In addition to gaming this 3D Navigator Mouse, by 3dConnection's, is really applicable to running visual simulations. It's a 3D mouse. It's use is extremely intuitive. I use one when navigating in Google Earth(the program, not the plugin).

Once you use it you'll never go back to a regular 2-D mouse.

Of course support for it has to be built into the application.
