Freezing problem and video conversion problem
« on: February 19, 2013, 10:14:28 pm »

So, I recently installed Anteworld, and have come across a few problems. The first is that the game will freeze when reaching about 2.5gb usage resulting in me having to use task manager to shut the program down. No bug report windows pops up. I have 64gb of ram and 24 cores, so maybe it has something to do with the multithreading (if it even has that capability)? I can attach screen shots if i need too. The other is the problem with the ffmpeg. I cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong when it comes to trying to convert the file. I get buffer errors and invalid char errors. The only thing I can think of is that there is too much information trying to be coded. I've no idea where to turn on these two issues. Thanks for the help!

Anteworld is 32bit program so the usable memory is below 3GB (with system taking 1GB). But I didn't hit the limit myself yet, what's your OS version & what are you doing?

The ffmpeg converter produces some errors you mention, but it doesn't affect the output. Try to capture a short video and convert it using conv.bat, does the resulting avi play?

I've updated Outerra yesterday and managed to convert a YOG file to AVI, so no issues here.
I've put the conversion software in the same folder as where the Outerra videos are stored.
Using Windows7 - I just drag the .YOG file onto the .BAT file and the Black DOS screen just pops up with the bytes processing away.

I'm using windows 7 64-bit SP1. I've got the graphics maxed out as much as I can and am running it at  2560x1600. I'm basically just flying around UFO style. As far as the video goes, I tried what you said, and it still didn't work. It gives me an .avi file about 6kb big. I've also tried several external programs like winff and to no avail.

Can you attach the eng.log (zipped) from such a short video recording session?

I will when I get off work. Also, I'd like to mention what a beautiful sim you have made. I can't wait until you have the ability to make clouds. Being able to fly through cumulonimbus clouds and thunderheads....gets me all tingly inside. I would like to also throw my hat into the ring for soundtrack music. I think I can write you a pretty decent theme. You can listen to my work at www.ehscore.bandcamp.com and let me know if you dig the style. If you do, I can write you a couple of pieces.

Hmm there are several issues, though I can't see anything wrong with regards to the video. But lets fix those issues first.
  • go to terrain settings and boost the values of limit-wavelet, limit-treetile a bit
with higher quality setting it needs a larger tile cache, especially in mountains, otherwise it fights a lot for tiles
  • there are some proxy resolver errors, go to control panel, internet options, connections, lan settings, and make sure "automatically detect settings" is turned off

It should still be able to capture the video, you should try setting vertical sync to half refresh in graphics settings and test it with that.

Music - there was a recent thread about it here, we can surely try including a demo track in the demo and see how it's going to work.

So I tried bumping the values of the wavelet and treetile and now whenever I get close to the ground, maybe 5-10 ft, it starts to tear and turn white, sometimes to the point where it goes transparent and I can see through the map. The video was already set to half sync, and I was thinking about turning it down more to 24 or 25 sync in my nvidia options. no more problems with the proxy resolve though. I might just reinstall the game to get the original settings back.

EDIT: This is the text I get when trying to convert. Which is followed by a force close on ffmpeg

Maybe the ffmpeg encoder has a problem with the 2560x1440 size. Did you try it with 1920x1080?

I have. It looks to be that some videos work and others don't. I tried recording a new video at both 1080p and 2560x1440. Both converted... soooooo I've got no clue. Probably just a bad recording.
