Wow looks like the Fractopolis airport has taken a little bit of a beating. :P  They look good.

Are these ready enough to be in the next development version?  I'm planning on picking up a new video card this weekend, so I should be able to play around with Outerra again.

Looks good. Small improvement could be, if possible, to generate some cracked asphalt slices around the edges of the craters to make them a bit more 'rough' and not so perfectly round. But anyway dynamic things are always awesome at game engines of this scale. :)

I think you should add a modifier that not only calculates an explosions force but also a trajectory. Say a meteor hits at a 45° angle it would make a teardrop shape and throw the debris in the opposite direction. Would look amazing..

Also my friend brought up a question on if a smaller crater can be formed in a larger one and then I wondered if two craters form next to each other and overlap what is the result?

From what I've read, the impact crater shape is always circular.
"In the case of astronomical impacts, though, the physical shape and direction of approach of the meteorite is insignificant compared with the tremendous kinetic energy that it carries."

They can overlap normally, there are some screens showing it too.

I want to add some explosion effects there before the release.

Yeah, at least a basic particle effect with solid particles of dirt, later some smoke ...

Well, that article says also that the craters may be elliptical if the astoroid comes from a very shallow angle. I have a clear image in my mind of a very elliptical crater on mars. I'll try to find a photo.

EDIT: here it is: http://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/mars-crater.jpg

Multiple varying-size craters stacked on top of each other:

Cool! Now that you did vertical holes, are you going to do horizontal ones? (that is, tunnels, caves,...) ;)

I want to add some explosion effects there before the release.

Does that mean you'll be adding some sort of "weapon" to make the craters?  It would seem weird if there was an explosion every time you "place" a crater on the terrain, assuming the crater interface is similar to how you place road nodes.
