated detail down to 9cm resolution.

Holy Sh**! I found this engine via Youtube just a few hours ago and I'm totally stunned by the complexity of it (besides these awesome graphics).
I've looked for an engine like that for years! Not for consuming it, but for developing a spacegame with it. Is it right that you "only" doing something like a flight- or race-simulator? Shame, there is no game space game with loading free planet streaming. You would totally crush the whole market.
Which language uses the engine? Are multible planets possible? Is it possible to work on this engine? Is there an job posting for required programmers?
I'm a student and are into programming since 4 years in c, c++, delphi, c#, java
(Sorry for so many questions but I think I found my holy grail here ^^ )
-
Maybe you should ask the magic 8 ball. ;D

Some of the questions are answered in the FAQ (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?board=10.0). There are no job postings (yet), but the plan is to open the modding and game making possibilities by evolving our game and its sandbox mode into a platform. Read for example here (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=472.msg5442#msg5442). But first we need to get the public demo out, and start working on the game.
-
Can't wait, any estimation of what will be the price of the pre-orders ?!

Just found out about this via gamestar.de. Awesome project oyu have going here, i would LOVE to see a public demo anytime soon! Awesome awesome awesome :)
Cannot wait to "visit" my hometown's terrain.
-
I've just found Outerra by reading the article over at gamestar.de, too. ^^
I have to say: THIS IS AWESOME!!
As soon as you guys get something out a game dev can work with, i will start a project i had on my mind for quite some time :D
ATM i'm writing my thesis in computer science. When i'm done i would love to contribute something to this project. 3D-Models, Code, ...
So count me in on the "can't wait" club ;)
-
Oh man, first time poster, long time follower.
I'm almost getting Outerra withdrawals and i haven't even used the engine, let alone see it in action properly.
Seeing that the alpha has started makes me oh so happy. :D
Saying i cant wait would be an understatement and i think i speak for everybody here when i say you guys are doing a tremendous job on this engine.
I and so many others are going to be very interested in where this engine leads and what gets made with it.
Keep up the good work and I will continue to follow your guys progress, a bit sad Ati is having issues as thats what i use :p.

Being an admin on a Dutch Flightsimmers website, I try to follow the developments in the 'flightsimworld'.
After ending the MSFS series, Microsoft is teasing us with Microsoft Flight previews, Austin Meyer is about to release X-Plane 10, FlightGear is stil going strong, Ilan Papini (known from Micro Flight) created Vehicle Simulator and after years of coding and recoding Fly! is back, now called Fly! Legacy.
And of course I'm following what's going on here at Outerra! Talking about teasing! ;D
I realize Outerra is not a Flight Sim but seeing the movie made by Richard Vaucher.... wel, is there still room for one more in the 'Can't Wait' club? :)
Screens, movies, it all looks stunning! :P
Are there plans to release SDK's in the future, so people can create airports and other sceneries? There's a lot of knowledge out there!
Regards,
Theo ;)

I want to try outerra for the planes and helis (and for see the location where I live), i am waiting to try it from when i found it (january 2010....), cameni could you please make more ppl try it ?

Hi there,
i'm following your development for quite some time now (since 2009 i guess) and i really like the way this engine is going. The technical aspects and possibilities are endless, keep up this great work.
Like i said, i was a lurker in the forum by now but if needed i want to offer my help.
I would like to test the game on the linux platform. I'm a very experienced linux user, ten years by now. I could test the game with wine (a compatibility layer to execute windows binaries on linux) or a native binary if available in the future.
Here are some stats about my hardware:
CPU: i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz quadcore
Gfx: Nvidia Gforce 275 GTX
Gfx driver: 290.10
RAM: 8 GB
Would like to hear from you guys. Anyway, i will keep a close eye on your work. :)

Hi Andy. Yes, we are interested to get it working on Linux, though a native support will take some time. WINE should be a quicker path. I guess OpenGL and OpenAL will be more or less ok. I'm a little bit more worried about the state of asynchronous file/net transfers (asynchronous completion ports in Windows) in WINE. We were having issues even on different Windows versions with it ...
-
Hi cameni,
the engine specification sounds great, opengl should run pretty good in wine, like you said.
Let me know if you need a tester regarding the network stuff.
-
Will there be possibility windows users can play multiplayer with linux and mac ?
-
Likely .. the network protocol should be the same.
-
Just wondering if we could get an official "can't wait" club stickyed?
-
But that's the whole forums... :P
-
CPU: Intel Pentium D @ 3.00GHz Dualcore
Gfx: Nvidia Gforce 250 GTS
Gfx driver: 285.58
RAM: 3 GB
HDD: 1TB
OS: XP SP3
My CPU is Mid-Grade Stock it runs TDU 2 lag free , RoR kinda Slow, Grid Fair, FSX Ok
All are Maxed out

I'm a very long time lurker, so pleased to see you're getting close to showing everyone the power of Outerra! Im patient, so am very happy to watch others beta test- but pleeze, post more pics??!!!! Australia? Red centre??
So, are you guys still open to being middleware for other devs? Or have u realized the potential and keeping it ALL for your greedy selves :-)
I've seen the gobsmacking Truesky, combine this with THAT and you have a world beater. Congrats.

We're basically not posting anything now because we want to finish the tech demo and don't want to tease people endlessly. I apologize for lack of the updates, but we really want to get this done as quickly as possible. Sadly, making a more user-friendly UI turned out to be a more demanding task than we expected, mainly because we are no UI designers and programmers.
We still want to support other devs, and specifically the indie ones. We'll post more info about that after the release.
-
Make it so that there's no way at all to close the program. That should be fun. ;D
-
It will be worth the effort and wait to get the Gui correct/friendly.
Also remove the esc key to exit the engine... That one still throws me off.

Already done :)

Hi, is the user interface all that remains for you to complete?
How is it running on AMD GPU's?
-
Yes, UI is what we need to complete for the release.
AMD drivers since the version 11.11 work with Outerra, and since the version 12.01 (preview) they no longer crash randomly when placing roads (specific to 4xxx line of cards).
However, there's still some performance penalty when using AMD GPUs (when comparing to similar Nvidia ones), so the drivers still aren't tuned that well. But it should be getting better.

I would really love to try out the closed beta. I have just found this engine and it looks like it will be very successful and looks very promising. I am fluent in Java and pretty good in C++ and would love to check this out!
My specs:
AMD x6 1055T
Radeon HD 6950
8 GB Ram
1 TB HDD
AMD Drivers 12.1 - Win 7 x64 ULT.
Thank you.
-
I would like to join the beta as well please, thank you.
-
Been lurking on forums since you launched the site and i would love to join the close-beta :) Me and several of my friends think your engine is amazing!
My specs are:
Gtx 570 overclocked
i5 2500k
8gb of ram
Severel TB of HDD
Windows 7 64 ultimate

We (the public) should be "arriving" in a couple/few weeks or so, guys. Hehe. We're "almost there." lol ;)

Wonder how I missed that.

LOL, my brain needs a vacation. You got me here for a sec, I completely forgot about the backstory and wondered, what is he talking about?
Given the fact that I have made that screen precisely with that meaning ... ::) ;D

So... Cameni... how did life on Earth end? I think it would be best if it went like this this. :P

(watch the beginning if you want an explanation of the video lol)

:D
Won't reveal it yet, giving Shawn a chance to write the story where he could sell it with a better effect.
Provided he can find the time and the muse while playing his Star Wars games ;)
-
I hope he releases his idea for review before the committee prior to going public. I mean.. what if he gets drunk and writes a horrible story for the game!
Maybe a mad-libs style script with all the nouns and adjectives removed to be filled in by everyone in the forums. That is how all the block-buster games are written these days. :P

Nearly every sentence will have "smelly," "poop," "toilet," and "boobies" in it. ;D
-
Hehe, actually I've made a bit of progress on the story ;)
I'm currently reworking one part, because I think my physics/math is off.
I'm getting some other research done too, for a "crucial" point in the novella. Unfortunately, certain cosmic forces that could literally happen in the next ten years may force me to rethink using that plot device.
And as for how humanity ended, it ends when ...
... I tell it to end ;)

Oh, and I just had to add:
I've been writing a lot of the story on my iPad. Last Monday I flew to San Jose, CA for business, and brought it along so I could finish up a couple of the chapters. On Thursday, I was running late getting to my flight, and a ticket agent sent me to the wrong line. I set my iPad down on the desk, tried to get the machine to spit out my boarding pass, and when I looked up, she had apparently already placed it on the conveyor belt for checked baggage. I didn't realize it until about 10 minutes later.
SOOO, my iPad is somewhere in California at the moment, awaiting FedEx to send it back home to me :p
I know Captain Amanda Pierce won't be looking forward to its return ... I was currently writing a part of the novel where things get a bit rough for her :p

Sounds like this will be showing up sometime soon. If possible I love to be part of the beta, have done game development (models/scripting missions/basic coding) before, even some at university but nothing major or worth hanging on the wall :(
For me I have been mostly waiting for a decent flexible ultra large scale engine to come out and Outerra looks to fit the bill, maybe I will look at indie development in my spare time one day who knows.
Anyway system specs below.
AMD 4x @ 3.6ghz
4GB DDR3 Memory
Nvidia 560 Ti 1024MB Video Card
Windows 7 64bit
TrackIR and dual screen (if needed for testing sometime?)
Best of luck with the UI, from what I seen so far, simple and basic is fine for a alpha/beta.
-
If you need a tester , i would like to help :)
-
and i follow this project from a long time ago ... i cant wait!!! :)
-
i was following all the project but I had nothing to say.
-
Ok good
-
This project looks amazing; an entire planet locally rendered on my pc? That is enough to make anyone drool, anyone who actually appreciates the technological hurdles that is. The possibilities are endless, and i would gladly pay $60 to demo this game rather than on the Call of the Battlefield 3: Modern Combat. Keep up the good work!
-
amazing, i saw this amazing engine and i have to say it looks 1000% ORIGINAL. which means it has no garbage graphics, sounds, or effects. GREAT ENGINE :D
-
Maybe I can help to test engine.
Specs of my PC in signature.
-
They don't accept people to test the pre alpha anymore ! Read the blodi posts. You'll be able to play and preorder it at demo/alpha release.
