more specifics on vehicle movement
« on: June 04, 2012, 10:38:46 am »

so for vehicles in the outerra engine are they done more traditionally where the vehicle is moved by some unknown force and only turned on when the wheels are touching the ground? or are they done by actually making the driving force the friction of the spinning wheel?

At the moment the engine force is exerted on the wheel hubs, making the wheels rotate only when touching the ground. But that's only temporary until a proper tire model is developed.

Or, better said - games using the engine may choose to use a simplified model or a more realistic one, depending on what they are intending to simulate or focus on. With more realistic model there come other things that need simulating as well - differentials, locks, etc.

Forgive me for not really knowing much about car vocab. I guess a better question to ask would be if we spun a tire all by itself in mid air and dropped it strait down would it propel itself in the direction it's spinning when it hit the ground?
