www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/06/john-carmack-is-making-a-virtual-reality-headset-500-kits-available-soon-video-interview-inside/

Someone find specs and get this integrated pronto!

I read about this a little while back in a forum while reading about the Silicon Micro Display "ST1080" HMD (http://www.siliconmicrodisplay.com/st1080-features.html)
The creator of the Oculus "Rift" (http://oculusvr.com) is actually the 'PalmerTech' (Palmer Luckey) guy in this forum thread: http://www.mtbs3d.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=14777
John Carmack posts there also.

I haven't watched the PC Gamer interviews yet, but from what I can tell from the forum is that the main selling point, over for example the ST1080HMD, is going to be the wider FOV.
I think they were aiming for 90° per eye, whereas the ST1080 (and also the Sony HMZ-T1) has 45°, but the ST1080 has a native 1080p display resolution per eye at 60Hz in 2D (and they are developing higher resolution displays at the moment) and the "Rift" has 1280x800 ("Input resolution of 1280×800, split between two eyes."). But it is still a prototype.

Kickstarter for the "Oculus Rift" dev kit is up now:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game

The developers are planning a consumer version with a higher resolution panel due sometime next year. (Edit: at least that is what it said in a post from Mr. Luckey from a few weeks ago)

Finally someone seems to have come up with a break through in immersive virtual reality headsets. Something like this combined with Outerra could bring simulation games to another level.

Always dreamed about such thing.
I'm also up for Outerra to support this kind of things.

So headtracking controls virtual camera motion and mouse used as a virtual hand.

I've always thought for years that the headset idea would allow for a more immersive experience compared to say multiple monitors. Combining this idea with full body motion detection similar to MS Kinect would be mind blowing.

Looks definitely interesting, something like that was bound to happen.

However there's still too little info about it. I was silent while trying to find out info beyond the (understandable) hype. I can only guess that OpenGL is going to be supported with it on consumer cards, and of course it's hard to see how it really works and feels. What are the limitations, how it works with large distances and eye focus, what strain it puts on the eyes ...

Yea, we will be getting one :)

701,000 of a 250,000 goal.. I'd say we will see them soon.

Technical comments from John Carmack based on the prototype unit he's been using and conversations with Palmer:

Quote
The display is a single 1280x800 panel; each eye only sees a 640x800 image stretched across the huge field of view. The perceived resolution is therefore much lower than even previous generation consumer HMDs. If you are looking for high resolution, this isn't for you. For immersion, the high FOV is much, much more important, though.

It is not wireless.
The prototype was analog VGA, but I think the kickstarter versions are DVI.

Everyone commented on how light the prototype was, especially compared to the Sony HMD.

The early prototype could not be worn with glasses. If you modify it to stand off far enough from the face to allow glasses, the fov will be reduced a lot. One reason it can be so light is that it has smallish lenses very close to your eyes. With the limited resolution, you don't really need 20/20 effective vision.

I hope someone experiments with the kits and builds a variable focus version, but the standard system is fixed focus.

The resolution will absolutely go up, and quickly. Especially now with the huge amount from the Kickstarter (and still most of the month remaining...).

Hopefully the commercial models will be out next year, and they add variable DOF too. I've ordered mine, can't wait to play around with it! :D

I think I heard Carmack say that there would be a higher definition version as well, but that it would be (understandably) more expensive.

I had my own thoughts on how to build something SIMILAR with entirely different tech. I kind of want to keep it to myself incase their is money to be made. But at the same time I know I don't have the capitol or know-how to pull it off electronically/physically so why not tell everyone.

Plus mine would be 2304x1024 and possibly lighter weight. Way more expensive however.

I can't wait to get my hands on one of these. I have pledged $332 to get my peepers on the early version

Gahh, I want one.

I'd rather wait and buy it separately for $200. Hopefully the game list grows fast.
