Flora/Vegitation: how many variants?
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:39:15 pm »

heyho,

i remember to read that you will add the diferent climazones with the fitting flora to outerra at some time.

iam wondering how you will handle this massive amount of work that it will take to get the designated quality and quantity?
i would like to know how many different vegitation types you will implement, as the flora is different even in same climatic zones.
it would be awesome (and much much work) to see some characteristic plants and trees for each region, for example china or japan, southern europe, scandinavia, southern america, australia ... all these have their very own looking even if some share the same climatic zone.

another question: how detailed is your reference for climatic zones? will there be varying floral zones like this http://www.m-forkel.de/klima/grafiken/karte_neef.gif or even like this http://www.garten-pur.de/images/euroklima_03.gif ?

but because i cant wait to get my hands on the demo, i hope you realease the demo/alpha with just with one type of vegitation  :D

Ultimately we'd like this to be extensible to the widest coverage, but at least we should somehow cover those 12 or how many basic climate types there are with a few tree/shrub/grass types each. Once the tree generator and whole creation pipeline gets stable and robust it may also become a thing for crowdsourcing - like, building a database of vegetation types together with their sparsity, required conditions (min/max temperature, precipitation ..), images of whole and details etc, with the help of people spread around the globe.

Like this:

The black spots are actually urban areas, these will be probably erased out for the natural layer, or we'll feed it to city/ruin generator later.
