As to resolution, there's definitely a point where the benefits are outweighed by the need to calculate for more pixels.  I fly X-Plane in a full size cockpit using a 42" HDTV, but only use the 1600 x 900 resolution.  Frame rates are much better, and the outside view at altitude is very acceptable.

What's the native resolution of that HDTV? Most likely it's 1080p (1920x1080) and for optimal image quality it should be running at 1920x1080. Not to mention that trying to spread out 1600x900 resolution over 42” is going to leave a lot to be desired as far as image quality is concerned.

I also run X-Plane 9&10 but haven't seen too much of a performance hit when cranking up the resolution. For the most part from my experience it's primarily CPU bound so running it at higher resolutions (1920x1200+) with a decent video card has little or no effect on frame rates.

It's just a Best Buy Dynex el cheapo.  It's good enough for X-Plane quality graphics.  I'll have to do some more experimenting!

When I start spooling up my involvement in Outerra/Anteworld and get my jet and cockpit converted over, then I'm going to have to reassess.  I'm running a reasonable card at the moment - a GTX 285 Classified with a gig of vram.

I had a GTX 285 FTW a few years back, it was a very good card. I can't say how well it would do with X-Plane 10 but X-Plane 9 ran very well with it. At the time I was running a Intel Core 2 (E8600) setup with it.

For those who were worried about having to deal with eBay in order to get a South Korean 2560x1440 led lighting for an affordable price, good news: a USA based company called Niexus is going to be offering a 27" 2560x1440 monitor for $430.  AnandTech has the scoop, and a link to where you can pre-order: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6131/nixeus-vue-27-a-430-wqhd-2560x1440-sips-led-monitor
