Blurry texture in distance
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:55:58 am »

As per my picture below, is there any way to eliminate the blurry textures in the distance so that it's nice and sharp. Seems like LOD radius is quite small causing this but it only seems to happen with the roads.

There's an internal setting for that, I can put it into the config.

Would you be able to preset the view distance to maximum and have an adjustable slider to reduce the LOD radius perhaps this would be useful for those who have less suitable hardware. It also looks like Antialiasing is managed by the application, si this so and if so, could this be managed by the hardware?

Roads are a part of the terrain system, so the reduction of detail directly depends on your terrain quality. But there's also a separate coefficient that boosts the quality for tiles that have roads on them, that's the one I was talking about.

Ah, I see. I actually noticed that when playing around with higher res road textures and left my terrain settings the same I would see a higher redraw of those textures as I got closer.

About the aliasing - the way the roads are integrated allows for nice seamless transitions to the surrounding terrain, unfortunately it also means that antialiasing works only partway. Right now there's no antialiasing in the code that paints roads on terrain, that's the main cause of the aliasing. It's going to be fixed with enhanced road generator.

Another problem is that the LOD system is getting into a bit of conflict with the anisotropic filtering, and only a higher terrain quality setting helps here, or a higher resolution of terrain tiles (from certain level) will. That's also planned for a HQ version of terrain textures, but that will need a texture artist and lots of tweaking, not a priority right now.

I agree with having options to reduce quality, but increase it also. I was playing about with the code and extended the grass distance to 200 meters. It looked amazing, but my mid range computer could only handle about 10 frames a second. It would be great to extend all values above maximum and wait for the tiles to load effectively rendering a high quality image which can be used for desktop backgrounds. I might try to play about with this on the weekend and see what happens.

Hmm I think I didn't put it there yet. It would be in world.cfg
