just want to offer a comparison screenshot of Lockheed Martin's Prepar3d Flight simulator versus Outerra real time planet rendering project.

The screenshot of Prepar3d uses ORBX NZSI including 10 metre terrain elevation mesh with REX textures and OpusFSX weather engine.

Outerra is stock standard in Alpha. The only thing I have adjusted using internal setting is exposure of the sun and Field Of View to a more realistic level based on my experience flying and how far terrain, water etc... appears. also it uses standard SRTM 90 metre elevation mesh (all 11GB of it)

Make of this what you will but absolute potential for Outerra to be a future platform for a Flight Simulator among other things.

Hopefully this will raise some hope that there will be positive things to come relating to the Flight Simulator Genre.

Cheers,

Kelvin

The comparison is very cool, Kelvin.  Now do it with the same sun angle - preferably the dramatic angle seen in the Outerra capture.  Just for grins.  Would also like to see the same shot in X-Plane 10....what's the FOV setting, lat, lon, altitude and heading?

Shoot...just recognized Milford Sound in the GE map.  One of my favorite airports in X-Plane.  :)

Yes, FTX is used in the first shot.

This screenshot comparison is of Dusky Sounds New Zealand. Both screenshots were taken at 5am and Summer season.

Seems like different times of day are going to look better in one sim but not the other, and that it's not always the same sim that will win.  The top image here says "I'm a photograph."  In the first pairing, it was the lower that won that prize.

Yeah you're right there. However, I think once the Biomes are applied then I think we will start to see Outerra screen ahead. I do think the lighting is a little saturated and washed out by default, not sure but just not quite seem there. Mind you it is still in development of course.

That's true.  And different levels of apparent "humidity" will affect the look.  The P3d looks like a crisp, clear morning in early summer, the Outerra seems more the muggy late summer setting.  OT feels more "volumetric."

Except for one thing.

In "summer," New Zealand is snowy.  ;)
