environment lighting at night
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:01:50 am »

Could see a topic for this one so started a new one

Outerra is very dark after dark. I keep bumping into things. Are there any plans to update the environment lighting after dark so it is not pitchblack? I don't beleive there is ever such think as pitch black at night due to the moon and stars. Ok, so there is no moon as of yet, but the stars are there which should produce some light.

Yes it's going to be handled. There's an exposure parameter already, that can be used to boost the light levels, emulating the adaptive sensitivity of the human eye. The exposure is being already adjusted during the day to compensate for changing light levels, but at night it's clamped to some value. Actually it's not pitch black, the ambient light level at night is quite visible for me (it depends on your monitor settings). We can make it adjustable though.

What's missing is the loss of chromatic perception at low light levels. When the light goes down, the colors will slowly fade to grey shades.

Is this correct? how will this affect the precence of lights in the scene if the colours are going to be greyscale (I may have mis-interpreted).

Well, that's how the eye works, so that will at least add in realism.

It depends on the intensity of light. Below a certain threshold we are unable to perceive the color, but bright small lights will be still colorful. Larger bright lights tend to suppress the night vision altogether and blind you, since the eye needs a few minutes to adapt the sensitivity.

Except for the red light that doesn't blind us :)

well I learnt something here today! I went for a walk in the dark last night just to check it out, then went to a part of town where there were a load of red lights and yes, I could see better! There was this real pretty lady standing at one of the corners and you could see everything. I said "I can see you!" and she ran away. Shame because I was going to tell her about Outerra.

I'll look forward to an update to the night time environment lighting in due course. I often wonder how cameni finds time to respond to the increasing amount of questions on this forum as well as work on the engine. Keep up the good work!

Hi, guys!

I got a feature request for lighting: is the landing light from the aircraft, street lighting, and city lights at night. Thanks!

I bet outerra has lighting on its road map. Seriously, there is no need for such an obviously request.

Not sure if aircraft lights are modelled yet, flight is still very much in its infancy. It was discussed a while ago about building lights - obviously not all are on all the time, and those that are on will go off with random frequency.

Cameni - you say that as things get dark your eye picks up more grey than other colours. What if there was a single bright light in the distance... would your surroundings still be grey, or would the 'eye' change to deal with that light, rendering the surrounds pitch black? More practical use I guess - supposing a lumpman/burglar/special forces is creeping around at night. It shines a torch in your face - would the user be 'blinded' for a few seconds?

It's not that the eye picks more gray than the other colors, but as the light goes down we lose the ability to distinguish between the various wave lenghts of the light, and all we see is the intensity of it, resulting in a vision in shades of grey.
(See cone and rod eye cells)

EDIT: Duh, forget stupid part...

The engine used in Arma 2 and 3 include loss of colour perception at night FYI

Can you add a second light source fixed directly at the opposite end of the earth, to give the presence of the moon?
To light up the night sky.
