Low-res terrain everywhere? [New to Outerra]
« on: January 23, 2014, 03:25:12 pm »

Sorry if this has been asked already, but is the game supposed to have low res terrain nearly everywhere? I got the impression the engine was using some kind of fractal algorithm to fake high quality terrain basically, but no location but the default one has any quality at all. Is this intentional or am I missing something?

Thank you.

On the middle bottom part you can see a couple of download bars - that means it's downloading the base terrain data (in ~76m resolution). Only after these are downloaded (just once in given location), then the procedural refinement can kick in and refine it down.

You have to be a bit more patient than usual, because of the huge load Reddit is causing us currently ...

Aha, ok, that makes sense! I'll be sure to check it out later when the load isn't so intense.

You can also download the terrain data manually. I did that a few weeks ago, and it takes things from being impressive, to damn near amazing.

It is around 13 gigs in all, but if you have the bandwidth, I'd recommend it personally. Post 4 in this thread:
