Outerra FMX 2014 presentation
« on: August 20, 2014, 05:05:10 am »

As some of you have noticed, Angrypig gave a presentation about Outerra at FMX 2014 conference in Stuttgart. We still didn't receive the recording from that session to share with you, but here's an excerpt from the presentation, using HTML5 with some "live" slides showing some of the procedural effects in use in OT:

I always kind of wondered since I first saw it....  Why does the "rock displacement" pretty much only work outwards?  Why doesn't it also work inwards... just to keep closer accuracy to terrain elevation?  Like average it out closer to the default terrain instead of only pushing outwards (of course while making sure it doesn't cause weird kinks, spikes, or gaps).

Inwards are much rarer. It actually does both, but it's biased outwards because it looks better, more natural. You don't see many "rock holes" out there, since they are much more stable erosion-wise.

There was some company info before these slides and some non-procedural engine info after, but they weren't so interesting & animated.

Great presentation. Understandable even for those who have no idea about everything shown there.
