3D grass in forest
« on: May 08, 2012, 06:16:48 am »

Another batch of screenshots with 3D grass, from forest and around the rocks. Grass now inherits the ambient light inside the woods and also accounts for terrain displacement so it can correctly render on rocky displaced terrain.

With several optimizations 3D grass now renders 3x that fast as initially, now taking 4ms from the frame time. There are several more optimizations to be done, so it's not the final number yet. Other things to do:
  • short grass should use a slightly different geometry, that will make it look denser with the same performance footprint
  • blades still don't bend how they should
  • tweak the ambient light levels on the ground under the grass

It already blends with the distant bumpy terrain too. The transition works quite good, but I want to make a couple of tweaks to it, once I get the blade bending right.

*Added another with a lighted patch of grass

Outerra really needs 3D trees now, because with a such nice looking grass, it hurts my eyes :)

Just been looking at these pics with brightness/contrast adjustments. The way the grass interacts with the displaced terrain is amazing! It adds a great deal of interest to the scene.

Now all we need is for someone to make a grazing class of animal which trims the grass from medium to short. Or, a lawnmower. Sheep are cooler though.

Lawnmowing Simulator 2013, go! :P

If the grass can grow.. Does that mean we have to/can mow it?

Mowing Simulator 2012?

This looks awesome. This game already looks good with just grass and cardboard trees, I can't wait to see how the flora will look in a few months!

Would it be developed only in full version?

It will, but not in the initial version yet.

Would it be developed only in full version?
Once finished, it should come to the demo version as well. During the work in progress phase it will be available only in the full version.

I'm really looking forward to this update!   :D
