Unlimited Detail Engine
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:10:54 pm »

Hello,

This is my first post on this forum, the technology of the Outerra Engine is interesting but I have seen a fairly recent new technology 3D engine based on the idea of using atoms to build the 3D world without the use of polygons, and all in software, no hardware acceleration.

The software company is based in Brisbane Australia,  http://www.euclideon.com.

What do you think of this technology for your Outerra project ?

There has been a thread about it way back: http://www.outerra.com/forum/index.php?topic=389.0

There's little to no info about how it works, which kind of smells. But looking at other such projects that are much more honest and less smokey, like the Procedural World or Atomontage, these have some very nice properties. Generally it's all about various approaches to compression of the scene data; OT uses its own techniques to get both the planetary scale and the ground level detail.

We also have some ideas how to gain some of the capabilities of these engines, but combining the advantages while not carrying over the disadvantages is by no means a trivial task.

It would seem that Euclideon is about to resurface, they posted a video this morning showing their Geospatial software. They also say in the description of the video that they haven't given up on gaming.

Has a great potential in historical-items digitalization and preservation ...

I think Miguel Cepero summed it up pretty well here: http://procworld.blogspot.com/2013/05/euclideon-geoverse-2013.html

Appears to be a few new testimonies that seem to support this engine

And now they'll disappear for another year or 2 before they show us animation.

As i said - " historical-items digitalization and preservation" ... doe, i see that none of that machines will hit SVK for another two decades as even our single deep-layer (for wall and painting research) did not much work till yet. ...

their technique makes animation pretty much impossible, as well as dynamic lighting or moving objects or anything that stops the scene from being static.
