Title: New patch: 0.7.11.2989
Post by: cameni on March 04, 2012, 04:09:05 pm
Changes since 2985 (http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=686.0):

Patch 2992:

Windows XP users that updated to 2989/2900 version please download and run this patch manually: Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2992.exe (http://outerraworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2992.exe)

I am amazed at how fast these patches are rolling out. Keep up the great work!
Applied the patch and everything seems to be fine. I was getting 23 FPS with Aero, now I am getting 28, but then I turned terrain resolution from 480p to 360p and now I run at a smooth 35-40 at 5760x1080. I'm loving it!

Unable to place any static objects.  The axes are flickering when I select a portion of the ground.  Also, the bounding box shows up, and I'm able to "level" the ground underneath, just can't place the object itself.

Strange, I can still place objects normally.

Hmm, no idea what could cause this, what changes did you make in the configuration?

I'm still able to place objects fine.

Hmm, no changes.  Maybe it was a one-off fluke.  I'll test it again here shortly.

(Was going to attach the log file, but it's too large :p)

I hope it works for you. Maybe try a re-install quick. Also I don't want to make a thread but people are talking that the scale is off. Here is a picture showing that the trees are larger than houses:

Graphics fluke.  All objects were properly placed, just didn't show up during placement.

That's quite normal, isn't it? A good spruce is 20–60 meters high. That picture is somewhere from Norway, I guess there should be some low shrubs there, bit it doesn't mean that the scale is off - the biome is off.

Good point. I just see other people complaining that it's off on this forum: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1023847 (http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1023847)
I personally think it's fine but I just wanted to bring it up to see what you had to say. Thanks for clearing it up!

Ok, I thought maybe I did something wrong with the WinXP64 fixes, a fluke then :)

Yup, a FOV of 60 was way too low.  Somewhere between 90-100 seems about right to me.  Maybe somewhere between 95-100?

Yeah, raising the terrain detail up to 1080 dropped my performance drastically.

But Outerra trees aren't even 10 metres tall. I'd say the scale is a bit off as well. I think it's most obvious on mountain tops. If you know some well enough, go there and you'll see all objects in the Outerra world should be a lot smaller to match the real scale.

I was going for 120 fov at 720p but then my gpu slapped me in the face.  :P

It didn't :)

Did you try raising the FOV?  That could definitely change how the sizes look.

Going any higher in FOV in outerra is silly in it's current state. Your going to lose all the scale of the mountains and cliffs. Would you really rather see 2 feet to your left and right vs being able to make out fine detail at a distance? That is the tradeoff. More everything vs more fine detail.

Also Cameni if you could add a key bind with modifier to adjust your FOV on the fly. Also in the future having separate FOV in vehicle / per vehicle and also per camera would be good.

Trees are around 30m +- random value. Every object has its real size: the truck, the planes, the person model. Do you expect to see dwarf pine up there, and the size of spruce confuses you?

That's weird, I was testing it on Win XP 64, worked just fine and nothing related to dll loading was changed anyway.
Does the program generate crash.log or any of the logs when you delete them first?

Field of View option now is perfect!  My computer also didn't like my previous 1080p setting once I upped my FOV to 90.

One thing I'd like to see is an unlocked initial conditions spawning menu.  I know it might lock up people's games when they ram into a hill at 20000 kts, but maybe have it scale with altitude like it does now but at a higher rate.  Also like to see a pitch initial condition setting like there is on the camera.  Or if that's too risky, maybe a separate config file we could edit to change the initial conditions of our aircraft when we spawn it.  Would love to easily put my plane into orbit and observe the earth as it moves slowly below me at 17000 mph  ;D

I have a rather vague bug report. Sometimes when playing my game will act funny, then BSOD on exit. Last time it happened I spawned a Cessna in orbit and it didn't move or respond to anything, upon exit of the game, BSOD. Happenes about 2-3 times a day for me. Perhaps something isn't being handled right on exit of the game?

After the program has installed the last patch it crashes, then it displays that message and nothing else happens. Same when trying to start the program.
No .log generated after patch installation. I attached "eng.log" just in case. Everything worked fine before the patch (except occasional crashes).

Ok, I'll be looking at it, meanwhile you can download an earlier version (the latest full install was Outerra Anteworld-0.7.11.2982 (http://goo.gl/dmIUh)), and after install run it with -noupdate switch

Cameni do you think the FOV option should be switched to Vertical? How will it currently handle it if someone adds triple screens?  If you're on 60° and add two more monitors and start the game will that number increase in game but not in the menu or will it just keep the entire width viewable to 60°?  I hate games that say Horizontal fov = 90 mean while it very clearly isn't taking the other screens into account.

Also do you have plans (future plans) to render two, three, six screens at individual angles around the player so they can be matched with real life hardware? I think we discussed this a while ago but it is good to refresh my memory.

Actually FOV is stored and internally handled as vertical (check eng.cfg), only when displaying it it's recomputed to horizontal, as people are more used to that. The range also changes when you change the aspect ratio. If you select a mode that's 32:9, the displayed angle should double.

Yes, the plan is to support separate views too, so the distortion can be minimized.

Patch 2990 fixes an issue with Win XP crashing upon start with version 2989 (dwmapi.dll not found). Those who already bricked their install, here's a direct patch download:
Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2990.exe (http://outerraworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2990.exe) (can be applied to any version since 2968)

I'm having a problem where I try and launch Outerra, nothing happens. As in, nothing at all. This was before the newest patch was applied (I believe). I tried a re-install of Outerra and when I try and launch it, nothing happens. The "thinking" wheel on the mouse appears for a second, then nothing, no window. What could be wrong?

Please check if there's a crash.log file created in your home/outerra dir. What is your OS version?

I'm not at my computer now but the crash log said something to the extent of "Invalid Syntax", and that was it. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Title: Re: New patch: 0.7.11.2989
Post by: cameni on March 05, 2012, 12:44:48 pm
Did you modify cfg files by hand? There's probably a syntax error in one of them (but it may have been caused also by the program itself, erroneously).

I did not modify anything, but my computer BSOD'd on closing the program, including the time before the current problem. Since then I've reinstalled the whole program, so it should not have left remains?

Must have been the crash that corrupted something. I uninstalled with Revo so I just assumed it got the settings folder. I manually deleted it and it worked. Thank you.

Though it still crashes my OS about one out of every three times I exit Outerra.

Ah much better at loading terrain at 1080 now.
All those bumpy mountains and I still can't drive on them.  ::)  :P Just kidding.  I'm patient.

My personal wishlist in order:
1. Improved road making
2. Updated ground/vehicle collision
3. 3D model importer, More vehicles
4. I don't care.  :P  (Online Multiplayer?)

New patch - 0.7.11.2992
  • fixed startup issue with Win XP for real  ::)
  • relaxed the coefficient that reserves GPU memory with adjusted terrain quality - previous one was too pessimistic and used much more than it actually needed

Windows XP users that updated to 2989/2900 version please download and run this patch manually: Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2992.exe (http://outerraworld.com/appdata/Anteworld/Anteworld-0.7.11.2968.patch-2992.exe)

Works better than ever now ! Thanks a ton ! I didn't even have time to say that patch 2990 didn't work  :)
