This is an Idea and a suggestion.

It's an indie title that really makes me want to pilot mechs. The maps look fantastic.. But it would be better in outerra.

Y'know i think Outterra could fit in with the whole Mechwarrior franchise.

They have differing planets and factions to fight over.

I dont see why not.

I can see one problem with it - the mechs will be lost in the huge world. I think it can degrade the fun they are having in the condensed environment now, bu supposedly another game play style could evolve for large open areas.

For all kinds of terrain, some kind of dropship could be handy (for mechs, tanks and troops):

Or the mechs could be used almost exclusively for urban combat.
I suppose when using the entire earth as a battleground,
choosing a combination of different units (mechs, planes etc.) will be necessary.

Well yeah thats what i was getting at. The fact mechs can be the specialisation doesnt detract from it.

The biggest problem is filling the size of the world with content. But i suppose whatever idea comes out first could be applied to almost any game type?

cameni, what sort of graphics do you think this engine could support with say an MMO format. Whats the most units you could have in one battle on screen with say...ArmA 1 graphics, or is that really up to a developer?

Well, the part that's up to a developer is how AI and entity simulation is managed, and the models. As for the rendering of a large number of objects, that will have to be supported by us. The limits mostly depend on quality of LOD management for objects, provided the models come with proper LOD representations.

We are quite focusing on it, the size of the world mandates that it is tuned well. Also, doing thing in a way that plays well with graphics hardware helps a lot; otherwise OT would not be here at all :)

Does it make a difference on the graphics side,
if you use lots of servers to support many players ?

No, the rendering part is separate from networking and simulation. Poor performance of the latter would manifest as erroneous movement of some objects, while others are still moving smoothly. There could be a lot of servers covering different areas each (zones), switching player seamlessly across the boundaries. Easier said than done, though :)

I can't wait until we have in excess 1 Gbps up/download speed.

We're hitting 25+ Gbps for LAN, but the current infrastructure in the UK/USA is insufficient.

Any comments?

Im sure the UK recently put forward a motion to greatly improve our internet.

Countries like Sweden have enjoyed vastly higher broadband connections for years now.

A way around having 100's players on screen with reduced enough lag is one of the last frontiers of gaming IMO.

Giant battles without the lag, but with better graphics and quality of movement than your usual MMO's of today.

But then thats me talking about an MMO again.

Hmm, this thread for some reason makes me think of Planetside, but with Outerra.

I take hope from the fact that 10/20 years ago the game we have now would not have been possible.
In the same way, a few years ahead, and we greatly surpass what we have at the moment.

On top of this, we're seeing tons of advancement in processors.  Today, single chips can do the work of what a small server farm did 5 years ago.  Probably just as important is the MMO/networking coding breakthroughs being made with the MMO blowup in the last few years.

Mech combat is something I been wanting to see in this engine sense I first seen the engine..

http://www.moddb.com/games/assault-knights-reign-of-steel

and I have plenty of mechs I could donate to this project if the developer wanted to add them. Plus many more models as well. The link above is for my own mech combined arms indi game. Assault Knights. I would be willing to move my entire project to this engine and help get a mech sim started on here. Plus I know plenty of other people who would love a mech simulation game built from a engine like this.
