Looking for Terrain dev specialist
« on: May 08, 2013, 05:03:08 am »

Hi,

I am currently working on an hobbyist project where we have lots of moons to generate, I think it's very promising. They are small moons between 5 to maybe 15 Km radius and the precision should be 1 metres. The technique used is, I think something unique but there is still a lot to do and a lot to try. It of course involve GPU and CPU.
I am myself developing the rest of the prototype which is the game mechanism, the network, the database, the UI, sounds etc...
Now I need a programmer that knows DirectX 9 and knows about terrain LOD system, procedural generation and texturing and all those stuffs.
The aim of this prototype is to go as fast as possible to community funding. There is quite a lot done already but I'm missing that terrain which is awkward of course.
As soon as we have an integration of the terrain in game things will accelerate. The project has been thought so it wouldn't need a lot of graphical assets.

Now for those of you who are interested or sceptical, here is a bit more.
I have worked in the game industry for a bit more than 10 years. The project is not based on any engine, it's build on directX9 using Rakknet for the network side. I'm no genius and that's why I'm looking for more members now. The project is first a hobby, I do it because I like creating things but I have a strong believe that the mechanism could potentially attract lots of players. It's a space opera tank FPS shooter, to summarize.
A also do realise what it takes so that's why I'm not promising anything.
Unfortunately life has made that I'm left alone on the project right now. I can't do everything alone and even I'm not feeling good enough to take those moons generation back.
But it would be a great shame just to stop and drop everything now. Major game mechanisms are already working. The plan was to look for an artist as soon as we get a moon integrated in game.

If you are interested in terrain generation and have some experience already, please PM me.

Sounds good - space opera is right up my street :)
Alas, I'm only good at typing answers, but I hope you find someone. Would you treat the moons as spherical maps on which to play? They don't seem to be that large (5km^3 x 4/3 x pi is some decent surface area (apologies if equation was wrong :P)) compared to Outerra, but still large enough to have some good fun in a tank.
Any particular moons you have in mind? Do they exist, or are you imitating the style of moons?

The game design is thought so the game is not too difficult to put in place. So yes those moons would look like our moon but I'm not sure how we could add calderas with the current generation system. I'd like also to add some sort of big big crystals to block some line of sight but already the size of the moons make the line of sight different from other FPS game because of he curvitude.
So everything is fictional and it would be a huge field of those moons.
