Terrain parts become blurry more often after update?
« on: March 02, 2012, 09:38:22 am »

Hi,

I might be very well mistaken but I noticed that after the update, when flying the cessna over the terrain, parts of it become very blurry and takes some time to refresh and become detailed.

I do not remember encountering this before the update but I might be mistaken as I said.

Also when the terrain is blurry and I hit 3 to initiate the truck on ground level and force a refresh, sometimes the truck sinks in the terrain. Maybe it does not have anything to do with the fact that it is blurry but slope collisions?

Cheers

Hmm please check your terrain settings. By default the terrain quality is set to 480p, please check if it didn't change to a higher value. With higher quality settings one has to adjust the limit-fractal as well, otherwise the terrain generator occasionally won't have enough free tiles for refinement.

Yeah, I'd say leave everything in the terrain settings default including the resolution.  I messed with them for a while, but couldn't find a setting that worked as well as default.

I find this happened quite often even before the update.  When moving at high speed form high altitude down to ground level - certain tiles will simply not resolve into higher detail, even if you fly away and return to them.

Hi,

Thanks all for the information, will see what I changed because other than graphic settings I did not touch the advanced terrain settings at all.

I agree with "rubbish" this happens especialy when coming from high to low , some tiles take time to refresh

Cheers

yeah 1080p works for a while but over time certain terrain becomes big time blurry, only way to fix it is to drop down to 480p, but even then sometimes blurry terrain can happen.

I hope this bug gets sorted out, would love to run 1080p but after traversing around for a bit parts just don't update to the higher quality meshes like it should.

I'm not exactly sure what that setting actually does at the moment though.  I see absolutely not difference when I switch between the settings and I can be picky about those things.

Did you also adjust limit-fractal with it? Boosting terrain quality requires a bigger terrain cache.

The problem with blurriness (terrain not refining) is currently mainly happening in mountainous regions, where the rendering requires more detailed terrain. On the other hand, currently it generates a lot of stuff in the mountains that's not visible, either because it's occluded or facing away from the camera. When this gets fixed, the issues with non-refining terrain will be solved too.

Just tested out difference between 480 and 1080.  It's so slight I couldn't even show you the difference in a screenshot.

Yes I tried messing with those 2 values you told us about.  Still had a lot more problems with 1080 than with 480.

Depends on where you are testing and what you are looking at. Near detail is clamped, look into distance. Try flying forward from the default location at 480p and watch the forest line and terrain popups. Then try 720p on the same path.

Using 1080p probably brings on another issue - you are more than doubling the pixel quality, but that means 4x more tiles and processing. At boundary conditions it also means you should have 4x the tile limit, otherwise it may not refine the terrain, and even though you have set it to 1080p, you would be actually getting a lower coefficient.

get in plane and fly high, you see big difference with 1080P, distant terrain is nice and sharp with higher detail.

Was this problem officially resolved? Because I seem to have a related issue.

When I look at (for instance) a rock and then away and then quickly back again, it takes a considerable moment for the higher texture to load again. I'd say just under a second.

I didn't touch the terrain settings, but I noticed it was set to 600p. Lowering it to 480p didn't help and neither did changing the resolution. A mate with a better system than mine experienced the same.

My specs are:
Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93 GHz
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti

In some mountainous areas there may not be enough reserved cache memory for the terrain tiles, and you may have to boost the fractal limit in terrain settings.
It will be not such a problem once the terrain occlusion is used in the terrain generator pipeline, as that will reduce the amount of tiles needed to be generated and rendered in mountainous regions.

Yea I also had this problem in mountains. I set the fractal limit to 1000 and it updates much quicker now  :)

Is there an optimal setting for the fractal limit at 1080p resolutions? I just put it at max for now.
