Little moutains ? No, big trees.
« on: January 05, 2018, 10:31:04 pm »

Hi !  :))

I love, really love, Outerra. Every day I launch it, just to appreciate how peaceful and beautiful the world can be without men. But one thing bothered me, especially in the places I know the most. Everything seems realistic, except moutains size. But proportions are ok... I've just figure it out tonight : trees are way too big, making mountains look very small. I've just understand it because I spawned for the first time the soldier, and when he is in the picture, landscape seems as big as in real world !
What a shame to have created such a realistic world, and ruined its greatness with giant trees.  :-[

Again I really love your program, one of the most beautiful and spectacular than I saw until now.

Kisses from France !  :D

This is an interesting thing, how that came to be. We didn't have any reason to make trees big; the average tree height comes from numbers specified by "official" figures for given species. If you turn on the HUD (tab key) showing the elevation, and subtract top and bottom, you get the right numbers. So what's the problem?

Well, after some digging around, apparently the textures of mature trees we used are not of the typical maximum tree height given for most of the species. The reason seems to be that the textures are usually made based on standalone tree samples, because of better accessibility and visibility, but lone trees usually grow shorter (and wider) than ones in groves, where they have to compete for sunlight.
Obviously when the lone tree images are scaled to the height of the grove trees, we get enormous looking ones ...

The easiest way would be to scale them down uniformly, even though not all species are mismatched equally.

This is why I "cut down" the trees with an altered species.cfg (about one third smaller) to get a more realistic scale. Downside: leads to more spacing between the trees and therefore tree density has to be 2-4 times higher.
Tree texture resolution is too low. This also gives a perceived mismatch of scale.

Thank you both for your answers !

Is there a way to do that easily, or should I modify the height of every species one by one ?

I did it, painfully, one by one. But let me say, it's still not a revelation =|

I have juste tried... But I made all the trees disappear !
I prefer big trees to no tree at all :D
Thanks anyway !

Maybe you want to give my modified species.cfg a try. Save your original first!

Ooooh thanks a lot ! I messed up with the "cfg" and "txt" extension !

I red your file, exactly the numbers I tried to put !

I tried it, it looks very good, maybe I'll try others numbers :)
Thanks again ! =D
