AirBalloon v.1.1 Updated on 01.07.13

Download:

Balloon.deathevor.otx (3.1 MB) v.1.1
https://mega.co.nz/#!0EEVQT4Z!UXinoWR5XB7wSzryEtdLtWGYZToi4INNo8mA_nEdgZU

Description:

Flyable airbaloon model. The physics use jsbsim buoyancy properties (that actually always was included in Outerra). So feel free to check the code, as there are many cool things you can do with buoyancy (like Airships).
Unfortunately due to lack of time I haven't implemented all features that was in my mind (Like wind and other things). However the baloon still pick the horizontal speed from swing.
Also all instruments should work correctly, especially the fuel system - so you will be aware on when you'll run out of fuel.

I suppose to finish it few weeks ago (including the full texturing with ambient map baked). However again, I probably should leave this to a bit less busier times.
Still, Special Thanks to Vitaly Mook for UV unwrap.
Therefore feeling that it's better to post it at this stage.

Additional: For better experience try to bump once to the ground and then take off. You'll experience the buoyancy effect more.

Installation:

1) Double-Click to install

Changelog:

v.1.1 - Flight Model adjusted. The Airbaloon now doesn't ascend by itself. Only lifts with power applied. (01.07.13)

P.S. The colour of ballon doesn't mean anything :) Know it matches some colours that YouTube stands for :)

Exactly the kind of script i need for space ships. But how do you fly it and can i make it faster when moving horizontal? Thanks a lot!

The horizontal speed on airbaloons gained by wind.
So basically pilot plans his rote based on wind heading on different altitudes.

That's a thing that I haven't implemented yet.

But this one anyway gains it just with time.
You can speed up the process by bumping into ground a little bit (it will give it a tilt) and then gain the altitude and it will keep accelerating horizontaly:)

For Airships and in your case space ship:

You can just set control to engine direction (controlled by short-keys) - by pressing them you'll force the aircraft to go whenever you want.

But my opinion is that for space ships is better to use helicopter script. As it has the hover option. It will act exactly as many spaceships would.
As balloon has a property that make it to swing. Which I doubt you want.

I want my airships.. Big as they can get.. Slow moving and carrying vehicles. Like that cargo airship I found two years ago. Could carry like 300,000 lbs of cargo. Perfect for settling on remote mountaintops.

Or a gigantic Zeppelin whyte huntreds of hot-air balloons stashed in an inner hangar ! Just like the german Goliath-tank design. :D

An impressive balloon there deathevor. Maybe some dirt on it, so the colors dont seem so bright. Is giving an else feeling of the height in that little basket.

Nice model!

Here, a single click install otx file:
Balloon.deathevor.otx

Also fixed mipmaps in textures and texture sizes not being multiplies of 4.

All this was planned (the rust on metal, bumps on the rubber edges, add dirty glass on gauges, etc.), the model is already in Mudbox for painting.
But got my self twice busier, so I doubt I'll have any time for next 6-8 month to even go on forum.

Thank you very much Cameni.

With Otx I had problem with exporting engine file and flight model file. Therefore went old way.
Will add it to the top.

Just quick question to everyone,

On your Outerra does the baloon can descend with throttle off?
Originally it should, but after updating outerra on mine it constantly goes up (just slower or faster).

Seems that initially it goes up, but if I put throttle up and then down, then it starts descending.

Just in case - model updated to version 1.1 (some flight dynamic changes).

Question to Cameni:

Does the model JS script can parse the txt file?

My idea was to create 3r party app the parses the Weathe page and write down the wind velocity and direction (for different altitude levels) to txt file.
Js script parses it and adds a force on airbaloon in this direction.

This would work as proper weather effect on a baloon, with all it's abilities for flight navigation.

Normally JS can't access local files because it would be a security issue, since JS runs within the context of a web page. What source of the weather data did you want to use?

I've always used MetOffice.gov.uk - Aviation Briefing section.
The Airmets there are in text and show winds on different levels.
