Atmospheric scattering during sunrise?

Maybe it's just me, but I've never seen a sunrise in real life where i can see the sun about to come up on one side of the sky and a band of total darkness across the opposite side. I think there needs to be some accounting for atmospheric light scattering or some such as there's never quite this stark a contrast visible on the ground...

Yep that's a lack of secondary atmospheric scattering that normally has only a miniscule effect, except in cases like these. On the list of TODO things ...
