Does anyone know why the changing the helicopter collective does not display anything apart from "engine is off" - even when the engine is definintely on?

2) does it affect in any way the flight or is it just a curiosity ?

Do you mean that the angle of the blades of the collective / cyclic pitch is not simulated. ?
I don't quite understand the question ... sometimes the bus doesn't work, I usually mark in F12 throttle up / down for engine the inverted and Half tabs, both.

I think I've run into this problem before, on my old PC. I never really managed to solve it, only swapping computers seemed to do the trick. Just to be clear, this is affecting both helicopters? Or just one?

It doesn't seem to affect flight, apart from that I cannot tell what the collective is set at.
It just keeps stating "engine is off" in the lower left whenever I press the collective + or collective - buttons.

You can try the huey helicopter mod, which flies much better than the default heli. Also it has a much more correct way of simulating flight controls..
